This was one of the first books my daughter was fascinated by in our history curriculum and it just so happens that I had chosen it to substitute something else. Best decision I made in substitution. It is a fantastic book based in real facts (though I'm not sure to what extent) that my daughter could engage in but also that helped her interact with history in a way that now she knows some of the challenges of the time, some information of the character of George Washington as well as the dynamic of the issue of slavery and race in the time period and a mature way of processing these issues in a way my 6 year old could begin to understand a complex concept.

Excellent educational material for young Black girls and adults alike. Shows us that we were instrumental in every phase of the making of this nation.

Therefore I assume the book is written for visitors - and this is the problem. As a purely technical guide I found it difficult to use.For example the colour coding for regions looks good but is not much help in reaching the destinations. Simple numbering of walks would suffice with distances from nearest resort towns. The walk maps are of limited use because the detailed information is on other pages. During walks this makes it too difficult to use. I have done 4 walks in different areas to date. I resolved this problem by hand drawing maps with notes and arrows where applicable. Also I added additional comments like "uphill" or "rough track". The photos in the book have no descriptions and you cannot see where they were taken. The numbers in the text do not relate to the maps. Note that times given are for a very fit person with few stops. I needed to add up to an hour extra in each walk. As a colourful brochure its fine, but it is a pity about its weak points because it is nicely produced and has a lot of information if you can find it.

The trails and route notes are easy to follow. Great guide! The author is happy to email you the GPS files upon request which are very useful.

This lovely book is a delight to read. The lack of words helps it to be a slightly different experience each time as my son and I discuss what is going on in the illustrations.

This book won the Caldecott and you don't need my review to convince you of its quality. What I can tell you is that I was completely intimidated by reading my three year old a wordless book. And I wasn't even sure if he'd like it, but he took to it immediately. We got it from the library and after we returned it he asked for it repeatedly so I bought it and I'm glad I did. He loves telling the story with me. I feel like there's even more we can do with it as he grows as a reader/writer. A wonderful addition to our library. P.S. Check out Matthew Cordell's Wish. We read Wish to our son on his birthday and on Mother's and Father's Day and cry every. single. time. It was the first book we ever read him; I'd packed it in my hospital bag and everything. I love Cordell's illustrations. He has big fans in our family.

The pictures are so wonderful that the story can just tell itself. I can ask my 3 year old what's happening and she can make up her own version, which is awesome! It supports her imagination and story telling. She justs sits and thumbs through the pages, howling and barking :)

I gave this to my daughter on her fourth birthday, as she likes to 'read' books to us now. The limited number of words makes this possible and I fell in love with the artistry and simplicity of the pictures. The first time we read the book, she buried her head in me and wept when the child did in the story saying, "It's just so sad, Mama!" (Be aware for super sensitive kids.) BUT, that didn't stop her from immediately reading it again with her big sister, or wanting to act out the story moments later, pretending to be a baby wolf herself. It's become a favorite in our rotation of kids' stories.

Best picture book I've ever come across.

What a lovely book! I can only imagine reading this with a toddler, or other small child. No words, none needed. You will engage with the story and kid, making for a perfect experience.

This is a wonderful book. The illustrations are so expressive and really tell the story well. Well worth the price.
