“The Estrogen Window offers an easy-to-read explanation that removes the confusion regarding how to safely take estrogen. Once women realize they have an estrogen window, they can take back control of their lives.”—Sara Gottfried, MD, author of New York Times bestselling books The Hormone Reset Diet and The Hormone Cure“Dr. Seibel’s meticulous review of the most recent scientific evidence about menopausal hormones will help the reader think about the extra benefits that result from taking estrogen in the right way and at the right time. Clearly presented, this book shows that estrogen therapy improves quality of life including workability, prevents disease, and can be life-saving.”—Philip M. Sarrel, MD, professor emeritus of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences and professor emeritus of psychiatry, Yale University School of Medicine“I couldn’t put this book down! I have been longing for a doctor to write a book that will help women clearly understand the benefits of estrogen, when to use it, and how. Most women are still basing their health care on fear instead of facts. Dr. Seibel walks us through the impact of estrogen on our breasts, heart, brain, bones, vagina, bladder, and skin! Thank you, Dr. Seibel, for giving us all the information, studies, and tools to help keep us healthy and happy through menopause and beyond.”—Ellen Dolgen, speaker, author, blogger, and health and wellness advocate; founder and president of Menopause Mondays at EllenDolgen.com“In his new book, The Estrogen Window, Mache Seibel, MD, has created a breakthrough guide to coach women through menopause. He clarifies how to manage menopause symptoms, balance the risks and benefits of hormone therapy and when might be the best time to consider treatment, and how to communicate effectively with your doctor. Highly recommended for anyone dealing with menopause issues.”—Steven Masley, MD, FAHA, FACN, FAAFP, CNS, bestselling author of Smart Fat and The 30-Day Heart Tune-Up and creator of top public television programs: 30 Days to a Younger Heart and Smart Fats to Outsmart Aging.“In The Estrogen Window, Dr. Mache Seibel tells us everything we need to know about one of the most frequently prescribed medications in America. The crucial message is one women have known for millennia: Timing is everything.”—Julie Holland, MD, author of Moody Bitches: The Truth About the Drugs You’re Taking, the Sleep You’re Missing, the Sex You’re Not Having, and What’s Really Making You Crazy“The Estrogen Window is a book very much needed among women today, many of whom suffer not only from the effects of their menopause, but even more from the effects of misinformation. Dr. Seibel has written a clear, concise, readable, and knowledgeable source of information. One that will be immediately valuable to the many women and their families who suffer from estrogen deprivation.”—Ricardo Azziz, MD, MPH; Regents’ professor, Georgia Regents University; former founding president, Georgia Regents University; former president, Georgia Health Sciences University; former founding CEO, Georgia Regents Health System

This book is confusing. What is confusing is the "window" the doctor writes about for women to take hormones. Second, the doctor writes mostly about taking NON-bioidential hormones, i.e., hormones like Premarin (which is animal abuse as to how it is produced, look it up.)I tried bioidentical hormones about 5 years ago in my 50s and never felt so bad -- I blew up like a balloon. I think I still had enough hormones in me that adding more was very problematic. I am 63 now and last year one day I woke up and felt "old." I had also gained belly fat which is typical in finally hitting menopause. I found a good (woman) doctor who put me back on bios -- estrogen patch, prometrium, compounded testosterone. I finally feel good again. The "window" in his book is about women UNDER 60 taking hormones and he alludes to how dangerous hormones are (causing cancer) for women over 60 and that they should only stay on hormones for 5 years. His recommendations would definitely NOT have worked for me in my 50s as he states in his book. My doctor has a patient WHO IS 86 who takes bio-identical hormones with no problems.I would NOT recommend this book over books written by Dr. Elizabeth Lee Vliet or the book, The Perimenopause & Menopause Workbook. Vliet's books make the most sense to me. I DO NOT suggest taking this doctor's advice.UPDATE: I MESSAGED THIS DOCTOR ON FACEBOOK AS TO MY CONCERNS ABOUT HIS BOOK AND HE NEVER RESPONDED!

This book was so very helpful when making my decision whether to take hormone replacement therapy. It also gave me the tools I needed to talk to my health care provider about it as well as inform my friends the truth about HRT.

