Dead And Gone: A Sookie Stackhouse Novel (Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood), by Charlaine Harris

From Publishers Weekly

Telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse braces herself for trouble when another group of supernatural beings goes public in her disjointed [ninth] adventure (after 2008's From Dead to Worse). Following the vampires' lead, the shape-shifters decide to step out of the woodwork and announce their existence to the world. While the initial reveal goes smoothly, the brutal crucifixion of a young werepanther behind the local bar makes Sookie wonder if the people of Bon Temps, La., are as tolerant as she thought. Meanwhile, the FBI is asking questions about Sookie's uncanny ability to locate survivors after an explosion, and trouble is brewing among the secretive fae. Harris tries to cram too much into a single story, and even die-hard fans of Sookie's adventures in print and on HBO's True Blood will complain about the plot gaps. From Booklist

The Louisiana town of Bon Temps—along with the rest of the world—is about to be rocked with some big supernatural news: like the vampires before them, the Were people—humans with the ability to change into animals—are about to reveal themselves to humanity. Psychic barmaid Sookie Stackhouse is apprehensive about the revelation, given the way some people in the small town revile anyone with extraordinary powers, including Sookie herself. While the initial announcement seems to go over smoothly with most people, tragedy strikes when Sookie’s brother Jason’s estranged wife, a werepanther, is found murdered and nailed up on a cross. Jason is the prime suspect, but Sookie has even bigger problems to deal with when she learns that a vicious fairy prince is determined to kill her. Darker and more ominous than earlier entries in the series, Harris’ latest raises the stakes (pun intended) for lovable heroine Sookie and comes up a winner. With HBO’s True Blood, a series based on Sookie’s adventures, renewed for a second season, expect demand for this latest gripping installment. --Kristine Huntley

Set approximately three months after the tumultuous events of the previous entry in her Sookie Stackhouse series (2008's From Dead to Worse), author Charlaine Harris' latest release, Dead and Gone, takes off full-speed ahead and never once slows down. Therein lies a very big problem with this book, though...Unfortunately for the fans of Ms. Harris' usually-compelling series, the result of all her labor last year is just a crazy quilt of frenetic events, as heroine Sookie races from trying to put out one metaphorical fire here to saving someone else's skin (or, heaven help her, her own skin, AGAIN) from another harrowing situation there. The poor girl never gets a chance to stop and catch her breath or regain her equilibrium, and as a result, the entire story shows her behaving in very un-Sookie-like ways (almost as if she's taken way too much cold medicine and is trying desperately--but failing-- to act "normal"). Her interactions with her current boyfriend (Eric the vampire) are notably odd. Her responses to the many deaths that occur are strangely remote. She is disconnected. She isn't amused, nor (sadly) is she amusing. Actually, Sookie isn't even particularly likable here (for the first time in the series!). In short, Sookie is off-kilter in this book, and the reader is left that way, as well.As difficult as it is to keep up with the hyper pace, Ms. Harris does manage to keep the reader engaged, albeit unsettled. Definitely the most grim and gruesome entry in the series to date, DAG offers up numerous, gratuitously-graphic deaths and horrific surprises (shocks), while also attempting to address long-standing relationship issues. Many fans will be gratified that Ms. Harris continues to show parallels between her fictionalized world and the real one, by spotlighting the harmful effects of prejudice toward persons of different races and sexual orientations. (The fact that she makes her points with a sword rather than a paring knife, figuratively speaking, is rather disturbing, however. Like so many other aspects of this book, such scenes are just uncomfortably over-the-top.)Yet another problem is Ms. Harris' decision to go out of her way to include several auxiliary characters, no doubt to appease readers who have expressed sadness over certain characters' absence in recent books. Most of these characters are relegated to mere cameo appearances, though, so fans will likely be left rather unsatisfied in that regard; the book, meanwhile, is left with quite a lot of clutter.Despite Ms. Harris' attempts, there is just WAY too much going on in DAG for one normal-length book, and the reader is left feeling nearly as spent and exhausted upon completing it as poor Sookie is. Hopefully after this aberration (at least, what I can only HOPE is an aberration, and not a harbinger of her future books), Ms. Harris will sit herself down in a nice comfy easy chair, with a big glass of sweet tea by her side, to peacefully contemplate an easier, more pleasant adventure for her heroine's next appearance on the bookshelves. Sookie and company--as well as the readers--deserve it.

