WOW! Amazing book by Sir Richard. Great stories from his life that shares nuggets of wisdom to illustrate what's possible if one keeps learning, have goals, belief, determination and will to take first step.My respect for Sir Richard have grown more highly after reading Screw It,Let's Do It! Read this book, you will be better off having done it. We can all do with some inspiration and help. The book you don't read, won't help. Invest in yourself and your future today! You will be glad you did.Heck, Screw It, Just Do It!

Richard Branson is a house-hold name in global business. More often than not, we perceive entrepreneurship as a mind-boggling undertaking that keeps people awake all night. In his book titled Screw it, Let's Do it (2006),Branson brings a new perspective to the manner in which business ought to be perceived. He contends that it is feasible to have fun while making a ton of money. As he puts it, "I work hard and I play hard"(1). Brandson says he is honest when he tells people that there are no secrets to becoming a millionaire. He even insists that "there are no rules to follow in business"(12). Many folks reading Branson's words would be tempted to take them with a pinch of salt but he proves with verifiable anecdotes in this book that it is very feasible to make a lot of money without sacrificing personal pleasure. His modus operandi is "Screw it, let's do it." He does share some basic tenets that guarantee success in the business world:"Believe it can be done, have goals, never give up, prepare well, have faith in yourself, and live life to the full"(1). The lesson l learned reading Branson's book is to keep trying and to never give up.Screw it, Let's Do it is not all about business. Branson feeds readers with existential lessons. He puts a high premium on family values. In his own words, "put the family... first"(68). He describes his Virgin Corporation as "a big family"(68).This business guru gives pride of place to teamwork. He has the conviction that successful entrepreneurs have the savvy to pick the right people and reward talent. In his own words, " I have learned always to reward talent"(76).Richard Branson's book was a pleasant surprise to me. It feels good to hear from someone who is filthy rich and yet so down-to-earth. I would recommend this book to friends, family members and co-workers without hesitation. It is a tiny little book that can change one's life forever.Dr. Peter Vakunta is professor at the Defense Language Institute, Monterery-CA,USA

Short, concrete, well organized, super personal. You'll read this during a short flight, but probably will hang in your mind for a lot longer...The book is a collection of Richard Branson's lessons and life mottos. Surprisingly a lot of them (probably half) were forged when he was a kid. Much of them are very stoic-like for an apparently very-loose-guy, but totally worth learning from his stories and introspection. The book is far more than a live life to the fullest, seek happiness and follow your heart kind of reading. It goes chapter after chapter collecting a list of life commandments that let you not only have a sense of how Branson is, but also how his decision making process is like and how he weights things in business (risk). In fact, I want to know more about the Branson character and probably will read another of his books. Good buy.Side note: I haven't read any other Branson's books but to me this one feels very personal and sincere. No ghost writer here I guess.

It's rare that I stop reading a book half way through. And with this one I really wanted to but kept going only because a friend had read it and wanted to discuss. It's filled with very generic advice (such as 'Be bold, aim high' and 'Challenge yourself') that you will find in any book of this genre. The writing itself is not very good and I found the book quite boring. There is alot of time spent on Branson explaining how awesome Branson is.

This book is quite short (hence Quick Reads), but it is full of sage advice for anyone at any point of their life. Each chapter starts with several aphorisms and then goes to explain their relevance to Mr Branson and subsequently to you. It also gives a glimpse at what it has taken Mr Branson to get to the position he is in now and the underlying philosophy behind his business. While it by no means tells anywhere near the full story of any of the many tales it provides sufficient for relevance to the aphorism.I really enjoyed reading this book and will certainly read it again at least once. I picked this up at a time of change in my own life and found almost everything to be relevant and mostly what I needed to hear, without frills or complicated explanations. Clear and precise, it is a good guide for living a full and rewarding life, all the while doing, or at least trying, the right thing by all.Great read. Strongly recommend it.

I have read, shared, and recommended this book to everyone I know. It was so hard to put down. I actually read this book in a little over an hour. If the world ran every business like Sir Richard Branson, everyone might enjoy going to work everyday! This book is entertaining and inspirational.

