Great book with a lot of great information for wherever you are in your business. I learned a lot about mistakes that I have been making as an employee. I highly recommend it for everyone in the working world whether you own your own business or are just starting at your first job.

I read this book in early 2012 but just re-read it and realized that it had helped me grow in the areas of dealing with my drama and the drama of others. However, I see new areas for improvement now and am glad for the opportunity to re-read the text. However, it should be noted that rank and file employees have little ability to stop the drama that comes from management and HR. Faulty hiring practices, a lack of screening of applicants, and less-than-adequate interviewing techniques for determining both qualifications, past problems, and verifying corporate culture "fit" add to problems which may already be in existence in a workplace. Often, drama comes from the top with management which leaks information to employees for whatver reasons they may have (i.e., garner support from subordinates, demonstrate their knowledge and power, or just loose lips) and employees who then leak information to others to demonstrate their position of power and gain influence as well.Lastly, this book should be taken together with consideration and diligent application of the Biblical values espoused in Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Psalms, and the New Testament. As time goes on, there will be more and more evil in the world and hence, the workplace, but Ms. Chism's writing is clear and applicable to today's workplace.... and although this book is not meant to bring in Christian values, it does that in a round-about way.In summary... less talk, less ego, more pride in who we are and what we do and more work will give us less drama in the workplace.

As a solopreneur I don't work in a big office or have a huge team of employees. But I am an active community volunteer for the chamber of commerce and other groups and, when time is short and project tasks are many, there can be some drama.Fortunately, Marlene Chism's book has come along just in time to help us work through the stress, focus on the common purpose and release the drama so that our goals are achieved with fewer complaints or regrets. Thank you Marlene! With insightful stories and inspiring case studies, Chism's methodology plays out positively time and time again as her tips assist all of us in creating a more purposeful workplace- whether in a cubicle or a community meeting room.I'm glad I discovered this book and will share it with others in my network so that they too can work and live drama-free.

When I got an advanced copy of Marlene's book, my intent was to do a quick scan and write a short, courtesy review. But I found it impossible to scan. I found myself reading it! When I finished, I reread it and made notes in the margins. Using shorthand, I indicated the initials of employees of whom I had applied Marlene's principles with effectively as well as those that I failed to use Marlene's principles...and ended up feeding drama.I've recommended Stop Workplace Drama to many others. Why? Have you ever hurt your leg or foot or toe, and instead of going to the doctor, you got used to limping? Maybe you told yourself that you were too busy to see a doctor. Perhaps you thought the problem would clear up on its own. But over time, you got used to walking funny. Pretty soon, you couldn't even remember what it felt like to feel normal or not walk around with discomfort. That's what drama is like. When viewed from a distance, it might appear to be charming, quaint, or even funny. But when that drama gets closer or begins to touch you personally, it becomes painful and draining, hurting not only at the immediate source of drama, but able to harm and damage other formerly-healthy parts of the whole system.Marlene's book is a powerful how-to. If you've forgotten what it's like to feel "normal" because all around you is drama, stop hoping it will fix itself. Get Marlene's book, read it, apply it. Find out why it's destined to appear on the desks of every leader who is serious about creating outstanding results with people.

Workplace drama is a situation that all leaders face in some form. Chism's approach is practical and can be implemented on various organizational levels. It is an holistic schema including spiritually which is a minefield that most authors and consultants avoid. She mentions the importance of personal values which is essential in addressing spirituality, since this is the source of a person's deeply held value system. Her fresh approach is stimulating, thoughtful, introspective, and practical.

It emphasizes that only YOU can stop letting others control your actions, which is right on the money for advice.

Stop Workplace Drama describes the drama cycle and how to reduce drama in the workplace. I work in an environment with a lot of drama and appreciate the tips for reducing drama and helping staff work together more effectively.