I first heard of this series because of True Blood. Yeah, I'm one of those that got late in the game LOL. At the time I hadn't started my obsession with UF and PNR so it was quite understandable that a couch potato like me learned of the TV show before finding out there was a book series behind it.After I got addicted to reading everything paranormal, this series kept popping into my radar. I had already seen the show and loved it, because of that I was reluctant to read it. That doesn't make any sense? I'll explain. I HATE reading a book that has become as series/movie after I have already watched the series/movie.An example was the Dresden File series by Jim Butcher. I had seen some of the TV show's episodes and therefore felt tainted when I started reading book one. It took me forever to finish it, but by the end I got really into it. I feel that I need a blank slate when reading a book series and not being influenced by the TV or the movies.I finally gave in and bought a box with books 1-8 and even after that it took me a while to start it. I did and I have to say I was done for after that. Book one was a bit shaky, because of the damn comparison with the TV show that kept going through my mind, but after that? Damn, I was in love! I read the 9 Books out so far in a week and I want more and more...The Sookie Stackhouse series is not deep and does not try to be something that it isn't. It's a fun series, with interesting characters that live in a world like our own, but where Vampires are not only real, but have just "come out of the coffin".The Sookie in the book is so much better than the TV one. She is strong, loyal, fun, interesting and you can't help but love her and feel for her. She is just great. I loved her sense of humor and her loyalty to her friends. I loved that she sticks up for herself even to powerful vamps that would leave anyone else trembling.A lot goes on from Book 1 until the latest installment and I don't want to spoil anything, but I have to say that all the books so far are fast paced, fun and full of adventure. There are tons of secondary characters that make the world Sookie lives in very interesting and rich.In the romance department we have to deal with Bill, Sam, Eric and more... Personally I LOVE Eric and am definitely part of TEAM ERIC hehe. The sex scenes aren't up to erotic standards, but they are there and I have to say that at times, they were very steamy, specially where Eric was concerned ::fans self::Best Book so far: I have to say it was "Dead to the World" (Book 4) - A lot of a Eric and a lot of fun =)Most Difficult Book to read: "Dead and Gone" (Book 8) - A lot happens in this book and it has a lot of pain. Some people have told me they were very disappointed with it, I actually enjoyed this book a lot. But it was definitely a hard book, specially having to see Sookie suffer so much.Worst Book so far: "Touch of Dead" (Book 9 - Short Stories collection) - after finishing book 8 I went on the hunt for anything Sookie and was quite disappointed with this one. A couple stories were fun, but it was montly Blah! for me...All in all, I LOVED this series. Sookie is no Kate Daniels of Allie Beckstrom. She is not the kick-ass heroine we are used to seeing in Urban Fantasy books. However she does kick-ass in her own way, by being brave, fun and flawed. She is far from perfect and that makes her more real and even more lovable. She makes the wrong choices a lot of the time and can be so irritating, but you can't help but love her anyways.I recommend this series to any Paranormal fan out there. You won't be disappointed!Originally Posted at Welcome to Larissa's Bookish Life [...]

