Nice pictures and very informativew

Great book arrived on time

Very clean and serious. Recommandée

This is a fascinatinating book that is at once interesting as it is beautiful in imagery. The Walters Art Musuem boasts the largest Ethiopin art outside of Ethiopia alongside a permanent collection of Byzantium and Russian art. The Ethiopian collection in the City of Baltimore is only one part of a museum that builds it's strengths on the art of the eastern Orthodox world. The collective authors give a brief but satisfying history of Ethiopia and its significance in the ancient world along the Mediterrenean trade route. There is also an overview of daily life and religious practices, art history and the role of the Cross, illuminated manuscripts and painted icons that rivalved some of the best in the Orthodox world. The written word is essential to understanding the magnificent art that is displayed. If you are interested in icon art you will love this book with it's unique representations. I also found the older wood work to be exceptionally beautiful and intricate in craftsmanship. The results are some of the most beautiful processional crosses you will probabaly ever see. Later these crosses were made to be more permanent using bronze. Probably equally has impressive are the icon painting and hand made illuminated books that were used for ritualistic purposes in Ethiopion culture. The plates in the book come from the museum catalogue and date from the 4th to the 18th century. The religious nature of the works reflect a combination of African roots and Christian influence. Jesus, Mary and all the saints are painted with distinctively non- Western features. It is unfortunate that there is no cover art availbale on this page otherwise you would be able to see the painting of baby Jesus and the Archangels with small afros as he sits in the arms of Mary.Much of the art is uncredited and the artist is lost in antiquity and known only as an annonymous painter. The Christian kingdoms art of Ethiopia gets its deserved recognition alongside the art of Russia and Byzantium in this book. The book features some of the most colorful unique Christian art imagineable. There is also a good bibliography featuring a list of over fifty books for further scholarship. This is the first time this magnificent collection is available in publication and will surely satisfy those interested in icon painting and the art of the Orthodox world.

the book arrived on time and in perfect condition. Based on my experience I would recomend seller. Book is the best I have been able to obtain and provides excellent information for anybody interested in Ethiopian art, which is not too well-kown.

This is a review of the Kindle edition. It's really about 4,200 locations long, with the rest covering orders of battle.Otto Carius was a highly decorated soldier, being the 535th Wehrmacht soldier to receive the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Order of the Iron Cross and the Wound Badge in Gold for being wounded on five different occasions. It's amazing he survived his serious wounds at the end. He was a tanker, serving in Pz38(t)'s and Tigers. The focus is on the Eastern front and his Tiger, as noted the main reason for the book being written. His views of the 38 aren't a shock at all, if you have read about tanks of WWII.I'm a bit surprised that any reviewer would be surprised that the author defends his comrades. Or has a view of the war that isn't the politically correct one. Soldiers don't make policy, that's done by the politicians. Anyone who thinks that any side in war gets out of it clean, doesn't know much about it. My father was a Marine in Korea, and there were things that happened there that would have been called war crimes if we had lost. Or read Dispatches of a Motorcycle Rider - as British troops shot French civilians for being "snipers" or "spies" in WWI. History is written by the victors, though it's always good to read all sides.Carius explains why they fought, and the respect that they developed for "Ivan". Interestingly, he credits accurate artillery fire to a rumor of female gunners. The feeling of dread as the Russians keep coming and coming and that horrible winter of 1941 is clear to see.The conversation with Himmler is fascinating. He didn't think much of the Americans, or German civilians at the end.The picture are a great touch, and the English translations of the awards as well. The English translation could use a good scrubbing - or perhaps just the Kindle version.Easy to recommend if you have any interest in World War II. The fact alone that he admits to losing it and "bugging out" during one battle is remarkable.

