This was precisely what I was looking for. Densely packed with good information for people wanting a technical treatment of light and color in the outdoors. Worth every penny and then some.This book is filled with drawings and black an white photos illustrating every kind of shadow, light, moonlight, reflected light in all manner of situations. There is a large full color section in the center of the book as well. Some of the pictures are not entirely clear, in some respects due to the desaturation, but not enough to detract from the quality.This is more of a technical kind of book if you want to do a really in depth study of light and shadow.

This is a physics book with quite a few formulas, hand drawn figures, and graphs, but even if you can't understand them, you will learn a lot from the text. It was first published in 1974 and represents a lifetime of work. Even if you only get through the first chapter, you will learn a lot.

All pilots, photographers, landscape artists, astronomers, hikers, farmers, weather buffs, etc. should read this classic book.The updated illustrations are very nice.

Prior to reading this book, communicating a love of and appreciation for the outdoor experience of natural phenomena was often frustrating. This book has provided me with a new lexicon that helps me bridge the gap between intuition and the elementary physics of the first-hand viewing perspective. At times there are sections that are a bit of a slog (e.g. the revelation of the nuances of viewing a scene through pane vs. plate glass) but that criticism is more than balanced by many excellent observations and curious examinations of the changing relationships between the observer and the scene viewed. After reading this book, I have embarked on reviewing many of the photos that I have taken in my travels. I have been astonished by the number details that had escaped me (and for which I had zero appreciation) prior to reading Minnaert's book. One of the techniques I have used extensively is viewing inverted digital photographs of panoramic scenes reflected in water using image editing software. The fact that the reflected scene is viewed from the perspective of an underwater observer (buy the book for a full explanation) is a relevation that provided me with some good natured fun at the expense of disorienting a friend when I inverted a photograph of lake scene from a hiking (or SCUBA diving?) trip to Alaska.

This deeply perceptive book changes our own perceptions of all kinds of light and color events in the outdoors. You will never see the same way again outdoors. Some examples involve elementary optics (which explain the visual phenomena) but nearly all the 278 short chapters can be appreciated by the visually alert reader. My favorite examples include dappled light, rainbows (there are always two), and differences between relected and transmitted light in seeing leaves and grass. The Dover edition is fine; the Springer-Verlag edition is better with its excellent color photographs.

Excellent book, however, I have just discovered that there is missing information on page 203 regarding reflected rainbows. There is an incomplete sentence at the end of the page.

I like DK books because the photos are so good, and the kids will not grow out of the books because of that & adults can enjoy them because of that. The photos make it a primary source & there is room for the kids & adults to arrive at one's own conclusions and imagine the past more clearly without having to go to any museum (or go to one, after being inspired). I bought this particular book, Mesopotamia, because my 6th grader son had a social studies project to do on Mesopotamia. The book supplemented his textbook well, and illustrated certain aspects of their civilization better. It puts together well the various civilizations existed in the area & clarifies how things evolved & how people lived.

This book was an excellent introduction to ancient history for my 7 year old. We hung the poster in his bedroom and read 4-6 pages every so often before bed. I explained the DK Eyewitness format to him as a "museum in a book." By the time we finished reading, he was familiar with the general outline of 3000 years of history for the region and was making paper Hittite hats. I'm glad these original hardcover versions are still around- the CD is nice and the poster is priceless.

It is really not a book, but an illustrated presentation of Mesopotamia from the beginning (9000 BCE?) to about 1300 BC, which was the time Mesopotamia flourished . The chosen figures are outstanding and they illustrate Mesopotamia better than many words. The format is no good for serious students, but this is a very, very good rendition and for what is worth it is five stars. I never regretted reading it.

Outstanding, easy-to-read, chock full of illustrations overview on Mesopotamia. First rate historical. The enclosed CD is pretty good too.

We will use this as a teaching resource. The images and the facts are all great.

As usual DK books knocks your socks off with rich information and magnificent illustrations. They know how to tell a story, they've been doing it a long time. I got this as a Gift for my Autistic son. He adored it !!

I would have liked there to be a section on people looking at "cloud shapes". Otherwise it was a useful resource to add to a book we were using in my classroom on clouds, which was actually fiction. I'm glad I bought it. It's not overly scientific.

This is an excellent science book to be used in learning about weather and clouds. Children enjoy the story and the pictures.

My fault- I thought this would show actual cloud pictures with a description and education on that particular cloud type, but it is a cartoon book for children. There are no pictures of real clouds- just cartoon drawings and how to make a cloud using ice or something. I wanted this for my granny who wants to learn about clouds.

Good book to teach students about the different types of clouds

This book is great for lower elementary classes! I used it for a first grade class and it was simple enough for them to follow along and reviewed all of the types of clouds. This one is a keeper for sure!

I listened to this tape while lulling off to sleep for a week. I didn't notice any earth shattering weight loss. Not even one pound.

I am so mad that I cannot return this item...I am pretty sure I listened to a sample of it to make sure I was cool with the voice as I was under the impression it was audio....it is hypnosis....sadly, somehow I ended up with a book that you read about self-hypnosis....not at all what I was looking for and no option to return it....very disappointed

Bob Garrett is a Visiting Scholar at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He was Professor of Psychology at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, and held several positions there, including Chairperson of the Department of Psychology, Faculty Development Coordinator, and Interim Dean of Academic Affairs. He received his BA from the University of Texas at Arlington and his MA and PhD from Baylor University. He received further training in the Department of Physiology at Baylor University College of Medicine and at the Aeromedical Research Primate Laboratory, Holloman Air Force Base. Bob lives on a 3,200-acre ranch he shares with 47 other families in the hills outside San Luis Obispo. His two sons and three beautiful grandchildren all live nearby.

I bought this book for a college student as a reference book to a college course she is taking. I did a quick read on it and it's well written with appropriate diagrams. It is focused on the structure of neurons and nerve centers that control and initiate human behavior. Reader probably needs to have some understanding of elementary neurotransmitters and hoe they interact at the nerve synapses.

Arrived pretty beat up. I do not want to be charged for it so I was worried but other than that it will serve its purpose which is to read the info.

This is written so poorly and dry. I hated reading it and threw it in the box when I shipped it back. Terrible!

really detail and deeply book that explain all neuronal process into the brain , strongly I recommend it

The kindle version is a mess! It won't let you and paste, enlarge the photos, and font changes make it impossible to follow the page numerology. Terrible textbook to have electronically!

The textbook is very well organized and put together. The images are well-chosen and are quite supplemental to the text. The text is quite simple to understand and the extra study questions have been very helpful for class. For someone who is not going to become a neurologist and merely wants to dabble in the subject, this book has been endlessly fascinating.

Needed for a class. Cood condition as described.