I love this book because of the new, pertinent information that I learned. Dr. Seibel presents updated research that my own doctor wasn't aware of. In fact, my doctor referred me out because she said, "I know nothing about menopause!" I, myself, missed the "estrogen window" so I had to come off of oral medication. Don't miss out! This book is for those women who want to know how to best care for themselves before, during and after menopause. Dr. Seibel is the Estrogen guru! : )

If you’re afraid or confused about estrogen and whether bioidentical hormones are safe to take, you’re not alone! There are constantly reports about hormone replacement therapy causing all kinds of issues with a woman’s health like increasing the chances of breast cancer and heart disease. When do you start them? How long can you take them?I first read this book when it was named The Estrogen Window. In this first of its kind books, Harvard faculty member and international menopause expert Dr. Mache Seibel explains in easy to understand language how there is an estrogen window of opportunity to take hormones. Begin treatment in your estrogen window and estrogen can lower your risk of breast cancer, heart disease, dementia and more. But once the estrogen window closes, the reverse can be true. The Estrogen Fix is recommended by the North American Menopause Society not only for every woman in and around menopause, but also for their doctors.

The book was well written and easy to understand. I purchased and read the book after listening to Dr. Siebel on satellite radio. I am very interested in figuring out what will be best for me in terms of hormone replacement and this book addresses many questions. I plan to follow up with my doctor as well as possibly visiting Dr. Siebel for an office visit. He is the first physician that I’ve come in contact with who has a true opinion about HRT based on facts.

Dr. Mache Seibel is a gift to women. His book and work in this world is incredible and so needed, as there is tremendous confusion around hormones, menopause, autoimmune disease and more. The Estrogen Fix is filled with information that makes sense and is backed by science and Dr. Mache Seibels decades of experience and work in this field.

Passionate, informed, and science-driven. As a nutritionist, I agree with Dr. Siebel that the decision to use hormones could be the most important mid-life medical decision a woman makes to save her later from breast cancer, heart disease, and dimentia. Please read BEFORE you go through menopause so you can make an educated decision for yourself. Thanks for your heartfelt, excellent work, Dr. S. - Christa Orecchio, Clinical and Holistic Nutritionist, thewholejourney.com

In this easy to read book, Dr. Seibel clears the mystery regarding estrogen and why and how it can be right for women. This confusing topic is made simpler and provides women with the right questions to ask their doctors. It is a must read for any woman grappling with this issue.

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Readers with an eye on European politics will recognize Ali as the Somali-born member of the Dutch parliament who faced death threats after collaborating on a film about domestic violence against Muslim women with controversial director Theo van Gogh (who was himself assassinated). Even before then, her attacks on Islamic culture as "brutal, bigoted, [and] fixated on controlling women" had generated much controversy. In this suspenseful account of her life and her internal struggle with her Muslim faith, she discusses how these views were shaped by her experiences amid the political chaos of Somalia and other African nations, where she was subjected to genital mutilation and later forced into an unwanted marriage. While in transit to her husband in Canada, she decided to seek asylum in the Netherlands, where she marveled at the polite policemen and government bureaucrats. Ali is up-front about having lied about her background in order to obtain her citizenship, which led to further controversy in early 2006, when an immigration official sought to deport her and triggered the collapse of the Dutch coalition government. Apart from feelings of guilt over van Gogh's death, her voice is forceful and unbowed—like Irshad Manji, she delivers a powerful feminist critique of Islam informed by a genuine understanding of the religion. 8-page photo insert. From Bookmarks Magazine