I've always said that if you really want to learn something new go and search advice from people who are the best at what you are looking for. So... this book is a very concise but really helpful guide and anecdotes of who is considered one of the best Entrepreneurs of the world. He summons really different points of view from how he created a Magazine, his Record Company (who signed the Pistols and the Tubular Bells which is the group that created the soundtrack for The Excorcist blockbuster), his Airline Company (that strived to survive because British Ariways was very competitive to them) and even how he bought and Island!!!Not to even mention that Richard was able to interview people like John Lennon or Mick Jagger whilst in his youth. The best by so far if you want to learn on Entrepreneurship!

"...a woman running away from a tragedy, a woman running toward the same tragedy, and one stuck in the middle of it." This is The Good Liar in the author's own words. Another great read by Catherine McKenzie. All three women have a story to tell. There's an underlying sense of foreboding throughout the book, even though the catalyst is tragic enough. The pieces start falling into place and you think you're getting a handle on it all, but then there's another 1/3 of a book left! There's more to read, trust me.This is the kind of book that you read again just to see if you missed anything the first time, to see if you can pick up on the subtle clues now that you know the end. Good stuff.

I love the way Catherine McKenzie writes her characters, there are so many ways to learn who they are and yet who you wonder are they really who they seem, by the choices they make, the secrets they hide. A gas explosion decimates the building where Cecily's husband Tom works, and his co-worker Kate. Folks are running blocks away from the debris, and smoke, and fate kept one woman from being in that building while another lost her husband, and another her mother. The story is told ten years later in a documentary, with alternating voices of each women. What happens over the years is told, how these three women are connected and what their lies have propelled them to do, each chapter building more palpable suspense and questions. This book is compelling and brilliantly written and I highly recommend it as one of this authors best, if not the best to date!

I bought this book for my Kindle on Sunday and could not put it down; finished it less than 2 full days later. When you have something that's that good a read, you like to tell people about it.This is an amazing novel, about an event that joins three women together irrevocably and forever. They are bound by secrets and stories that follow them, unable to let them go, and which have deep emotional consequences.I won't recap the premise here, but I will say that it's well worth the read. And while I did guess SOME of what was coming up, a good deal of it was a surprise--the best kind of surprise possible, when the writer gets ahead of you. I did not see the final twist coming, and I'm glad. This is a book I'll re-read, probably more than once, and very happy I found it. Well worth your money and your time.

** I have received an Arc for a honest review!! **WOW!! WOW!! This is an amazing story! I absolutely LOVED it!! This is her very best one yet!! I would like to reread so I can catch more of the details.Cecily is running late. Since she was late, she was safe. She was supposed to meet her husband for a meeting in that building. There was a gas exploration in Chicago that killed five hundred thirteen people. A lot of twists and turns that kept my interest.Franny is searching for her birth mother in that building.Kate fled hoping she will be able to start over.I loved how the author intertwined three different ladies with one single event. It makes you think and feel a lot! What an amazing job Catherine! I really enjoyed it!!

I pre-ordered this novel as I enjoy the Author and her previous writings, however the back and forth of the writing as well as the slow start had me almost giving up on it. I kept on though and it all started to make sense. That is what Catherine McKenzie does and I must not have been patient enough when I began reading. Once into it I enjoyed it. The idea of running away from one's life was most intriguing to me; to up and leave your kids and spouse in an instant., where would one go? What would they do? Would have given 4/5 stars IF not for the slow start.

A year ago, an explosion in a Chicago building took the lives of more than 500 people, and injured thousands more, and the lives of three particular women are altered permanently. As the one year anniversary approaches, Cecily is morning not just the loss of her husband, but also of her best friend. She was supposed to be in the building at the time of the explosion, but was running late and instead witnessed the aftermath from the street.Kate, ran from the scene of the explosion and is hoping that her past won’t catch up with her, and Franny, a young woman in search of her birth mother, watched the horror unfold on the morning news, knowing that the woman she was so desperate to reconnect with was in the building. To honor the anniversary, a documentary is being made, but each of the women have something to hide, and are desperately hoping that their secrets remain hidden. The Good Liar was really easy to read, and had me hooked from the start, especially when I realized that the book was set in Chicago, which is where I live! The book read like more of a suspense novel to me, sort of in the vein of Big Little Lies, but a little darker. The book follows Cecily and Kate, and also contains interview transcripts with Franny. Each of these women have secrets that they are trying to keep buried, and the reader is left trying to guess about what those secrets are. I found some of the reveals to be very obvious, but there were a few twists and turns that I didn't see coming. The book was well written, and kept me engaged and wanting to know more, so it was easy to get through quickly! If you liked Big Little Lies, and want something a little darker with a mystery that has a lot of puzzle pieces in play, this will be a great choice for you!