#27,060 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

In trying to write a proper review for this book, it's first worth noting that this stands as a masterpiece of knowledge that has quite literally changed my life. It's not often that I'll read a book twice, but for this one I'm certain I'll be re-reading it for years to come. To be fair, I've not read many other books in this area, but I'm sure that I've somehow stumbled onto one of the best in its class.I should start out by saying that I'm not a Buddhist, and quite frankly have developed a degree of skepticism and disappointment for all religions of the world. In saying that I'm not an atheist by any means, but really a seeker of the ultimate universal truth. Culadasa (and team) are able to guide the reader through a very thoughtful process of how to understand your own consciousness, where one's actual understanding of truth are compiled. Indeed, I've taken college level classes on neuroscience, and heard more than once that we know where all the components of your mind are located (emotions, memory, anger, happiness, etc.), but consciousness has no actual locus. This book takes you on a journey in the attempt to understand what that means, and ultimately provides one of the best articulations I have ever read on describing the conscious mind. How can doing something so simple, like paying attention to one thing (i.e. breathing) for an extended period of time be so profound? How can this process cause so much turmoil as your entire belief system is turned upside down? And finally, how does this result in answering some of the deepest questions that have swirled around in your mind from as long as you can remember? As I began a practice of meditation using techniques outlined in the book, there were questions and thoughts that were followed by more questions and thoughts. I was (and still am) amazed at how thoroughly everything is addressed in complete detail. In fact, I went through something quite traumatic that's referred to as "The Dark Night of the Soul". It's ultimately caused when you come to the realization your whole concept of self is something fabricated in the mind. I went through a crisis of sorts, as the ego tried to hang onto its tenuous moorings in consensus reality. In letting go of the ego so to speak, and beginning the process of unifying the many components of the mind into one cohesive process has brought about an inner peace with clarity and focus like I've never had before. I'm convinced that this is just the beginning of something more profound as the journey unfolds.I originally had just the Kindle version, but now went out and bought a hard copy for my coffee table in the meditation area. It's a book that gets opened just about every day. As mentioned, I'm now almost finished with the second cover-to-cover reading. I've actually created a document to outline the key points of the book. There are a number of lists, levels, and other important points that really need to be committed to memory. The book is organized using side notes, diagrams, and key points in offsets. It's suffice to say that the important points, are indeed *important* to remember. If your looking for a treatise on mindfulness, or life changing guidebook to help you with the quest for truth, then I wholeheartedly recommend the knowledge in this book as the means to get you there.