Although Ayaan Hirsi Ali remains Public Enemy #1 for radical Muslims, she refuses to be silenced. In this captivating memoir—an act of courage itself—she shares the evolution of her values, beliefs, and identity, all propelled by an urgent mission to educate Western countries about the bigotries of other nations. Set against a terrifying geopolitical landscape of African wars and Muslim fundamentalism, Hirsi Ali addresses timely topics: the plight of refugees and women; the Muslim clan system; forced marriage; political asylum; and, perhaps most significantly, her own personal religious crisis. Written in descriptive, clear prose, Infidel, with its radical feminist criticism of Islam, offers a disturbing view of the modern world—and inspired every critic who read it. Riveting is one word I would use to describe Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s book, Infidel. Her story is one of defiance and great courage. You will see Islam through her eyes and feel her fear, and anger. You will be impressed with the courage that it took this young twenty-two year old girl to reject a marriage she did not want and to escape to a culture that she had been taught to detest. You will see how gradually the light was turned on and she began to see the falseness of all she had been taught. You will cheer her fight to bring awareness to the plight of Muslim women and girls who are basically slaves to an ideology that denies their personhood. Fathers, brothers, and other male relatives have totally control over their lives. Ayaan risk her life to tell the truth about the abominable treatment of Muslim women, not only in the Arab countries but also how they are importing their beliefs to European countries. She has been under the threat of death from Muslim clerics, has had to go into hiding, and has stood and faced it all with dignity. No book will make you more thankful to have been born in America than the book Infidel. It is a must read.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali has experienced, unenviably, three of history’s major tyrannical political movements: Marxist state socialism, welfare-state socialism, and, most toxic, Islam.Depending on the estimate, somewhere between 60 million and 200 million political murders later, Marxism, and its offshoot, fascism, only require explanation for the terminally ignorant. Her experience of welfare-state socialism included a serious effort to revoke her dutch citizenship by a senior member of the dutch nomenclatura, and thereby her seat in the dutch parliament, at least in part because her criticisms of female slavery, genital mutilation, honor killings, and so on, occurring in the Netherlands, tolerated by the dutch in the name of multiculturalism, couldn’t easily be dismissed as ‘right-wing racism,’ or as ‘islamophobia,’ given that she’s black from Somalia and a former muslim under threat of death for criticisms of Islam. The death threat was pinned with a knife to the murdered corpse of the dutch film-maker, Theo van Gogh, who produced a short film criticizing islamic treatment of women for Ms. Ali.As for Islam, and this book, per Ms. Ali, “The message of this book, if it must have a message, is that we in the West would be wrong to prolong the pain of that transition unnecessarily, by elevating cultures full of bigotry and hatred toward women to the stature of respectable alternative ways of life.”I recommend the book club suggestions at the end of the Kindle Edition of the book also.

This is a must read for anyone willing to approach the subject of Muslim women's rights with an open mind. Ali delivers a critique of Islam from a former insider's point of view pointing out habits and customs that should be banned all over the world. She decries the liberal West's penchant for turning a blind eye to the abject misery, suffering and physical abuse of women.

Infidel was on my shelf for a long time and I finally got to it. It was an excellent, well written personal account of Ali's journey of such a conservation perspective of Islam and her journey of escaping consistent mental and physical abuse from her mother (if we can call her that) and the constant reminders of how Islam should be applied through their eyes. Ali provides historical backgrounds that allow you to understand the mentality of whom she was frequently around in Africa. Her journey to escape the customs and norms is admirable and inspiring to find the courage to criticize such a debated topic and religion. I would highly recommend this book to everyone as it will either open up your eyes to such tribal cultures or confirm some of your thoughts. Either way, this book certainly creates discussion and while you discuss this re-read her first chapter. It is her personal account. Whatever thoughts you may have about her demonizing the religion doesn't negate her personal experience. Highly recommended!

A difficult book to read and significantly more difficult to review. The difficult part of reading and reviewing was the struggle to suppress my own emotions. The writer’s attempt to reveal the mistreatment of Muslim women in particular is noble. Her life story is one of many emotions, trials and tribulations and the efforts on her part to seek equality on behalf of others reveals a great mind in a great person. It should be fair to say there are many more like her stymied by their religion and background and yet of equal mind if not courage. I say this because no single ethnic group or religious sect has a monopoly on brains regardless of gender. Many people are simply what they are taught to be. To avoid offending anyone I seldom discuss or give thoughts on religion. I am not knowledgeable enough to discuss the various aspects of the various religions but like many (I suspect) I entertain my own thoughts and opinions. While this book taught me some about the particular religion involved it made light of the brutality of life for women living under the justification by that particular religion. I despise anyone involved in the mistreatment of women. Certainly in my life I have known bar flies who maybe rated a dope slap but the constant abuse and mistreatment of any woman rates as a punishable sin. I cannot always say they are the “fairer sex” unless by fairness one means their attitude and treatment of others, male or female. I have known, worked with, and worked for some women who I am proud and privileged to have known, worked for and worked with. Ayaan Hirsi Ali is someone I would consider an honor to know.