I first learned about Otto Carius at the Saumur Tank Museum where a likeness of him was featured next to their Tiger tank.During the course of reading Tigers in the Mud, it saddened me to hear that Otto passed away at the age of 92. I understand he happily owned and operated a pharmacy after the war called Tiger Apotheke.Aside from eating T-34s for lunch, there are several the duties of a Tiger tank commander that I never considered before. Otto spent a lot of time on a motorcycle or in a kubel doing reconnaissance patrols prior to the attack. Afterwards he would have to go back with his tank and recovery vehicles to rescue other damaged Tigers. These operations were often more hair-raising than the actual battles. Also, little details like the tanks not having a heating system for the crew really blew my mind. Those poor guys were sitting in a steel ice-box in the middle of a frigid Russian winter. Parts of his body were frost-bitten from simply touching the inner walls of his Tiger.Leadership is a major theme in this book and the frustration of new commanding officers who wouldn't heed the advice of seasoned front line tankers seems to be a recurring event. (It brought to mind the classic John Ford western, Fort Apache.) Many things go wrong in the memoir and Otto is not afraid to admit mistakes and learn from them. Many soldiers fell victim to work-related injuries, accidents and friendly-fire. One of the saddest parts of the story is when their entire infantry is wiped out by their own Nebelwefer artillery barrage. It took me about a week to finish the book and on the kindle version 75% is actually the end of the novel. The remaining 25% is documents and field notes and glossary. I would actually recommend looking over the glossary prior to reading to familiarize yourself with some of the terminology. The dry, bare-bone accounts at the end make me appreciate Otto's ability to make his story compelling and full of intrigue, excitement, frustration, pain, and ultimately complete disappointment. Those Amazon reviewers that criticize Ott's writing need to give the guy a break..he's a German tank commander not a poet. The only weakness of the book is a lack of maps that show the location of these villages and towns as his unit lumbers around eastern Europe. Also some of the 'score charts' and award documents at the end could have been integrated into the text. Every so often, I would have liked to know his running total of kills to judge how far along he was in his career.Overall, highly recommend reading this if you have any interest in tank warfare or Tiger tanks in general. In closing I would like to share a quote from Otto that sums up his basic philosophy as a soldier:"We held our positions and gave it our best because we were bound by law. And when we couldn't even think of that anymore, because we were half-mad from the hardship, cold, and hunger, then we held out because of fear and instinct."

And it has been way too long in coming. For decades I have done low level development on systems ranging from mainframes and supercomputers and vast distributed telecommunications systems to tiny microcontrollers and everything in between. I'm the kind of software developer that owns (and needs) two logic analyzers and an oscilloscope. When I started doing Android platform work -- that stuff that is in C and C++ and even snippets of assembler and requires that you know the nitty gritty details of how the platform works under the hood -- I found little in the way of either books or online documentation that was helpful. Yaghmour's book is the one reference that actually speaks to me in the language and terminology that I use day to day and addresses the kinds of concerns that I have. If you are the "systems guy", or even if you're an application developer that just wants to know more about what goes on when you leave the Java world, I would recommend this book.

Absolutely wonderful for not only customizing your android installation but it takes you through a well laid out overview of the Android system. It goes more in-depth with the build systems and customizing Android. It has a bit of system coverage of the internals of the Android system. I wish it covered building your own Androidized Kernel. More for the system developer not the app developer.

I have been porting Android to embedded devices the past 2 months. I had no prior knowledge of Android and like the author mentions in the introduction, Android was quite different from embedded Linux. I am left with a lot of questions since I started porting and 1/2 hour with this book already proved its worth.

Pretty much THE book on porting android to a given hardware. Book was good enough that I took a week long class with the author to further my knowledge. Karim knows his stuff.

This book is super well-written. Makes reading about hardware internals a joy. Thanks. I look forward to the next edition, which I hear is out soon.

I am still reading but I can say that there is information for most people start hacking Android.

Excellent discussion on how to setup/build/customize the android system. There is little documentation for this anywhere else that I could find. Very useful!

This book helps me tremendously in understanding how embedded Android works. It's the best book out there on this topic. I highly recommend it.