What is a "clean up" novel? It is my term for a novel in a series where the author realizes that they have added in too many supporting characters for the reader to keep track of, so they engage in a wholesale slaughter/removal of character who have lost their usefulness to the plot. I won't say who all get the axe in this book, but it is quite a few people.Other than clean-up, the main point of this novel seems to show that the weres come out into society. Okay, cool, nice beginning, BUT... after the first few chapters, not much attention is paid to how the world is taking the news, except for a few references to how family members are taking it.The attempt at the main plot seems to be a fairy war. However it is so rushed, I just couldn't bring myself to care. Now, I love the Sookie Stackhouse series, so diehard fans, please don't bash me. I'll still be reading them as they come out, as long as the plots stay intriguing. I seriously hope the next novel is better, or I will regretfully have to consign Sookie's stories to the catagory of "jumped the shark", joining the Anita Blake novels.

Cobain's life could make an episode of a bizarre and morbid Twilight Zone (or perhaps Night Gallery episode). A sad, talented at times pathetic human being with talent and great falws, Cobain was a bitter contradiction. Despite a his talent and success, he hated himself and his life. Cobain once commented on his "suicide genes" and, to be honest, it he had already written the last chapter in his life before it truly had a chance to begin. There's no doubt that Nirvana had as much impact as the Sex Pistols and The Beatles in terms of the music world. Cobain and the band popularized a sound and helped create a movement they didn't want to be a part of. As ground breaking as Nirvana's sound was, they never managed to move beyond it. The band's albums are representative of what was happening in Cobain's life; the anger and brutality (as well as sadness and compassion) that dominated Cobain's life ultimately helped end it as well. This book illustrates the rise and descent of a popular artist. The vivid picture that emerges is of someone on a roller coaster ride to hell. Despite all of that, there's also tenderness and virtue on display as well. Cobain was merely a man caught in the cross hair of public life who didn't want to be there. The portrait that emerges confirms Cobain as troubled individual that couldn't come to grips with the demons that drove his art. It's never better to burn out than fade away. Cobain chose the former without realizing the later is just as much myth. He never got a chance to come to grips with his demons and, ultimately, they tore him apart. This book is a snapshot of an artist as he tries to find ways to burn out faster than anyone before.

Charles Cross published this book in 2001 and has never amended or updated it. Much of what is in here has been publicly questioned or straight-up disproved. This book needs to either be updated or removed from publication. Leaving it in circulation is disrespectful at the very least--and borderline slanderous at the worst. It saddens me to think that this is what young people believe Kurt Cobain was like. The most egregious lies come from Courtney Love. Her account of Kurt's lost days after his final "escape" is contradicted, on tape, by recordings Tom Grant keeps posted on his site. Courtney knew Kurt's whereabouts when he was in Los Angeles, even though she claims in the book that she did not. She also admitted to Tom Grant that she staged a fake overdose during her "hotel detox" on the day before Kurt's body was found. Her account of how and when she met Kurt has been debunked on the record by friends and journalists who were there at their first meeting. (It would belabor the point to provide more examples.). Regardless of why you think she might have done it, it's clear that Courtney has deliberately misled journalists, the public, and law enforcement on the subject of her late husband. If Charles Cross had any integrity, he would question her reliability as a source now--if he didn't when he wrote this. Moreover, this entire book reads like a loaded thesis on the subject of why Kurt Cobain committed suicide. Cross loads the deck almost from the first sentence, framing the entire narrative with a sense of the inevitable that would have made a diehard fatalist like Thomas Hardy feel the need for a little levity. No doubt Kurt was a sensitive boy whose broken home left terrible scars that he explored in his music. But Kurt was more than the sum of his miseries: his sense of humor--juvenile and sarcastic but also surreal and uplifting--was part of what made Nirvana unique. You can hear the goofball humor that comes from small-town boredom in Kurt's interviews if you listen to him talk or watch him and Krist misbehave on camera. Charles Cross never once asks what may be the most important question a rock biographer should ask: what was it about this person that all these people loved so much? One answer I can give, from experience, was that we felt like he was one of us. I can't speak for everyone, but my friends and I loved him for the weird little in-jokes built into Nirvana's gnomic public appearances. Kurt was winking at us--sometimes very, VERY broadly. Cross ignores this aspect of Kurt's personality entirely, and the result is a sadly one-dimensional portrait of a person who was much more complex than this book indicates. (This narrative also absolutely serves the theory that Kurt could not have died any other was besides suicide, but I leave it up to the reader to decide whether she or he wants to explore other theories on that subject.)Finally, there's the writing itself. So much of what is in this book is blatantly unsupported. It's terrible, lazy writing. There's the infamous last chapter, but there are plenty of other examples. Who says Buzz Osbourne was a tyrant? Who outlined the "rules" or "laws" of punk rock that Cross refers to several times in the book? (I'm a cranky old punk, and I don't buy all of them). Where did stuff like this come from? All this subjective stuff is so weird. But the worst, really, is the way that Cross jumps into Kurt's head at the beginning of the book, and doesn't get out. It's presumptious at the least, and dishonest at the worst. If you read this book, please read some other books about Kurt and Seattle in the 90s, too. Please read Tom Grant's most recent book. Please read a good oral history of Sub Pop records. Please spend some time learning about more than just Kurt, because there's more to this story than this.

