I went into this book with eyes of the skeptic, and I was wrong. I have never really gotten into "Riverwind", or "Goldmoon" for that matter, but in this book, I really warmed up to the character. The story was great, It didnt leave big holes, or you were never left wondering about things. I have allready been a big fan of Mr. Pierson, and this was no let down. I really hope to see some more stories about Kronn, and Catt, the Kender Brother and Sister. In the past, I have found Kender to be, well, typical annoying Kender, but, in this story, I just wanted to go meet everyone of them, (Before I'd still empty my pockets out, I mean, they are still kender after all ;-) ).So to sum up, READ THIS BOOK. -Dj Toasty

First off, I have to say that this is probably the best written Dragonlance book I've read outside of Weis & Hickman's work. Most impressive is Pierson's strong grasp of the characters. Riverwind was handled brilliantly and I liked how he gave the different kender separate personalities and didn't make them carbon copies of Tasslehoff like many other authors do. His pacing was also excellent, with enough "down time" for character development in between fight scenes, but not so much that the story starts to drag.I was disappointed when, in THE SECOND GENERATION, Riverwind and Goldmoon's children were mentioned, but we never got to meet them. This book rectifies that problem. Taking place after the Chaos War, this book tells the story of Riverwind's journey to Kendermore to help the kender stave off an ogre invasion. As stated earlier, the book is very well written and paced, but doesn't shy away from killing off characters. It makes for a very dark book helping to set up the new status quo in Ansalon after the disappearance of both the gods and their magic. Unfortunately, I read Jean Rabe's DRAGONS OF A NEW AGE trilogy first and so more or less knew what would happen by the end. I highly recommend reading this series (this book being the first of five in the BRIDGES OF TIME saga) before jumping into Rabe's trilogy. If you liked what Weis and Hickman have written in this setting, you'll most likely enjoy this entry as it has a similar feeling to what they've done. A quick read, but thoroughly enjoyable.

I have been a fan of Dragonlance for almost 15 years, having first read the original trilogy (Dragonlance Chronicles: Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night, and Dragons of Spring Dawning) when I was around age 13. I remember staying up till dawn, unable to put the books down! Since then, the series has become rather popular, and dozens of novels set in the Dragonlance world have been written. While most of them are a fun read for adults, few of them are as well written and truly capture the spirit of the Dragonlance world as "Spirit of the Wind." While a popular series, Dragonlance is often criticized for being too contrived and simple for adult readers. So many authors have put their hands into creating the Dragonlance world, but many readers will agree that few have managed to capture the imagination as much as the original Chronicles. With this novel, however, Chris Pierson succeeded in doing so. It is assumed from the summary of the book that this novel tells the story of the last campaign of Riverwind, one of the original companions from Chronicles. What isn't assumed, however, is that Riverwind's death would be so beautifully written as to merit a ranking besides the deaths of Flint and Sturm (two beloved characters whose memorable deaths, written by the original authors Weis and Hickman, are often heralded as the most moving moments in Dragonlance literature). My hat is off to Mr. Pierson, who proved that not all Dragonlance novels are merely a "fun read," and for making an adult married woman feel like a 13-year-old again!

The best novels in the Dragonlance series are undoubtedly the ones written by the original authors - Margret Weiss and Tracy Hickman. Everything else just seemed like imitators playing in the same yard. Some books in the series do stand out of the pack, and 'Spirit of the Wind' is definately one of them. The story centers around Riverwind, one of the original characters from the first trilogy in the series. Riverwind is dying, and decides to leave the world not in a bed, but in battle. He volunteers himself to aid two poor souls in their attempt to defend their homeland against a hideous dragon. It's a story of sacrifice and bravery, and is very well written. At times it seemed to steal from David Gemmell's excellent book 'Legend', but all in all quite a pleasure to read.

This is one of the best written DL books around. Mr. Pierson has a very good grasp on keeping his readers wanting more. His battle scenes are well thought out (and acted), his characters never lose who they are (ie. they never act like anyone else, they stay true to form), and its always nice to revisit some old friends and make some new ones too!Riverwind was not Kendermore's first choice of heroes but as Paxina states "You'll do!" The red dragon Malystryx is out for conquest, and she enlists the Ogres to help pave her way. Little by the little Malys' magic changes the land around her, and here Kendermore and Kenderwood are her targets. How does an aging Hero of the Lance deal with this mess? Read and find out, you won't be dissapointed!

I wasnt sure if i would like this book because i was never a Riverwind fan. But the energy involved in this book really made it a winner. I couldn't believe it when i found myself caring for the characters and I also respect the ways in which he kills characters. Killing characters properly is crucial in a good fantasy and its done here. Way to go Chris and way to bring us a proper view of the plainsman we never knew!