I was drawn to this book based upon Gray's response to Stephen Pinker's recent tome on Progress, and based upon the various articles and videos of Gray online. I have been studying the topic of progress for several decades and was interested in hearing more of his views. The two fundamental mistakes Gray makes, are first that he never carefully defines the topic of progress, and second that he then confuses what is known as the myth of progress with the possibility and desirability of progress. These are two distinct topics, and conflating the two basically interferes with his grasp of the subject. The myth of progress is that progress is not just desirable, but INEVITABLE, and that it comes about via rationalism, science, evolution, class revolution, freedom, divine providence or whatever. Gray rightly takes down these various myths. Progress is not inevitable, is not the same thing as evolution, and is not guaranteed via any of the above simplistic paths. However, in throwing out the bath water of inevitability and naive explanations, he also tosses out the baby. In this case, by assaulting the silly, semi religious myth, he also dismisses the mere possibility of progress. This is the idea that progress, though rare and difficult, is both possible in some places and times and is desirable. There is a giant distinction between progress being possible and progress being inevitable. All this confusion is possible because Gray refuses to ever fully define and flesh out his term.Compare this to Pinker's recent book "Enlightenment Now". Pinker defines progress as human flourishing as measured by empirical gains in things people commonly want such as health, sustenance, abundance, peace, freedom, equal treatment, literacy, knowledge, intelligence, happiness, opportunity, stimulation and so on. Pinker shows that these have increased over the past 200 years globally, therefore based upon the definition of human flourishing he supplies, progress is possible and has occurred. It is not inevitable. Obviously substantially more improvement is desirable, but Pinker argues that further advance is at least possible. We can argue about his recipe for further gains, and whether we will or will not be able to actually continue to advance, but his book is extremely clear and well supported empirically.By not defining his terms, Gray makes a total mess of the topic (I assume intellectual sloppiness not malicious desire to misinform). Instead of focusing on any possibility of progress, he constantly shows how it is not inevitable and then acts as if he has refuted the idea. He refuses to define the term, tears down obviously absurd versions and caricatures of the concept and pretends he has taken down the realistic versions.Just about every statement and argument Gray makes is (in contrast to Pinker) unsupported with any evidence, or is supported with an anecdote or by decrying that the world is not yet perfect and thus no progress has been made (though progress clearly is distinct from perfection as anyone who actually defines the terms knows). For example, he suggests that there has been no progress on the issue of torture, we just changed the name to "enhanced interrogation." He admits in this paragraph that "any reduction in universal evils is an advance in civilization" but goes on to note that advances can be lost, broken or forgotten. Fair enough, but the question remains has there been a net reduction in slavery, torture, poverty, infant death, disease, and so forth? Pinker, again, provides hundreds of pages of empirical global data with charts and graphs and trend lines. They have all improved, and by a lot. Gray just gives sweeping statements without any support, apparently hoping that his readers will just share his bias and nod along in agreement.Slavery was widespread with significant portions of humanity in chains a hundred years ago. It was both legally and morally acceptable in most nations. Now it is rare, illegal virtually everywhere, and morally repugnant to most people. If the abolition of slavery and the advance of the civil rights movements are not progressive advances, then what is?Other criticisms of his book are that he is confused on how evolution works (though he is right that it is distinct from progress). No evolution is not, as he suggests, primarily about drift, it is a process of variation, selection and replication which leads to adaptation and problem solving. He suggests that nobody has come up with a unit of selection or mechanism of evolution within society. Is he unaware of the writings of Boyd, Richerson, Henrich, Fog, Mesoudi and so on? If he Is unaware, why is he writing on the topic? If he is aware, why is he not addressing their arguments and mechanisms? (And for the record, Darwin did not have or require a unit of selection when he wrote the Origin of The Species.)Finally, his take on the possibility of "unending economic expansion" is ill informed. He sweepingly assures us that the plight of the American worker leads to "mass poverty", "permanent unemployment", and "drug dealing and sex work". Of course anyone actually familiar with economic trends knows that the GDP per capita in the US is the highest ever, and is currently about 50 times higher than the historic global average. Per capita median income has increased by about 50% since 1980, and is up sharply since the recent recession (too the highest level ever). Unemployment is currently at historic lows, and since Gray is too sloppy to provide trend data on drugs and prostitution, (frankly I have no idea if they have been increasing or decreasing long term, and neither does anyone just reading Gray), I will not address this.As any student of economics should know, there is no intrinsic limit in the value creation potential of a market. Wealth is a measure of exchangeable problem solving ability, comprised not just of materials and energy, but also ideas. It is true there is a limit on the amount of materials and energy we can capture in the solar system (though we are surely thousands of years away from this limit), but what there is no limit on is the potential ideas and problem solving ability. There is no conservation of ideas or value principal in physics. Thus, there is no intrinsic limit on value creation or wealth for humanity. In summary, this is an extremely non-serious book on the topic of progress. Gray fails to define his terms, or support any of his sweeping generalizations with anything other than anecdotes. He creates poorly drafted straw men then sweeps them away with unsupported arguments he hopes his readers will just accept at face value. He is confused not just on progress, but on evolution, cultural evolution and economics. If you already agree with Gray and you want to bolster your bias on the topic, then you will enjoy this book. Otherwise, I would suggest anyone reading this book would be more misinformed on the topic after reading it than before. Thus it gets the lowest possible score.