Reads like a mediocre rock magazine. Lots of purple prose and cliches. If you're looking for a work of scholarship on Cobain this is not the place to go.

I've tried to finish reading this book several times (thru the library). but I moved to a tiny town that doesn't have this book! what?! so, I decided it was time to add it to my book collection. why I haven't just done this, I have no idea. I purchased it used. it is in good condition, well read. it came in the mail quickly, faster than I expected. and I have finally finished it and placed it in my bookcase.

Wow!!! What a read... In so many ways. I noticed a few negative reviews in regard to fact versus fiction. I am not well versed in Kurt Cobain's life and some of the finer details. This being my first introduction into his life. So taking it at face value, I thought this was a fantastic biography... Difficult reading at times, tragic, heart-breaking, hard to understand. Which is why I love Biography/Autobiography & Memoir - causing you to probe much deeper than the surface. Kurt Cobain is a tragic hero/villain story, intertwined with enough conflict and turmoil that can feel like our own. I was saddened by this story, his story... But this is life... those that live it hard and swift, as Kurt Cobain did, usually exit far to early. A complex and harrowing study of the human condition, and the dilapidated effect of self-hatred...

Review

“The Estrogen Window offers an easy-to-read explanation that removes the confusion regarding how to safely take estrogen. Once women realize they have an estrogen window, they can take back control of their lives.”—Sara Gottfried, MD, author of New York Times bestselling books The Hormone Reset Diet and The Hormone Cure“Dr. Seibel’s meticulous review of the most recent scientific evidence about menopausal hormones will help the reader think about the extra benefits that result from taking estrogen in the right way and at the right time. Clearly presented, this book shows that estrogen therapy improves quality of life including workability, prevents disease, and can be life-saving.”—Philip M. Sarrel, MD, professor emeritus of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences and professor emeritus of psychiatry, Yale University School of Medicine“I couldn’t put this book down! I have been longing for a doctor to write a book that will help women clearly understand the benefits of estrogen, when to use it, and how. Most women are still basing their health care on fear instead of facts. Dr. Seibel walks us through the impact of estrogen on our breasts, heart, brain, bones, vagina, bladder, and skin! Thank you, Dr. Seibel, for giving us all the information, studies, and tools to help keep us healthy and happy through menopause and beyond.”—Ellen Dolgen, speaker, author, blogger, and health and wellness advocate; founder and president of Menopause Mondays at EllenDolgen.com“In his new book, The Estrogen Window, Mache Seibel, MD, has created a breakthrough guide to coach women through menopause. He clarifies how to manage menopause symptoms, balance the risks and benefits of hormone therapy and when might be the best time to consider treatment, and how to communicate effectively with your doctor. Highly recommended for anyone dealing with menopause issues.”—Steven Masley, MD, FAHA, FACN, FAAFP, CNS, bestselling author of Smart Fat and The 30-Day Heart Tune-Up and creator of top public television programs: 30 Days to a Younger Heart and Smart Fats to Outsmart Aging.“In The Estrogen Window, Dr. Mache Seibel tells us everything we need to know about one of the most frequently prescribed medications in America. The crucial message is one women have known for millennia: Timing is everything.”—Julie Holland, MD, author of Moody Bitches: The Truth About the Drugs You’re Taking, the Sleep You’re Missing, the Sex You’re Not Having, and What’s Really Making You Crazy“The Estrogen Window is a book very much needed among women today, many of whom suffer not only from the effects of their menopause, but even more from the effects of misinformation. Dr. Seibel has written a clear, concise, readable, and knowledgeable source of information. One that will be immediately valuable to the many women and their families who suffer from estrogen deprivation.”—Ricardo Azziz, MD, MPH; Regents’ professor, Georgia Regents University; former founding president, Georgia Regents University; former president, Georgia Health Sciences University; former founding CEO, Georgia Regents Health System