I hesitate to post a review, there are so many already here, but there are a few thoughts I would like to share in hopes they will be useful to potential readers of this book. I hope these observations will be of use to some of you.I happen to be a licensed clinical psychologist who has also practiced meditation for the past couple of decades. I decided to put together a seminar on meditation for people in my area, but I wanted to take a neuropsychological perspective in organizing the materials. Like many people, I am hoping that the perspective emerging from empirical investigation into the brain will offer a trans-theoretical and trans-disciplinaryapproach to healing. This book appeared to be in line with my intentions, so I bought it expecting to have an enjoyable entrance into someone else's perspective that would also alert me to studies I might not have already found. While I certainly got a taste of Dr. Yates' perspective, and it is a perspective I very much appreciate, I found very little in the way of neuroscience. In fact, there were only a handful of studies referenced, and themajority of those were out of date. Oddly, this fact does not detract from my overall positive impression of the work, but I do feel compelled to make a point of it given the way the book was marketed. Both the subtitle and the "reviews" included by the publishers emphasized a scientific angle, and this is simply incorrect. I want to warn potential readers of this because, in what I can only assume was a hasty zeal on the part of the publishers to capitalize on the neuroscience zeitgeist, they have succeeded in potentially undermining the true value of the book.In my honest opinion, this book is best described as a modern synthesis and partial reinterpretation of the Abhidamma Sutta. As a modern synthesis it certainly owes much of its language and perspective to cognitive science, but not in an academically rigorous sense (the Mind and Life Dialogues between the Dalai Lama and various leading scientists might be a better place to start). It is more an attempt to bring a Theravadan perspective on the wisdom of two thousand plus years of phenomenological investigation by advanced meditators to the English speaking public, and in this it is an astounding success. Culadasa shows himself to be a first rate teacher of meditation who has obviously guided a great number of people through the years. His compassion and experience come through from the initial chapter on just establishing a regular time to practice, to the advanced stages where the reader will find a very fine grained description of common experiences and how to best focus one's energies. As a meditation guide, it is certainly the most thorough and clear book I have ever encountered, and I would venture to say buying this book is a no-brainer for anyone seriously interested in taking up a practice. Certainly for those already inclined towards a buddhist perspective this book comes as close to being complete as any non-living guide could be expected to.For those not commited to a buddhist world view, and even for those that are but are also willing to encounter some contradictory ideas, I would suggest that interested readers consider, "The Path of Liberation," by Adyashanti, the old gem, "Focusing," by Eugene Gendlin, and Judith Blackstone's several books. The first book will offer an interesting counterpoint to The Mind Illuminated that will help counteract the subtle but pervasive goal-orientedness that often leaks in to the types of practices Culadasa emphasizes. The second book offers an exceptionally useful method for working with feelings and emotions that come up in the middle and later stages of meditation. The third author provides a unique perspective that includes the body, feelings, and relationships in meditation. To Culadasa's credit, he clearly names many problems and offers his own suggestions, such as loving-kindness meditation as an adjunctive practice, but I have found over the years that many people are not best served by attempting to counteract negative emotions with positive ones. Rather than finding equanimity, they seem to more often feel guilty about their genuine experience and bypass the possibility of important psychological insight. They languish in the middle stages of their practice, and most eventually give up, discouraged and feeling like failures. I have found the authors above to be better medicine for people finding themselves awash in emotion and/or struggling with relationships. Of course, the best way to handle these kinds of technical questions that arise in the course of a consistent practice is on a case by case basis. No book or combination of books can replace a trusting relationship with a teacher and a community of supportive others, and again to Culadasa's credit, he is clear that there will be instances where people should consider therapeutic support, but I would suggest that later editions delve into the important issue of emotions and relationships more deeply. The basic stance that negative emotions are simple impedimets that should fade over time or be counteracted seems remarkably simplistic in the 21st century. Also, we are inherently relational creatures in many ways, so the experience of feeling angelic on the cushions only to immediately re-engage in old patterns with family and friends is legion. As Ram Dass quppied many years ago, "if you think you are enlightened, go spend a week with your family." I do not doubt that Culadasa has much useful advice on these questions, but there did not seem to be room in this volume. Finally, there is the question of post-awakening experience and practice. In this area Culadasa is completely silent. Again, not a crticism as his intent is clearly to support the establishment of a solid practice, but his input would be fascinating. Theravadan Buddhism in particular has a clearly articulated map of awakening, so discussion among advanced practitioners and teachers would be tremendously useful in continuing the project of forging a modern and clear language regarding how and why to practice meditation. I hope we will hear more from him in the future on these questions.I hope these reflections will be of some value to people looking for guidance on meditation, especially those without teachers who are encountering obstacles. I pray you find your way.

