An instructor may pull examples from this for class work, but this is not a text that will teach you anything by reading.

The most horrible and useless textbook I've read. It was required for a class; I read one chapter and never read anything from it again. Would not recommend.

Not a helpful book. If you don't already know something, this book won't help you learn it. Don't look for any help from the book in completing at least half the homework problems.

My impression after reading four chapters is that the book is fairly easy to read and suitable for self-study. The author provides a mound of examples and problems that are written in the medical and health science context in which they arise. The early chapters have at times been terse in presentation of formulas and computations with reference to later chapters for details. I'll look forward to that deeper material.

As far as biostatistics textbooks go, I mostly liked this one. The organization and the examples were good. There is a companion website with more examples and summaries of the chapters, from what I recall. I used this textbook for intro and intermediate biostats classes for my degree in public health.

Product was advertised in better condition than received. Both front and back covers were separated from the spine. And the pages were dirty. This would merit less than good or acceptable condition for the price. Poor condition would be more accurate.

Very satisfied with the length of delivery for the Fundamentals of Biostatistics book. The package was also done very nicely and didn't seem worn like other packages I have received from sellers.

It may be my own bias talking but I love Nekos to death. This series has really gotten me out of situations when I’m feeling depressed. It’s so light and sweet it make you feel cheery inside. This manga adaptation is definitely great for people new to the Nekopara series; and regular fans of the NEKOPARA franchise. It’s funny, exotic, and has a super cutesy niche... what’s not to love? I give it a five star rating because I rarely have been so excited about any manga series up this point in my lifetime. This is truly a must read!

for the first chapter of this manga I expected it to go about the same way the story does in the VN's. I never got too play the visual novels on PC but I did play the switch version. It sort of follows after the begining of the VN with creative liberties, so go in expecting a fresh take on the story.

This chapter serves as an excellent start to help readers understand what Nekopara is about in a shorter timeframe. Because of the way manga chapters are separated, this introduction is a modified version of volume 1 that touts the feeling of the story as a whole while keeping the plot intact. Even if you've played the original game, the manga is just different enough to keep you on your toes! I highly recommend this to anyone that considers himself/herself a fan of the series!

I liked it. A very short read to give you just that small taste of what Nekopara is. It has just the right amount of lewd that you expect from the series without any actual nudity. For those who need a quick refresher on the start of La Soliel, or those who are new to the story in general, this is a great place to start off without having to by the full Visual Novel. Don't expect any hentai from this chapter, for that, go back to the Visual Novel.

I like it. its just nekopara in manga form so no complaints here. I was hoping it was more side story like, so it didnt follow exactly what the visual novel already showed but in small short books. that is just my thoughts other than that its fine especially for just 5 bucks lol.

A short introduction to the world of Nekopara is. It's cute, lewd - censored though - and costs only a price of a cup of coffee.

Its the game for the most part, but in manga form.