This book is confusing. What is confusing is the "window" the doctor writes about for women to take hormones. Second, the doctor writes mostly about taking NON-bioidential hormones, i.e., hormones like Premarin (which is animal abuse as to how it is produced, look it up.)I tried bioidentical hormones about 5 years ago in my 50s and never felt so bad -- I blew up like a balloon. I think I still had enough hormones in me that adding more was very problematic. I am 63 now and last year one day I woke up and felt "old." I had also gained belly fat which is typical in finally hitting menopause. I found a good (woman) doctor who put me back on bios -- estrogen patch, prometrium, compounded testosterone. I finally feel good again. The "window" in his book is about women UNDER 60 taking hormones and he alludes to how dangerous hormones are (causing cancer) for women over 60 and that they should only stay on hormones for 5 years. His recommendations would definitely NOT have worked for me in my 50s as he states in his book. My doctor has a patient WHO IS 86 who takes bio-identical hormones with no problems.I would NOT recommend this book over books written by Dr. Elizabeth Lee Vliet or the book, The Perimenopause & Menopause Workbook. Vliet's books make the most sense to me. I DO NOT suggest taking this doctor's advice.UPDATE: I MESSAGED THIS DOCTOR ON FACEBOOK AS TO MY CONCERNS ABOUT HIS BOOK AND HE NEVER RESPONDED!

This book was so very helpful when making my decision whether to take hormone replacement therapy. It also gave me the tools I needed to talk to my health care provider about it as well as inform my friends the truth about HRT.

I love this book because of the new, pertinent information that I learned. Dr. Seibel presents updated research that my own doctor wasn't aware of. In fact, my doctor referred me out because she said, "I know nothing about menopause!" I, myself, missed the "estrogen window" so I had to come off of oral medication. Don't miss out! This book is for those women who want to know how to best care for themselves before, during and after menopause. Dr. Seibel is the Estrogen guru! : )

If you’re afraid or confused about estrogen and whether bioidentical hormones are safe to take, you’re not alone! There are constantly reports about hormone replacement therapy causing all kinds of issues with a woman’s health like increasing the chances of breast cancer and heart disease. When do you start them? How long can you take them?I first read this book when it was named The Estrogen Window. In this first of its kind books, Harvard faculty member and international menopause expert Dr. Mache Seibel explains in easy to understand language how there is an estrogen window of opportunity to take hormones. Begin treatment in your estrogen window and estrogen can lower your risk of breast cancer, heart disease, dementia and more. But once the estrogen window closes, the reverse can be true. The Estrogen Fix is recommended by the North American Menopause Society not only for every woman in and around menopause, but also for their doctors.

The book was well written and easy to understand. I purchased and read the book after listening to Dr. Siebel on satellite radio. I am very interested in figuring out what will be best for me in terms of hormone replacement and this book addresses many questions. I plan to follow up with my doctor as well as possibly visiting Dr. Siebel for an office visit. He is the first physician that I’ve come in contact with who has a true opinion about HRT based on facts.