I ended up DNFing this book at about 82%, so I feel like I know what it was that I did not like about this book and I feel confident in my rating. The synopsis of this book says that it is “reimagined through a searing feminist lens” and I do not agree with that at all. To me when a book says that it is a feminist retelling, I think that it is going to have female characters that stand up for themselves and fight for equality, but in the 254 pages that I read of this book, not once did our main character stand up for anything. Sure, the inequality that women in this society is mentioned and observed, but for me that was just not enough. Some things that I absolutely hated about this book:Wow your so pretty I can’t stand it, let me just constantly talk about and mention how beautiful the MC isMC knows another character wants to sexually assault another character, and lets it happen. That is NOT feminist to me.MC’s father says she is so pretty he should’ve taken her as his own. HER FATHER WANTS HER.MC was super judgemental (the first time she sees a fat woman, she says “I did not know such a body was even allowed to exist”She thinks it is completely out of the question/impossible that one of her sisters is not straightLots of girl hate, especially between the sisters.Did I mention how pretty she is?All men are sexual predators and misogynistic, felt like it was just trying to push the feminist agenda. Not all men are sexual predators or stupid.Sea Witch was far more interesting than the MC, actually stood up for herselfOne dimensional characters, very little character developmentMC is abused every night by her betrothed and then it is never fully addressedAnd seriously, the MC is sooooo pretty no one can believe that she is realI have no idea if the ending gets any better, but from what I read I really didn’t like how the book just pointed out issues instead of actually addressing them or anyone trying to make a difference. The world building is also really lacking, when we get to land it mentions a civil war on the islands, but we have no clue what country we are in and what the islands are. It wasn’t until I went and read the Goodreads synopsis that I realized it’s supposed to be set in Ireland, which definitely does NOT come through in any of the settings or characters. The writing in this was also a really big problem for me, it felt like the publisher didn’t realize that the author was only submitting a first draft and decided to publish it right away. There were paragraphs where there would be a scene with the Sea King, and then the very next paragraph would be something completely different with nothing to tell you what is going on and how you got from there to here.I get that this was trying to be a feminist commentary on the world, but it didn’t quite accomplish that. It never tried to offer solutions or even give any sort of analysis on why this world is the way it is. It almost read like the main message was that men are all evil, misogynistic, abusive monsters and women need to stay away from them.I could honestly go on and on about the things that I disliked about this book, but since I don’t want to write a book length review, I’m going to stop it here. This book was really disappointing for me and I honestly do not recommend this book.

Content Warning: Rape, Sexual Content, Language, Violence, and Female OppressionI really wanted to love this one. I was promised a feminist re-imagining of The Little Mermaid, and I honestly didn't feel like I got that. Literally the last chapter was the only place that that message came out strongly (and a teeny, tiny bit with Oliver's mother), and I kept reading, waiting for the story to get better and to show a more positive message, but it just never got there for me.As far as the retelling aspect of the story went, O'Neill stayed pretty true to both the feel of the tale and the major plot twists. Everything seemed to happen chronologically, as it did in the original faerie tale, and there was a lot of the original tale that was unchanged. But, she also added a really heavy hand to the feeling of the story, and the message that was portrayed throughout was very sad indeed. Gaia, her sisters, and all mermaids of the kingdom, were heavily oppressed by the Mer-men. Being only 15, Gaia was promised to be wed to a man almost as old as her father, who was already over 60 when he took her mother at age 16. There was a HEAVY theme of beauty being the only important aspect of the mermaids, and even when Gaia obtained her legs, the humans seemed to only focus on her beauty as well. Now, one would have thought that somewhere around the halfway point we would have gotten a message about how this oppression was wrong, and looks weren't everything, and that all men weren't shallow like they were in this story. We didn't. I continued to see themes like "boys will be boys," and "no girls allowed," with a focus on the importance of being beautiful.  This didn't feel feminist to me until the ending when Gaia finally decided that she gave up everything for a man (who was 6 years older than her by the way) who would never appreciate her. She finally decided to stand up to her father and take matters in to her own hand. She finally found that female empowerment to realize that the mermaids had been mistreated for far too long. But, this was only within the last 10 pages. Even with Gaia finding this female empowerment at the end, and having the story show how wrong and disgusting this female oppression was, the story didn't feel like it truly represented the feminist ideals of equality. There was not a single decent male portrayed in the story, and even the Rusalkas targeted all men instead of just picking and choosing the sinners. I did enjoy the last chapter. I was proud of Gaia for finding her power and her voice. I enjoyed the addition of the Rusalkas, and their folklore, to the story. I even admired the descriptiveness of the world building, but I just couldn't love a story that felt like it was written for the younger end of YA and yet still contained such a poor message, and still managed to throw in the f-bomb in awkward places, as well as an awkward scene of masturbation brought on by a drunken kiss. The only other positive thing I could point out for this tale would be that it taught a few lessons, just like most original faerie tales intended to do. It showed the importance of feminism. It showed the importance of believing in yourself and your inner and outer beauty. It showed how wrong oppression and prejudice are, and it taught the importance of getting to know someone before letting yourself "fall in love."Â