"In her book... Albahari makes an argument that brings us back to the Buddha's first discourse after his enlightenment... Here the Buddha lays out the Four Noble Truths, which explain the cause of dukkha -- of suffering, of unsatisfactoriness -- and the cure. He says that the basic cause of dukkha is tanha, a word usually translated as "thirst" or "craving" and sometimes as "desire." To put a finer point on it, the problem is the unquenchability of tanha, the fact that attaining our desires always leaves us unsatisfied, thirsting for more of the same or thirsting for something new."Albahari says that tanha is inextricably tied to the sensation of self, and that overcoming tanha is therefore tied to the experience of not -self. ... She's saying that tanha is deeply involved in your sense [actually "belief"] that the self is bounded; tanha sustains and strengthens the sense [again, "belief" is far more accurate] of boundedness that, during the exterior not-self experience, weakens. ..."To see the full breadth of the argument Albahari is making, you have to understand that... she considers tanha to include not just the desire for things you find pleasant...; it also includes the desire to be free of things you find unpleasant. In other words, tanha fuels not just the attraction to alluring things but also aversion of off-putting things. ..."...whether tanha is driving attraction or aversion, it entails defining the realm of the self. As Albahari has written, emotions involving tanha 'seem to point to, as a part of their content, an unspoken boundary between the identified-as self on one hand and the desired or undesired scenario in the other, as it is perceived or imagined by the witnessing subject.' Thus, tanha 'will not only indicate but also help create and drive the sense of self-other boundaries.' And vice-versa: the more clearly and deeply you feel the boundedness, the more tanha you'll be inclined to have. It has been said sometimes that western philosophy is a philosophy of the waking state. All other states of mind (e.g., oniric sleep, deep sleep) are almost ignored.In this sense, eastern philosophies seem to be more comprehensive. Exploring some powerful eastern philosophies (advaita vedanta and, specially, madhyamaka buddhism) Miri Albahari finds an underlying feature: the denying of the self as unconstructed; that is to say, that the self is a mental construct, or, as it is usually encapsulated in those traditions, that the self is illusory.But this feature has also been highlighted by at least some western philosophers. Albahari mentions Hume, James, Flannagan, Denett and Damasio (I also recall Thomas Metzinger and Galen Strawson).Of couse, an initial problem with the self is precisely the (dis)agreement about what the self is. But Albahari sets just from the beginning what concept of self she is talking about, defining it accurately in accordance with theravada buddhism (P.81). She also establishes carefully the concepts she will use when analyzing this self (e.g., construct or illusion).Next, she will argue, with admirable rigor, that the self will be an illusion if and only if it is a construct. And she will try to show that the self is an illusion contributed by two tiers:-The naturally unified consciousness (itself non-illusory).-The thoughts (emotions, moods, perceptions, ruminations, etc) belief and desire driven, that while illusorily seeming to arise from a self, in fact help build and think such self.The elimination of that type of self (were it possible as buddhism holds)would not erase awareness (or native consciousness, or consciousness without-sense-of-self) but would leave it intact.One of the theories Albahari examines more in detail and finds closer to her insights, is the one by the neuroscientist Antonio Damasio. On Damasio's theory, 'core consciousness' involves awareness coupled with a basic sense of self, though he never aludes to the 'awareness component' as a separate factor.In Albaharis's words, "awareness sans-sense-of-self is not, it would seem, a mere conceptual possibility. It is plausible to suppose that new born infants and more primitive animals" (and arahants, she will add later on)"will also harbor awareness without a sense of hurdled self".(arahants, in buddhism, are individuals who have realized nibbana: brought an end to their suffering)Though, as Albahari recognizes, "investigation into such a description would have to face the hurdle of showing that it is this awareness, this consciousness simpliciter, which carries the most basic cognitive capacities that are needed to survive in the world".But at this point it seems that the most deeply rooted intuitions collide. It reminds me of a passage from William James, somehow resonating with that idea: "only new born babes, or men in semi-coma from sleep, drugs, blows or ilenesses, may be assumed to have an experience pure in the literal sense of a 'that' which is not a definite 'what'", suggesting, perhaps, that only a deficient or underdeveloped consciousness can actually 'have' a pure experience.It would seem, then, that at this point James (expressing perhaps the ordinary intuition) and eastern philosophy divert. Awareness, or 'pure experience', woild be for James a sort of inmature or malfunctioning consciousness, whereas it would be for some eastern philosophies the real foundation of consciousness. Some eastern thought, thus, discovers, underlying all states of human 'conscious' life (e.g., waking, dreaming, slumber), and not only human by the way, a more basic, raw 'awareness' experience.But, what is this 'awareness'? Can we know and say something about it or just remain silent (a la Wittgenstein)? How to 'dive' into it without being fooled by our own constructed cognitive consciousness?I really hope that Miri Albahari keeps on exploring these issues, and sharing her insights in a way as brilliant and enlightening as this book.

The trials and constant anxiety that are a scientist's life are well presented in this book. Alex is fascinating and Irene's approach to her research with him is equally fascinating and compelling. This book is a great read for all---science people or people not involved with science and research!