This new book by John Gray is a meditation on how we deal with the world when our faith in progress and human betterment deserts us. It explores the theme through the prisms of literature, art, philosophy, and to a lesser extent, psychology rather than being a scientific or historical study. As with all of Gray's work, it has some telling insights and observations, and ranges over a fascinating mix of the familiar and obscure to give depth and substance to his ideas. The Silence of Animals is arranged in three parts. The first looks at the idea of progress and how people's belief in it has disintegrated when faced with human barbarity. The two world wars left ruin in their wake and Gray looks at the reactions of writers such as J G Ballard, Norman Lewis and Stefan Zweig to the rapid disappearance of civilised behaviour in the brutality of war. Barbarism can also emerge from economic crisis: the Great Depression and the inflation in inter-war Germany, and the financial crash of 2008, each destroyed the wealth of countless families. They rendered years of faith in saving and building a future utterly meaningless, even as the alchemists of finance breathed a sigh of relief over their canapés at finding their own fortunes unscathed.Gray was previously an academic political theorist and he sees authoritarian politics, whether of the left or right, as an attempt to deny the chaos of reality and to fake a sense of order. People like certainty and the dream of a better day to come, and therein perhaps lies the appeal of those charlatans who would have us believe that they can plan and control our future. In the end, progress is a myth because evolution is about survival, not about constant improvement. Gray characterises evolution as a process of drift rather than a rise to ever greater heights of rationality, peace and order. In the second part of the book Gray looks at the ideas of Sigmund Freud and in particular his views on myth creation. Freud saw the internal self as forever at war between the forces of Eros (love, creativity) and Thanatos (hatred, destruction). Psychoanalysis can be seen as a process of coming to terms with this perpetual disorder. We might be driven by unconscious forces over which we have no control, but by accepting and trying to recognise them we can attain some degree of autonomy in our lives. All our constructions of the world are myths of one kind or another. Gray rejects Jung's idea of universal myths and notes that museums are full of old gods that people once thought were eternal and immortal. Our stories about the world change all the time, as do we, and part of Freud's work was to reconcile us with our ever-emergent selves.Science appears to be different and Gray makes a neat distinction between scientific method, which tests our beliefs against facts, and the way we usually operate which is to select the facts that reinforce our beliefs. We are an incorrigibly irrational lot. But even science is myth-like: any scientific theory only works for a certain period of time before being replaced by another or being rendered irrelevant by a new paradigm. Our understanding of the world is thus made up of changing theories and stories, often inconsistent and sometimes plain barmy, and none of them ever fully explains everything. Spending your days searching for a theory of everything? Get a life.Given that the world is chaotic and that our stories and theories about it are patchy and ephemeral, how can we best engage with the world? This is the theme of the final section of the book. Here Gray investigates how people have sought to look at the world from different perspectives and analyses two extraordinary books by J A Baker, who tried to see the world through the eyes of animals. He also looks at how people have pursued silence and used meditation, exercises that try to take us out of the hubbub of the world and the manic chatter in our heads. The value of these activities is that they change us and our perceptions of (and enjoyment of) the world. The world view depicted by Gray might seem to presume pessimism and often Gray's thoughts appear this way, but accepting the chaos of the world and our inability to fully grasp it can also be refreshing and liberating, and can heighten our enjoyment of ourselves, other people and the world about us. Being alive becomes interesting in itself. There is no discussion of the French existentialist philosophers, and surprisingly no discussion of Buddhism, even though these two have a lot in common with Gray's perspective. The final section of the book felt incomplete as a result. There is also far too little about the human need for certainty in life and how this blinds us to the greater joys of the world. In the first part of the book he consigns the progress myth to the rubbish bin, but if we have to live by myths is the progress one so bad? Public policy, education systems and charitable aid are all built on the lie of progress but they have produced some positive social results. Gray never considers whether some myths might be preferable to others and how we might decide that. There is a wealth of engrossing detail in this book, supplemented by extensive notes. His exploration of some of the lesser known byways in literature whetted my appetite to pursue them further. Even if you find Gray's views unconvincing, the journey with him is well informed and never dull. This work will inspire you to reflect on how you understand yourself and the world in which you have randomly arrived.