I love fairy tales. I love fairy tale retellings. This cover is absolutely gorgeous and I haven't read many Little Mermaid retellings so I knew I had to pick this one up. But I wasn't thrilled. It'sa re-imagining of Hans Christian Anderson's tale but it includes subtle details that allude to Disney's version, which I feel wasn't needed. There were some parts that worked for me but a lot that didn't. I felt the style of writing was in conflict with some of the language used. It didn't work together. I enjoyed the main character's character development. I enjoyed the angle the writer choose but I didn't love the writing. The ending was worth it but getting there took too much of my time.

I purchased this book for a class that I was taking while in college, after purchasing the book, instructor stated that we were not going to use it

Violence in the workplace has now reached epidemic proportions. It is an issue everywhere as evident by our turning on the television news and not letting a week go by without seeing a major story about violence taking place in offices, and other common locations. The question all of us wonder is whether or not anything can be done about this ongoing, looming, and ever pervasive issue that can cause tragedy on any given day in our lives. The answer is a clear yes and this book is the only written survey of its type and certainly is up to the minute in the explanations and strategies it provides for dealing with this problem. Author Kim Kerr is the Chief Information Officer of Verisys Corporation. His expertise includes how to manage hiring risk from a human resource and security perspective. He was previously involved in security management for the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996, and subsequent Olympics in Sydney in 2000, and Salt Lake City in 2002. His principal contributors are all experts in their respective fields as well, and the book has both a flow and feel to it that it is written in one voice.Kerr takes us through crime after crime in his preface and tells us about his own experience in Edmond, Oklahoma in 1986 when what proved to be a troubled postal worker went into a post office where there were people he knew and shot 21 fellow workers including supervisors. Fourteen died and 7 were wounded. Many times prior to this tragedy there were mass killings but always among strangers. Here there were relationships. This is also where the term going "postal" came into being, although the term does not have a basis in fact. During the 16 year period from 1992 until 1998, of some 6700 homicides taking place in our country, 16 were in a post office, and yet the term persists. The vast majority of these workplace murders do not make television news even in a period where the news cycle is 24 hours. This is all the more reason why we have to do what we can to preempt such situations occurring in the work spaces that each of us occupies. What you need to know is that as of now, more than 70 percent of businesses in this country do not have a violence prevention policy, or program for that matter. You need a strategy and you need to convey to your current employees and every new employee that is hired a policy for preventing violence in the work place, and dealing with it if it doesn't happen. Nobody gets a pass on this topic, and frankly the most important thing is simply to report the occurrence of violence to someone, anyone, do not remain silent about it. There are 15 chapters in the book spread evenly through about 235 pages of narrative. I found the most interesting and useful chapters to be:Chapter 8 - Early Warning Signs: Can the Problem be Stopped Before It Starts?Chapter 9 - proactively Dealing with Anger in the WorkplaceChapter 11 - Background Screening: Important but Not the Silver BulletChapter 13 - TrainingChapter 14 - Investigating Incidents: Responding to an Active ShooterThe final chapter which is chapter 15 deals with "Cyber Threats: An Emerging Concern". I find this particularly interesting because of the possibility of cyber stalkers entering the workspace in a non physical manner. They don't show up. They come in electronically, and most employees do not even think about reporting them when they happen initially. Employees have no idea about how to deal with evidence of it happening, or how to collect it, and frankly law enforcement authorities are no better. The anonymity afforded to cyber stalkers only serves to embolden them. After reading the book, I came to the conclusion that the appendices in the back are just as important and maybe more important than the book's 15 chapters. I would advise you that upon receipt of "Workplace Violence" to immediately go through the checklists in the appendices, all of them. Between reading steps to effectuate emergency procedures, and putting into play a disaster recovery plan, you can begin to educate your employees on the first day you have this book.CONCLUSION:Keep in mind that before the World Trade Center buildings were attacked on 9/11, they were previously attacked in 1993 when a truck loaded with explosive material went off in the basement parking garage. After that tragedy a tremendous action plan was implemented to dramatically help foster an emergency evacuation from the buildings if there were a future attack. The procedures implemented included lighting similar to what you find in a movie theater when you try to get to your seat in the dark, and regularly scheduled fire evaluation drills which the floor wardens on each floor took very seriously. There were drills constantly, almost to the point of annoyance. There is no question that the orderly evacuation of the building in 2001 saved thousands of lives that might have been lost if these procedures were not implemented and rehearsed. You will remember that these wardens had only about an hour to get tens of thousands of people down some 70 flights of steps before the collapses occurred. This tragedy demonstrated conclusively what the adoption of procedures thoroughly explored and detailed in "Workplace Violence" can achieve if companies take the time and commitment to put them into place. My suggestion is if you feel you have any issue whatsoever with safety, and the potential or emergencies violent and otherwise in your workplace, you need to read this book, and act on it. This book would have been five stars, and for content it is. I gave it four stars because of the quality of the paper it was printed on and the overall feel of the book. For the contents it is first class, it really gets the job done. Thank you for reading this review.Richard C. Stoyeck