The Colosseum (Wonders of the World), by Keith Hopkins Mary Beard

Review

This lively book carries the reader painlessly through a complex record of legend and history. By the end the authors have touched authoritatively on architecture, mythological spectacle, imperial patronage, gladiators, sadism, early Christianity, and modern romantic impressions of the Colosseum. A delightful and instructive account. (G. W. Bowersock, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton)A wonderful book, worthy of its subject: horrifying, impressive, blood-soaked, occasionally very funny and always entertaining. (Robert Harris)Stripped of so much of its outer shell, the Colosseum reveals the extraordinary ingenuity of its functional design, comprising horizontal floors radiating from a hollow center and channelling the movements of crowds around and into its mass through vaulted passageways, or rising along steep staircases. Long admired by architects, an object of wonder during the Middle Ages and for the modern tourist, the very presence of the Colosseum in the center of Rome marks the power of the material past to grasp our imagination even in its present semi-ruinous state. How this has been accomplished is the well-told story of this book. (Richard Brilliant, Columbia University)Stirring stuff! This is a welcome and well-written book--scholarly but accessible and level-headed. It reassesses the myths, politely debunks many misconceptions about what we know--and what we don't know--to put the fabulous monument in context from its founding to the present. The practical notes for modern visitors made me yearn to be there in Rome again. (Lindsey Davis, author of the Falco series of ancient Roman mysteries)Racy and occasionally confrontational...This book revels in the accretions of detail and myth. The improbable animal fights; the unfeasibility of flooding the arena to stage mock sea-battles; the claims of Christianity to the place, with a crucifix and 200 days' indulgence accruing in memory of the early Christians who (probably) didn't get torn to pieces by the lions who (probably) weren't there in the first place; the thunder of footsteps on the wooden floor, deafening those in the undercroft with its winches and ramps and the stink and racket of animals and fighting men; the heat in the arena despite the probable shade offered by great cantilevered canvas awnings: first-class scholarship and an engagingly demotic style bring all this into sharp focus. (Michael Bywater The Independent 2005-03-25)It is a work of scholarship written with the general reader in mind. The scholarship is worn lightly, and the book is a pleasure to read. It sums up all that is known, and makes it clear that much must remain conjectural. Anyone visiting Rome and making the obligatory sightseeing tour of the Colosseum will do well to read it in advance and keep it to hand; enjoyment will be much enhanced. (Allan Massie The Spectator 2005-03-19)The book covers a wide variety of topics, including--to give but a few examples--the life of a gladiator, which was distinctly unglamorous, the exclusion of women from vast areas of the auditorium, the means by which wild animals were brought to Rome, the duration of the 'shows' (123 days for a Trajan bloodbath, according to one observer), the splendid flora (420 species in 1855, although now diminished by weedkiller), and practical tips for any visitor. The book is a great read. (John McBratney Irish Times 2005-03-12)Keith Hopkins and Mary Beard, eminent classical historians, have written a superb new cultural history of the Colosseum. As well as documenting the variety of flowers that once grew wild among the ruins, they offer pithy and occasionally hilarious accounts of the three million tourists who descend on the monument each year. (Ian Thomson Evening Standard 2005-03-07)[Hopkins and Beard] succeed remarkably in dispelling many of the myths surrounding the Colosseum...Lively writing brings the Colosseum and its denizens to life in great detail. (Rita Simmons Library Journal 2005-08-01)Brisk and illuminating, with much surprising information. (Kirkus Reviews 2005-09-01)

In a very easy to understand English that doesn't require an intellectual education, Keith Hopkins and Mary Beard write a history of the Colosseum in Rome ( buildings of this kind were found all over the Roman Empire ). The colosseum was built around 50 AD. Hopkins and Beard discuss the use of the colosseum from it's origin until today. They explain ( among other things ) the way that different social classes were seated. The senators were seated in the front row, alongside the Emperor, behind them were the other aristocrats, Roman citizens and finally slaves and foreigners on the wooden seats instead of marble seats. An interesting question is what kind of games were performed. There were not only Gladiator fights but also animal hunting ( as exotic as elephants, giraffes, and tigers among other ferocious beasts ). An other problem Hopkins/Beard discuss, is how many Gladiators died in a season and if it's true that Christians were meat for tigers, lions, jaguars, bears, and such, all of this because they remained loyal to their religion. It's not easy to understand why the Romans did this. In Imperial Rome there were a lot of religions (Jewish, Egyptian - Isis cult - and several cults of the East.). All their followers lived in peace while staying loyal to their religion. So why the Christians?Veterans and talented Gladiators were worth a lot of money ( moreover their training was expensive and time consuming ). This leads to the idea that on more than one occasion Gladiators fought with wooden weapons and performed a sort of choreography, a bit like stuntmen in modern movies. It was very close to real fighting and made the public sit on the edge of their seat. Hopkins and Beard found no evidence that Christians were thrown in the arena to be devoured by wild animals. It's significant that Christians themselves didn't mention the Colosseum as a place of martyrdom like many other places were.In later centuries the colosseum was used as a stone quarry, a place for building houses, excavating antiquities and so on. In the last chapter Keith Hopkins and Mary Beard give all kinds of advice to tourists who want to visit the Colosseum. At the end of the day you'll know that the Colosseum is more than a place where Gladiators fought.