Review

"Furniture as micro-architecture? AnnaYudina in her book FURNITECTURE published by Thames & Hudson presents a new and quite fascinating area of design - architectural furniture that transform the space. This inconspicuous squared book offers amazingcontent and given the amount of projects it features, it's welldesigned. There are many books on design but only a few on such acaptivating subject and nice layout." (BOA: Books on Art) - boablog.net/work/#/furnitecture/"Creating a new compound word is the first step to decoding a trend, and 'furnitecture' is no exception. The author Anna Yudina has trawled the past decade of visual culture and compiled a selection of product design that's intended to transform the space it occupies." - Wallpaper "Anna Yudina's book is not to be taken at face value: behind the images, there's a story. (...) It may be excessive to say that Yudina flirts with deconstructing the hierarchy that sees architecture dominant over furniture, but it's not incorrect to claim that she's at least attempting to bring things back into balance by exploring the borderline between the two types of design: interior and exterior. And she does it very well, with plenty of examples" - PianoprimoÂ

As what I consider to be a hard core industrial and interior designer and architect, I found this book useful and worth purchasing. I follow this stuff closely. It is substantially typical pictorial survey and "catalogue" of mostly 21st century interior "micro-architecture" and furniture. The authors categorization of the examples represented in the book into "types" is useful and what I would consider accurate. However, if your looking for scholarship, this is not the book for you.

A good book

Happy to add to library but wish it was a little more in depth

i like it very much

i hated this book. i have no idea why people praise it so much. i decided to read it because i saw it ranked highly in entertainment magazine. i really tried to like it. i really did.the big problem: i cant tell the two characters apart. the story is from the perspective of two boys who fall in love, but i could never know who is who. like “is this the kid with the ex boyfriend or the kid with the job internship or what?” i never knew. because of this, i never connected to either of the boys. if they died i literally wouldnt be sad. i felt no connection to them.also, arthur (one of the two main characters) is a toxic and jealous person. pretty much all the cheap drama in the story is about how he’s jealous of bens exboyfriend and he’s having himself little pity parties. and ben is always like “sorry” and theres no reason to be sorry hes just feeding arthurs toxic nature.also, the book is sporting so many pop culture references that it feels like theyre shoving it down our throats. maybe i’m just a little biased because i despise musicals and that is much of what ben and arthur obsess about, but they repeatedly mention multiple pop culture things and it gets insanely cringey.the book also moves too slow. it took 200 pages for ben and arthur to start dating. TWO HUNDRED!! THATS HALF THE BOOK!! also, the ending was dragged out and i kept expecting to turn the page and see the acknowledgements but it just kept going, just kept stabbing me again and again.i tried to enjoy this book. i really, really did. i read the whole thing despite being bored the whole time. i actually hoped someone would die so it would get interesting. i wish i had never decided to read it. a lot of people seem to enjoy it, so maybe you will too, but heed this warning. its a terrible book.