Violence in the workplace can take a variety of forms, from stalking to bullying, cyber threats and even physical mayhem, including active shooters. Kim Kerr's 2010 textbook on the subject, "Workplace Violence: Planning for Prevention and Response", is a good introduction to the problem and to some mitigating measures. The target audience, corporate security planners and human resource managers, faces increased threats in a difficult economy where unhappy workers and disgruntled former workers can turn out to be everyone's worst nightmare.Kerr and three collaborators define the problem of workplace violence, describe its many aspects, and identify its impact on victims, bystanders and the business bottom line. The chapters talks to proactive measures, such as screening the workforce and training people on the proper response to a workplace incident. Some chapters explore less obvious but necessary subsets of the workplace violence issue, such as university campus security. The book concludes with some thoughtful checklists as a starting point for individual programs."Workplace Violence" is written in clear, easy to understand language. The text is repetitive in places, but its points are generally well-taken. It is recommended as a planning resource for security and human resource managers.

This book is a pretty good resource if you work in corporate security or HR. Unfortunately this book is needed at all is a shame. Granted more people die on the way to work in car accidents than they do because of workplace violence, understanding the symptoms and triggers to what can happen can help diffuse tense workplace situations. This book seems more like a university textbook - it's easy to read but is more of theory than practice. I was hoping for something more actionable - something I could take and implement within my own division in my company and bring to HR.The only real valuable part of the book is the appendices. They contain a good number of sample plans and checklists that you could use to build your own custom needs or tweak the ones you have. The book does have some value, but if you're looking for a single resource to help deal with workplace violence, then this may not be it, but it's a good place to start.