This was a really good book. Even if the story itself had [been bad], I'd have recommended it based on the first 15 or so pages alone. There was a meeting of old friends that was so well written it could've been written by W&H themselves. Truly moving. This story had everything you've come to expect from a good DL book: good plot, great characters who become like family & the sorrow that comes from losing them. Great book.

Love Disguised

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up–This novel begins slowly but quickly builds steam. Young and charismatic Will Shakespeare longs to escape Stratford to become a playwright in London, an occupation frowned on by his father. Fate and duty seem to interweave as Will is sent to London to deal with his father's debt. There he meets his muse, a witty and savvy barmaid named Long Meg, who is attempting to escape her past. When Will is robbed, Meg offers the help of her brother Mack (Long Meg in disguise). The two work together to recover Will's fortune and settle his father's debt as they work together to realize Will's dreams. Chapters alternate between Will's story and Meg's, giving readers a chance to know both of them. The novel contains many allusions to the Bard's works that fans will delight in, while readers unfamiliar with them will enjoy the story on its own merit. The author includes a note highlighting the historical facts that influenced her tale as well as some resources for further reading. Love Disguised will leave readers inspired to delve into the works of Shakespeare and discover Klein's sources of inspiration.–Tiffany Davis, Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NYα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist

*Starred Review* Creatively interweaving fact and fiction, Klein (Ophelia, 2006) imagines Shakespeare’s youth in this immersing tale. It’s 1582, and 18-year-old Will Shakespeare longs to escape Stratford and his strict father to pursue acting and playwriting. In London on family matters, he meets teen pub-maid Meg Macdougall, an orphan, who is attempting to overcome, and conceal, her childhood by thieving and disguising herself as a boy named “Mack.” When Will is robbed, Meg offers Mack’s assistance. Meanwhile, pub-servant Violetta enlists Meg/Mack’s help in wooing Will, but Will and Meg start developing feelings for one another. Multiple plots unfold and, as characters converge, their experiences, individually and together, reveal the complexities of relationships, love, and the pursuit of dreams. Told in alternating stories, and employing Elizabethan theater classic-comedic devices (disguises, romantic mix-ups, etc.), Klein vividly portrays time and place in descriptive prose, rich with historical detail and archaic flavor. Will and Meg are distinctly drawn, engaging protagonists journeying toward self-discovery in this entertaining, inventive story for historical-fiction and theater fans. The abundant Shakespearean/literary allusions will resonate most with those Bard-familiar, but won’t lessen new-to-Shakespeare readers’ enjoyment. The endnote provides historical context, story inspirations, and further-reading suggestions. Grades 7-12. --Shelle Rosenfeld

Any mention of Shakespeare, any at all, and I will usually be down to read or watch something. So when Love Disguised popped up on my radar, I just had to check it out. While it was a fun, diverting read, it also fell into the realm of slightly predictable and not very memorable. As always, here's the list of the things I liked and the things I didn't like about this book:The references to Shakespeare's works were such fun. It felt like a bit of an Easter Egg hunt, really. With every chapter read, there were plots or personalities that reminded me of what Shakespeare works I have read. I thought it was fun, really, as it's already clear I'm a big fan of Will's. Plus, it seemed to all make sense... In a ridiculous sort of way,It was basically a mad set of events, reminiscent of Shakespeare's own comedies. Despite being slightly over the top, it was basically hilarious! Honestly, it provided a good laugh when I read it on my plane ride. As I already mentioned, the story was ridiculous but in the best way. At the very least, I was entertained. There was no real character development. While the cast of characters is no doubt part of the entertainment, they were also easily mixed up. I truly didn't feel much of a connection to any of them, even the main ones. This usually happens when I don't sense that a character's grown throughout the story, which was the case here. The story was fun, true, but it was also forgettable. The instant I shut the book, it was like I'd never read it. Facts and characters got all mixed up in my head, as it didn't leave a real impression. In the end, the fact that there isn't much I can say about this book is what really says it all. Love Disguised could have been much more than it was but failed to really meet any of my personal expectations. It's good enough if you're bored on a subway and in need of something to pass the time, but overall, I wouldn't recommend it.