“I don’t know if we’re a love story or a story about love.”Right up front: this book brought tears to my eyes at the end. It channeled all the trauma of being a teenager, as well as the joy of coming out at last. The story of Ben and Arthur should be entirely different from my own story – they could practically be my grandchildren. But no, it resonated deeply in me, both as a gay man, and a father.I am intensely cynical when I approach young adult novels from mainstream publishers, particularly when they have gay content. Why? Not sure, but I think it’s because so many mainstream publishers ignore so much great LGBT content, I automatically wonder “why this book?” Is it because it’s safe, acceptable, within received norms as to how much gay is ok?Being a gay teenager in high school in the very early seventies was awful. Nobody was out. Everyone was afraid. My own experience was not technically that bad, but in retrospect, I was as confused and frightened and isolated as any closeted gay teen at the time. The closet was the default for all of us. Of course, I didn’t have books like this back then. I had The Boys in the Band.Albertalli and Silvera create a lovely rhythm with the structure of this book, alternating between the viewpoints of Puerto Rican Ben from Manhattan and Jewish Arthur from ex-urban Atlanta. These seventeen-year-olds are fully fleshed-out, richly dimensional. They observe the world around them closely, and they respond to it. Most importantly of all, they have parents they love (in that eye-rolling teenaged way) and friends who matter hugely in their lives. We see through these boys’ eyes, and we see a lot.The futility of high-school romances is sort of at the center of this book, but I think that’s a bit of a red herring. The interplay between Ben’s wounded cynicism and Arthur’s starry-eyed romanticism is critical to their relationship with each other, but it’s also essential in their relationship to their friends – Jessie and Ethan for Arthur, and the more complex quartet of Dylan, Harriet, Hudson and Samantha for Ben. All these young people need each other but are groping forward in their hormone-infused teen lives to figure out how the different kinds of love – love of family, love of friends, romantic love – are going to be part of them. It is confusing and aggravating and frightening. Which, as I remember if I think very hard on my own high-school years, is exactly right.I want to say that there’s no “happy ending” for this book, but in fact there is: it’s just not the kind of happy ending we as a culture are primed to see in a romantic story. I will give no detail, but suffice it to say that as I ended this book, blinking away tears, I felt hopeful and comforted. Maturity is something I wasn’t looking for in these pages, and its discovery therein was an unexpected gift.

I have a love/ hate relationship with Albertalli. I really liked Simon VS The Homo Sapiens Agenda and The Upside of Unrequited with their adorable characters and charming/ hilarious/ sometimes heartbreaking plots. I soared through these books and would recommend them to anyone- especially John Green fans. Then there was Leah On the Off Beat, which mostly angered me. I didn’t like her, or the way she acted toward her friends, how the love interest played itself out…. the book just pissed me off most of the time, with just barely enough good to keep me moving forward. What If It’s Us Brings out the best of this author- maybe due to the collab? The characters are purely magical even as they are each incredibly messy and neurotic in their own ways. I think it’s their imperfections that made them so fabulous. The premise was fantastic, the play between characters was perfect, and you saw a lot of character growth which is always a plus for me. My favorite character was definitely Dylan, the over the top best friend. I felt like he was the perfect foil for Ben. For me, this was the best book of the author’s to date. I loved it! My only objection, and it’s purely personal, I felt like the ending was too open. I want closure! And I want it to be EPIC. Still, five stars all the way. On the adult content scale, there’s some language, drinking, sexual innuendo and light sexual content. It’s not too crazy, and I would still give this one to a youngish teen. I give it a three.

Buy it. The emotional roller coaster it takes you on is the best ive ever been blessed to read! After finishing all 433 pages in approximately 8 hours, i have to say it has easily replaced another book as my all time favorite.