Review

“The exhibition celebrates [women scientists’] accomplishments, and makes it plain that they are all the more extraordinary given the deeply entrenched biases they had to overcome. There were parents who thought it improper or wasteful to educate girls; universities and professional societies that would not admit women; employers who either would not hire them or would not pay a fair wage. But there were also mentors and champions who opened doors and gave credit where it was due.” —New York Times review of the Grolier Club exhibition that forms the basis of this book"The sixteen heroines of these pages dared their way to discovery. In her recounting of their achievements, Pendred Noyce assures the new generation of STEM-empowered girls that women have a history in science as well as a future." —Dava Sobel, author, Longitude, Galileo's Daughter, A More Perfect Heaven“A wonderful collection of stories . . . The author provided explanation and context of both a scientific and a geopolitical nature. I hope the author will keep the stories coming.” —Shirley Malcolm, head of Education and Human Resources, American Association for the Advancement of Science

Pendred Noyce has created a very inviting look into the historical world of women in science. Each woman contributed to her field against the greatest of odds. The paths that had to be single handedly forged by these pioneers was no small feat. As interesting a narrative as it is for the development of science I found it even more compelling as a voice for women's role in society. It paints a very clear picture of the systemic bias that is still evidenced in institutional sexism today. The is a must read foundation book for young men and women to begin to understand our society today. Great job, Pendred Noyce.

I appreciated the emphasis on studious preparation for work, how to obtain a mentor, traits to seek in a spouse who would be supportive.

Great book!

Got this for my scientist niece. Should be inspiring

"Why has woman passion, intellect, moral activity--these three--and a place in society where no one of the three can be exercised?" Florence Nightingale in "Cassandra"Florence Nightingale conjurers up an image of a compassionate woman tenderly caring for war wounded men. She is remembered as a nurse--a role consistent with social expectations of women as mothers and nurturers. We may know that she revolutionized hospital care and inspired the founding of the Red Cross, but how many of us know that she loved mathematics and employed statistics in her research and created pie charts for her reports? Or that 'Crimean fever' left her in extreme pain and often bedridden while she continued her crusade? Nightingale was the founder of modern nursing based on evidence and experience--and mathematics.Nightingale was selfless and devout, like the Victorian model of womanhood. But her brilliant mind and willingness to go into the filth and gore of the battlefield and hospital instead of expected marriage and motherhood set her apart as a 'remarkable woman'.Pendred Noyce's book Magnificent Minds:16 Remarkable Women in Science & Medicine considers women from across history whose curiosity drove them to achieve important advances in physics, astronomy, chemistry and medicine. The book is beautifully presented with an historical time-line for each woman, a concise biography including both her private life and career, illustrations, and side bar explanations. The achievements of each woman is understandably presented in context of their time and from a historical perspective. The women include:Louise Bourgeois Boursier, 1563-1626, France, Midwife Maria Cunitz, 1610-1664, Poland and Germany, Astronomer Marie Meurdrac, 1610-1680, France, Chemist Laura Bassi, 1711-1778, Italy, Physicist Augusta Ada Bryon, Countess Lovelace, 1815-1852, England, Computing Science Florence Nightingale, 1820-1910, England, Mathematics Mary Putman Jacobi, 1842-1906, United States, Medial Science Sophie Kovalevskaya,1850-1891, Russia, Mathematics Marie Sklodowska Curie, 1867-1934, Poland and France, Physics Lise Meitner, 1878-1968, Austria, Physics Emmy Noeher, 1882-1935, Germany, Mathematics Barbara McClintock, 1902-1992, United States, Medical Sciences Grace Murray Hopper, 1906-1992, United States, Computer Science Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin,1910-1994, England, Chemistry Chien-Shiung Wu, 1912-1997, China and the United States, Physics Gertrude B. Elion,1918-1999, United States, Chemistry Each loved a challenge and desperately wanted to work and contribute to improve society and expand our understanding of the world.I was kept interested throughout the book and it left me wanting to know more. Happily, the author includes a reading list so one can learn more about each woman. This is a wonderful book for classroom use or to share with young women to encourage their dreams.I received a free ebook through NetGalley in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.