What an amazing journey! I lived with a Grey back in the mid 70's, wish I had know more about parrots at the time. I was a teen just out of high school, dad bought him because he always wanted one. Romeo (who later became Juliet 4 years later when she laid eggs) was creative and playful. And I've learned since then that she loved me, I didn't understand her behavior fully, there was no internet back then so i had to surmise her actions were positive towards me. She too liked to play games, such as the time I had just installed a smoke detector in the hallway outside my bathroom. her cage was about 10 feet away in the kitchen but in view of that hallway. I was in the shower when the detector went off, i was home alone. I panicked and jumped out of the shower and went into the hallway where the alarm was not going off. I was perplexed until about a minute later. Juliet imitated the alarm and followed that up with a laugh! It took her one day to learn the sound and she thought it was funny that I reacted! Smart bird. There are more things that she did too. I miss her. Thanks for taking the time to write this book, it brought back memories while learning about the intelligence, which we know better today exists in all living creatures.

Great story about a remarkable bird. The author's relationship with Alex is heartwarming and winningly told. The things she and Alex accomplished are amazing. I liked how well she treated her birds and that she makes clear these intelligent creatures should not be left alone as solitary pets. Her research changed the way people think about birds. After reading this I watched Alex videos on YouTube.

I loved Alex from the moment that he was introduced in the story. I had the good fortune of seeing Alex on a television show many many years ago, and he grabbed my imagination and my heart right from the start. I was so proud of you Irene M. Pepperberg, for proving how brilliant even the smallest little animals are in captivity and in the wild. I grew up on a farm believing and knowing that the cats, dogs, and livestock were so much more than the visual sum of their parts--which is also why I mourned them whenever livestock were sold at market, or was sympathetic and sad when any of the animals got hurt or died unexpectedly.You and your Alex, set the whole scientific world on it's ear with your combined mental prowess. Nothing could ever be the same again. Phooey on humans being the dominant species, or belittling exceptionally bright animals for doing something miraculous as being, "just a lucky happenstance." They really are quite brilliant and extraordinary. You were glorious, and Alex was glorious, and the world once more had mysteries to explore, solve, and celebrate. You erased the boundaries, and saved us by giving us back a certain amount of magic, and miracles, mysteries, and a renewed reverence and appreciation for of all of God's creatures here on Earth.I wondered since seeing you both on television, what had become of you both. I imagined that you were both still shattering all of those stuffy scientific journalistic boundaries, with pizzazz and moxie, and reaping accolades, awards, and worldwide fame and recognition for your work. Thank you for sharing Alex with the world. I think everyone who saw Alex, was instantly enchanted with him, and loved the both of you and the groundbreaking work that you both did. In case the other dreamers forgot to tell you--thank you Irene Pepperberg, from the bottom of my heart. May God bless you and Alex, and may He protect you both--Alex in Heaven, and you on Earth, and keep you safe in His love, until you're reunited again someday in the distant future, with your beloved Alex in Heaven.--Amen

Interesting story about a scientist and the parrot who touched her so deeply not only in an academic sense, but also a humanistic one as well. They spent two decades together and formed a special and unique bond. At the end I asked myself if Alex touched Irene more deeply as a scientist or a woman. In my mind there was no doubt of the answer.

As a grey owner, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Irene's work with Alex. Although I do not engage in formal training with my boy (he's already too smart for me) I found her methods very interesting and loved reading Alex's story.

This Book was AMAZING! It was enlightening and inspirational. It make man kind realize there is more than our self centered views that we are the only intelligent forms on earth. We have so much more to learn from these animals. We need to respect and share the world with them. Thank you ALEX for touching our lives. Thank you Irene for sharing your ALEX and believing in him.

I am only half way through Alex and Me but am really enjoying it. I got my Grey when she was 67 days old and she is now 34! She has a great vocabulary and the book is giving me some insight into her thinking as well as ideas of other ways and things to teach her. She is smart like Alex was and also has a mind of her own! She is amazing and it's almost scary to hear her respond to so many things that she sees or hears you say/do that are appropriate responses Some parts of the book are a bit technical for me, but I am still enjoying it and would recommend it to any bird lover. A friend who has never had a bird read Alex and Me and thought it was very interesting and told me about the book which of course, I had to immediately order!