Tiny book (4 X 7 inches) that contains very few pictures all of which are black and white. I was looking for a deeper dive on the Colosseum that examined the construction, explained some of its features and outlined the history. The handful of illustrations they did had were were woefully inadequate. This book missed the mark. It did cover the history but the authors went out of their way to debunk widely-held beliefs but had no supporting information to back up their theories. Further, they would repeatedly go several tangents in an unsuccessful effort to make their point. The authors obviously like to write but unfortunately held me hostage for most of the book and enlightened me very little.

This short book gives a quite comprehensive and up-to-date history of this great old Roman monument. One of the authors, Mary Beard, is also the author of Pompeii: The Life of a Roman Town, which I read recently (May 2013). Unfortunately, there are no color illustrations, and although there are thirty black and white illustrations and three figures, the reader of a book like this is left hungering for more visuals. Also, some of the black and white illustrations (nos. 8, 20, 24) are so dark and apparently reduced in this publication that one must strain to make out details alluded to in the text. Still, the book is a helpful and informative guide to one of the world’s greatest works of architecture.

I've been to Rome many times and study Roman history. This wasn't as revelatory as I'd hoped, but there was a consistent thread of new information given based on recent research that made the book well worth reading. I'm glad I bought it.

Great details. Lots of research went into this writing. Good comparison between ancient and modern use and acceptance of violent games. Hopkins points out many of the Colosseum myths. However, he seems to imply that if no documentation is found, then the event did not happen. At times, though, he gives wiggle room by using the term "plausible".

I liked it very much.

I wanted to get a better feel for the Colosseum before visiting Italy. This book is well written and provides a lot of good historical context.

Sometimes gets too bogged down in the research details

Fodor's steps up its appeal to modern travelers with this 2016 travel guide to England and Wales. The opening chapter is a terrific introduction to England as a destination, with just the right amount of information for the first time traveler to begin to sort out the options. The following chapters cover England and Wales on a geographic basis, beginning with a long chapter on the sights and sounds of London, one of the world's great cities. Each chapter provides options on where to go, including Fodor's in-house listing of favorite attractions. The chapters also provide options on where to eat and where to stay. The text is much enhanced with a nice selection of maps, diagrams, and color photographs. The concluding chapter has some smart travel info, including an introduction to Britain's excellent rail network, and tips on how to use the internet and your I-phone while in England. The back end of the guide has a guide to London's Underground (subway) and a pull-out map of London itself for ease in exploring. At just under 900 pages, this guide is a little hefty, but it makes up for it with lots of good information, including features on castles and palaces, of which England and Wales have quite a few. This reviewer was impressed with the coverage of Britain's national parks in England and Wales, with their surprising opportunities for outdoor recreation. The entries on the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales in the north of England were especially interesting for their hikes through beautiful scenery and open ground that might feature an ancient ruined abbey or old village. This guide is well-written and nicely organized, with neutral and informative commentary. Highly recommended.

It is very complete, but despite its length (or maybe because of it) it can be hard to find what you are looking for. A geographic organization makes a lot of sense when you either know where you want to be or are already there. When you are planning a trip, however, you may be looking for themes to help guide your trip planning. A thematic index would help in that regard, as would some sample itineraries structured around various themes (e.g., theater, living culture, gardens). One person's must see is another person's yawn. This travel guide MUST be supplemented by extensive internet research unless you already know what you want.

It is just OK. I was hoping it would have the depth of the full Fodors paperback version but it doesn't seem to. A big downside is there is no index for a quick find of Exeter or Falmouth or whatever. The God bits include the maps ... which you can enlarge and really see the city or area, the individual write-up on areas are spot on. The Fodors best are great ideas for things to see. It is also ALOT easier to bring Kindle and have this and other books loaded.

This guide is giving us a great idea of what we need to see and do when we move to London later this year. It has a good mix of straightforward destination descriptions, themed sections, and photos. We're getting excited at all our options thanks in large part to this guide!

A great book for those looking to travel. However, it seems to repeat itself quite a bit. Got as a present for my mother who is going to be traveling there soon.

Very detailed info in sections of the country. Using it to plan a trip to SW England and Wales this fall

It was just what I needed