It takes a little while for this book to get going -- the first 3 or 4 biographical sketches are about women so early in scientific history that there's not a whole lot of info about their lives and their science is incomplete (historical), so it's not included in great detail. But it warms up after that. The last few are very good, with excellent stories and better science. This is a visual book, laid out like a magazine. There are breakout boxes to explain historical contexts or scientific ideas. There are quote boxes. Lots of pictures. The language is very simple. I'm terrible at guessing these things, but I would say it's about a 7th or 8th grade level book. In any case it should be a straightforward, interesting read for young people (either male or female) interested in science. That being said, it is more of a history book than a science book. Just the intro to the science is included. But knowing about their lives is important. Very enjoyable, easy read.I got a free copy of an early ebook version of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this book (that I received for free as an advanced reader copy via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review). Author Pendred E. Noyce did a great job of showing the struggles 16 women went through in order to do their science. Noyce also successfully showed the women's places in chronology through the use of timelines. She also expanded on some of the science, but this is definitely not a book about science; it is about the women, who despite the obstacles, made great contributions to science. A companion volume, Remarkable Minds: 16 More Pioneering Women in Science and Medicine, is due to come out in August 2015. I look forward to seeing whom Noyce will profile in this volume.I recommend this book for anyone interested in the history of science and for anyone who wants to encourage girls or women to enter STEM fields. I also strongly recommend Rosalind Franklin: The Dark Lady of DNA (who is not included in this book) by Brenda Maddox and Dorothy Hodgkin: A Life by Georgina Ferry (who is included in the book).

I was offered this book for free in exchange for a review. In general, the book is very inspirational, particularly to women. I had learned about some of the women that are mentioned in the book back when I was in grade school. However, the book covers way more detail and interesting facts about even those women, so every chapter definitely had something new to offer. Besides, I feel that through the stories of these sixteen women in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, computer science and medicine, this book gets you inspired to dream big and make a difference in this world. I would definitely recommend this book to any girl or young woman who aspire to make a difference. I cannot wait for my ten year old daughter to read this book when she gets a little older.

Identity Theft, edited by Melissa Kruger, is an easy read. Winsome. Witty. And real. You won’t find evangelical jargon in its pages. Though we can’t fully understand the answer to who we are in Christ this side of heaven, this book contains solid answers I’ve never encountered or considered. I devoured it in one day. Highlighter and pencil in hand for notes in the margins. And there are many. I was not familiar with most of the contributors but I found myself looking them up online because what they wrote was so clear and helpful. The Gospel Coalition has provided us with a resource that would be ideal for group study. Ten chapters. 137 pages. Memory verses and study notes at the end of each chapter. I will definitely read it again. —Deb Finnamore (David's wife; joint account)

Is not about finding yourself we are full of self is about finding Him and applied his work on the cross on our lives.

I’m currently still reading this gem of a book. I connect well with the message and it has been helpful to process the author’s personal stories along with Scripture. I love the reflection questions as well.

I was asked to speak on the top of our identity in Christ, so I bought this book and underlined and starred stuff in every chapter. It was hard to narrow down what passages/quotes to use in my 20-minute talk! Now I'm going through it with my ladies Bible study, and we learn something new about the Gospel and about each other every week. Every one of us is encouraged by the way the Gospel is so clearly laid out in such a way to teach us about who we are in Christ. Each chapter is better than the last! The last two are my favorite.

Great resource love the study ❤️

Bought it because Hannah Anderson wrote a chapter.

I love the different authors in this book. The chapter topics were so well laid out, and it is full of Biblical wisdom. The discussion questions at the end of each chapter are great as well. Excited to study this with a group of friends!

Reviewed by Julia Nutter:I highly recommend this book! I have very little time to read books right now, but I had been looking forward to picking up this book and am so glad I made time to read it. I love the format of it. Each of the ten chapters is written by a different author with their own unique stories and perspective, but the chapters remain uniform with the sections of Identity Theft, Identity Truth, and Identity Transformed in each. I really enjoyed the variety of women contributing to this book and it felt like having ten great spiritually rich conversations. The chapters were a nice length that made it easy to pick up and read a chapter in between the busyness of daily life. There is a memory verse and discussion questions at the end of each chapter. I think this would be great to read with a group of women or to read and journal the answers on your own. Each chapter focuses on an area of a woman's identity and just like you shouldn't just read a book on decluttering your home straight through before acting on it, I think this is a book that calls you to read a chapter and then dwell on that area and what God wants for you in that part of your identity before moving on to the next chapter. So, though it can be read quickly, I would recommend taking time to savor the truths that are shared, dig into the additional scripture within the discussion questions, and commit the verse from each chapter to memory.I see this as a great book to give to new and old believers to encourage, challenge, and clarify their identity in Christ and how to fully live that out in today's world. It was all of those things for me!