I love Catherine McKenzie’s work, and this novel, although different from her other books, was just as enjoyable a read.On October 10 at 10 a.m. an explosion decimates an office building. Three women who escaped the tragedy are forever marked. Their stories are told in part because a documentary filmmaker interviews them about the experience.Told from the alternating points of view of the three women, lies and deceptions are slowly unveiled right until the very end, which had me smiling and thinking, bravo Ms. McKenzie. Thanks so much to NetGalley and Lake Union publishing for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this novel.

Amazon.com Review

In this Hugo-winning 1991 SF novel, Vernor Vinge gives us a wild new cosmology, a galaxy-spanning "Net of a Million Lies," some finely imagined aliens, and much nail-biting suspense. Faster-than-light travel remains impossible near Earth, deep in the galaxy's Slow Zone--but physical laws relax in the surrounding Beyond. Outside that again is the Transcend, full of unguessable, godlike "Powers." When human meddling wakes an old Power, the Blight, this spreads like a wildfire mind virus that turns whole civilizations into its unthinking tools. And the half-mythical Countermeasure, if it exists, is lost with two human children on primitive Tines World. Serious complications follow. One paranoid alien alliance blames humanity for the Blight and launches a genocidal strike. Pham Nuwen, the man who knows about Countermeasure, escapes this ruin in the spacecraft Out of Band--heading for more violence and treachery, with 500 warships soon in hot pursuit. On his destination world, the fascinating Tines are intelligent only in combination: named "individuals" are small packs of the doglike aliens. Primitive doesn't mean stupid, and opposed Tine leaders wheedle the young castaways for information about guns and radios. Low-tech war looms, with elaborately nested betrayals and schemes to seize Out of Band if it ever arrives. The tension becomes extreme... while half the Beyond debates the issues on galactic Usenet. Vinge's climax is suitably mindboggling. This epic combines the flash and dazzle of old-style space opera with modern, polished thoughtfulness. Pham Nuwen also appears in the nifty prequel set 30,000 years earlier, A Deepness in the Sky. Both recommended. --David Langford, Amazon.co.uk

“Fleeing a menace of galactic proportions, a spaceship crashes on an unfamiliar world, leaving the survivors--a pair of children--to the not-so-tender mercies of a medieval, lupine race. Responding to the crippled ship's distress signal, a rescue mission races against time to retrieve the children and recover the weapon they need to prevent the universe from being changed forever. Against a background depicting a space-time continuum stratified into 'zones of thought,' the author has created a rarity--a unique blend of hard science, high drama, and superb storytelling.” ―Library Journal“A tale that burns with the brazen energy of the best space operas of the golden age. Vinge has created a galaxy for the readers of the '90s to believe in...immense, ancient, athrum with data webs, dotted with wonders.” ―John Clute, Interzone“Vernor Vinge's best novel yet.” ―Greg Bear, author of Moving Mars“Vast, riveting, far-future saga...The overall concept astonishes; the aliens are developed with memorable skill and insight, the plot twists and turns with unputdownable tension. A masterpiece of universe building.” ―Kirkus Reviews“The first grand SF I've read in ages...Vinge is one of the best visionary writers of SF today.” ―David Brin, author of Earth“Fiercely original...Compelling ideas in the book include problems and advantages of group mind, galactic communications turbidity, and the prospect of civilizations aspiring to godhood.” ―Stewart Brand, founder of the Whole Earth Catalog