I will make an admission here: I am an English major who hates Shakespeare. Well, most Shakespeare, except for Twelfth Night and a few others. So when I found out Lisa Klein had written a ya novel about how Shakespeare came up with the plot for Twelfth Night, I jumped on it. Sadly, what I found was mostly a trite and overwrought story that left me laughing at it's weirdness in the end-and not in a good way.The book opens up with a LOT of telling. (you know, in the show vs. tell fashion that most writers hear about at some point.) We get the complete background on Meg and Will, which reads more like a bio than a piece of writing meant to engage a reader. True, Meg has a really interesting background, as her father died in prison and her mother went mad with grief, thinking she'd killed him, then killed the priest she was sleeping with to try and relieve his debts before jumping off a warf. Will's is stitched together from historical fact, all about his father and blah blah blah. I found myself skipping ahead just to get to a point where something actually happened. Then Will falls in love with the younger Hathaway sister, sleeps with the older one by mistake and runs off to London to stand for his soon-to-be-imprisoned father in court. There he meets Meg, once a thief, now a tavern maid, who is unusually large for her age. Will is robbed by some of Meg's old companions, and Meg becomes "Mack," Meg's "twin brother," in order to help him get his money back. If you've read Twelfth Night, you can put together a lot of what happens after that. If not ... so much confusion ensues.I've mentioned that the beginning was slow, but even more than that, the language used was overwrought. I can tell Klein was trying to use English as Shakespeare and his companions would have spoken it, but it didn't work for me. I've read a lot of historical fiction, and I've seen people use older English in ways that isn't clunky, but this ... didn't work. I was bored and the characters seemed like cartoons from a melodrama instead of people I wanted to relate to. Because of this, I disliked most of the characters from the start, from the overly dramatic Violetta to the overly boisterous Overby and the overly stereotypical faux-villains, who were more like something out of a dark Three Stooges. The one shining character in all this, who kept me going through the entire book, was Meg. Her ingenuity got her out of a dark hole when her parents died, her loyalty was fierce and her heart was good and righteous at all times. Sometimes, yes, she did feel a little overly righteous, but I was pretty ok with it all most of the time. Her confusion between her identities of Mack and Meg were more than comical-it was serious and it was real. It was her personality and inner struggles that kept me going, even when all the other characters had me ready to put the book down and DNF it.This also includes Will Shakespeare. As a main character, he was clumsy, naive and bland. He had moments of genius, but those ideas could only work if Meg was right there, pushing them along. I understand that Meg and Will's friendship was the main point of this book, but it started seeming like Will was incapable of doing anything unless Meg was secretly pushing it from behind. All in all, I was not impressed by this book. I thought the plot was crazy and overdone-and in the end got so confusing I wasn't sure how it even worked out. The characters were mostly irksome, except for the one shining light that was Meg. If you're a real lover of Twelfth Night, then this might interest you out of parody's sake, but otherwise I'd suggest getting this one for the library if you're at all interested.

Review

Bigfoot Visits the Big Cities of the World is a colorful, addictive, and wholesomely absorbing pick for young ones, old ones, and everyone in between. --The Portsmouth ReviewThis book is such a fun search and find book. I love Bigfoot, kind of obsessed actually. As are my kids. It has become one of our favorite bedtime routines. It really never gets old. Plus, you get to talk about all the places Bigfoot is visiting, which adds ever more fun. A great book for the kids or the entire family. --Mrs. Mommy BooknerdI like the little bit of Bigfoot lore that was included, including the origin of the name and they way the creature is seen and what they are called in a variety of cultures, to make the hunt more interesting to young readers. There is also a good amount of information and history about each of the cities that bigfoot is hiding in throughout this book. I like the inclusions of real photographs from the locations, as well as the seek and find illustrations. I think many young readers will skip over the informational bits and just to the bigfoot hunts, but I feel like some will take the time to read, and any chance for them to continue learning I will fully support. Some of the seek and finds were challenging, but in a good way. I enjoyed the book and think that most that would pick up this style of book will agree.--Sharon the LibrarianI like this book. This was a Christmas gift for our 8 yr. old grandson who is into Yetis and such. He also likes Where's Waldo type books. This book has that but it was not what I was expecting. It is actually educational combined with fun. There are different geographical locations with information and things to do or learn throughout the book as well as the seek and find pages.

Purchased as a birthday gift for a grandparent. He introduced my son to Bigfoot and they both get a kick out of watching shows. The two of them had fun looking at this book together. It features search pages as well as informative pages about each of the cities Bigfoot is hiding in. Entertaining and educational. A cute gift for any Bigfoot fan.

This is more than a look and find book. It gives a little history and known facts about some of the biggest cities in the world and then has a find the big foot page. Love how the child can get some reading in and a little knowledge as well. I'm giving this as a gift and I can't wait to give it.

Pretty good seek and find. My only reason for giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it's a bit weird to me that only half of the illustrations are colored in. It makes it look a bit unfinished and a little less challenging/fun.

The Bigfoot fan in this family really liked it. Some of the hidden items were easier to find but others were a challenge. Great stories/writing included to break up the puzzles.

Perfect for a Yeti fan who is 7 years old. He will enjoy the puzzle to find yeti, as well as learn about geographical locations.

Fun activities...challenging to find all the items. My granddaughters (ages 5 & 7) enjoyed briefly, then were bored.

my kid found everything so fast and the illustration was not my favorite