A science fiction story has to hang together–not in every detail or plot point, but enough to create a convincing scenario. This book fails that test.1. The main "alien" world in this book is medieval England–with dogs. It's divided into city-states replete with castles, dungeons, balconies, scrolls, tables, cabinets, bows and arrows. (Uh, don't bows and arrows require...fingers?) There are spies, assassins, artists apprentices–even a Queen, a council, and a Lord Chamberlain. This is Earth 2.0. I was hoping for something more inventive.2. When I say dogs, I don't mean German Shepherds. These aliens are tiny--some are menacing and villainous. Others are as cute and cuddly as teddy bears. There are vicious wolves that the author compares to gerbils. The cute and ominous work against each other.3. And the cute little dogs aren't the only silly aliens. We also have villainous butterflies. Then there are the Skroderiders, who seem to be intelligent potted plants on wheels. The author came up with gimmicky names for the hive-mind dogs–so we end up with Peregrine Wickwrackrun, and other polysyllabic monstrosities. I feel sorry for the poor soul who had to read this for the audio version.4. Speaking of the language...What's a sophont? What's an agrav? My eyes glazed over. Too much excessive jargon, too few orienting details, and often insufficient explanation to help the reader visualize the action. Here are a couple of examples:"Cricketsong is a synthetic race created as a jape/experiment/instrument by the High Willow upon its Transcendence."Or..."Saint Rihndell had a small harbor about sixteen million klicks around the RIP system. The move was even plausible, for it happened that there was a Skroderider terrane in the Harmonious Repose system–and currently it was just a few hundred kilometers from Rihndell's second harbor. They would rendezvous with the tusk-legs, exchanging repairs for two hundred seventeen flamed trellises. And if the trellises were perfectly matched, Rihndell promised to throw in an agrav refit."You can sort of, kinda get what the author means–but trying to wade through page after page of this is worse than reading a manual on tractor hyperdrive repair.5. And we also have missteps with characterization:"After a long period of normal progress, Jefri had come back with a counterplan. It consisted of a complete reworking of the tables for the accoustic interface."Who is Jefri? This kid Jefri is eight years old (though his canine sidekick is a budding Stephen Hawking). But do you know any eight-year-old kid who thinks like that?6. I'll just add that there are better stories out there. For an example of an outlandish, but somehow believable, sci-fi novel read CHILDREN OF TIME. If you like dogs with your sci-fi, I also recommend CITY by Clifford D. Simak and David W. Wixon--an older book but nicely written.

This is the first book I have read by Vernor Vinge. It is full of mind boggling ideas and wonderfully complex aliens. One mind boggling idea that the galaxy has zones. The closer you get to the galaxy center, the dumber you are, and the slower you go, the longer you live. A fast, smart, malevolent force from the outermost region reaches into the lower zones spreading death and destruction.Vinge depicts different types of non-human intelligence in a really thought provoking way.example the Tines who are dog like animals who have human or greater than human intelligence when gathered in packs; they are intelligent, pack animals that live on a close-in feudal world. Many individuals make up a personality. They don’t have hands but use their jaws and paws together in a coordinated way to get things done. The Skroderiders who are plant-like creatures who become intelligent when paired with carts that some being had created for them billions of years agoand beings of nearly god-like intelligence created by evolving computer networks, and more.He also comes up with interesting astronomy by splitting the galaxy up into zones in which physics is differentiated, so that it's possible for certain creatures to travel at beyond light speed and become advanced, and for others to be trapped in zones of slowness (like Earth). The entertainment to cost ratio of this book is enormous. It is long, it is well written, it gets you thinking when you put it down, and it makes you want to re-read it.

Vinge gives us a truly interesting, galactic-level speculation on how the universe may work, tying together physics and theology by positing that the laws of physics vary according to one's observational point. In other words, sentient beings close to the galactic core are governed by a time-space that is different from the time-space of the fringe. There are innumerable civilizations, which rise, change, and become extinct over millions and billions of years. Moreover, some of these close to the core discover space travel, and gradually "transcend" as they are able to travel farther from the core. The narrative and realization of this concept is not bad but nothing special. There is a basic good adventure story, but it is wordy and sometimes a bit immature. It's a long book, and I skipped over entire pages. Also, the book falls down sometimes on the creation of alien species, especially the dog-like race at the center of much of the action. But the concept still comes through. If Fire Upon the Deep were well-written, and all the alien species well thought-out, this would be one of the great sci-fi novels of all time.