Dr. Mache Seibel is a gift to women. His book and work in this world is incredible and so needed, as there is tremendous confusion around hormones, menopause, autoimmune disease and more. The Estrogen Fix is filled with information that makes sense and is backed by science and Dr. Mache Seibels decades of experience and work in this field.

Passionate, informed, and science-driven. As a nutritionist, I agree with Dr. Siebel that the decision to use hormones could be the most important mid-life medical decision a woman makes to save her later from breast cancer, heart disease, and dimentia. Please read BEFORE you go through menopause so you can make an educated decision for yourself. Thanks for your heartfelt, excellent work, Dr. S. - Christa Orecchio, Clinical and Holistic Nutritionist, thewholejourney.com

In this easy to read book, Dr. Seibel clears the mystery regarding estrogen and why and how it can be right for women. This confusing topic is made simpler and provides women with the right questions to ask their doctors. It is a must read for any woman grappling with this issue.

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Readers with an eye on European politics will recognize Ali as the Somali-born member of the Dutch parliament who faced death threats after collaborating on a film about domestic violence against Muslim women with controversial director Theo van Gogh (who was himself assassinated). Even before then, her attacks on Islamic culture as "brutal, bigoted, [and] fixated on controlling women" had generated much controversy. In this suspenseful account of her life and her internal struggle with her Muslim faith, she discusses how these views were shaped by her experiences amid the political chaos of Somalia and other African nations, where she was subjected to genital mutilation and later forced into an unwanted marriage. While in transit to her husband in Canada, she decided to seek asylum in the Netherlands, where she marveled at the polite policemen and government bureaucrats. Ali is up-front about having lied about her background in order to obtain her citizenship, which led to further controversy in early 2006, when an immigration official sought to deport her and triggered the collapse of the Dutch coalition government. Apart from feelings of guilt over van Gogh's death, her voice is forceful and unbowed—like Irshad Manji, she delivers a powerful feminist critique of Islam informed by a genuine understanding of the religion. 8-page photo insert. From Bookmarks Magazine

Although Ayaan Hirsi Ali remains Public Enemy #1 for radical Muslims, she refuses to be silenced. In this captivating memoir—an act of courage itself—she shares the evolution of her values, beliefs, and identity, all propelled by an urgent mission to educate Western countries about the bigotries of other nations. Set against a terrifying geopolitical landscape of African wars and Muslim fundamentalism, Hirsi Ali addresses timely topics: the plight of refugees and women; the Muslim clan system; forced marriage; political asylum; and, perhaps most significantly, her own personal religious crisis. Written in descriptive, clear prose, Infidel, with its radical feminist criticism of Islam, offers a disturbing view of the modern world—and inspired every critic who read it. Riveting is one word I would use to describe Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s book, Infidel. Her story is one of defiance and great courage. You will see Islam through her eyes and feel her fear, and anger. You will be impressed with the courage that it took this young twenty-two year old girl to reject a marriage she did not want and to escape to a culture that she had been taught to detest. You will see how gradually the light was turned on and she began to see the falseness of all she had been taught. You will cheer her fight to bring awareness to the plight of Muslim women and girls who are basically slaves to an ideology that denies their personhood. Fathers, brothers, and other male relatives have totally control over their lives. Ayaan risk her life to tell the truth about the abominable treatment of Muslim women, not only in the Arab countries but also how they are importing their beliefs to European countries. She has been under the threat of death from Muslim clerics, has had to go into hiding, and has stood and faced it all with dignity. No book will make you more thankful to have been born in America than the book Infidel. It is a must read.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali has experienced, unenviably, three of history’s major tyrannical political movements: Marxist state socialism, welfare-state socialism, and, most toxic, Islam.Depending on the estimate, somewhere between 60 million and 200 million political murders later, Marxism, and its offshoot, fascism, only require explanation for the terminally ignorant. Her experience of welfare-state socialism included a serious effort to revoke her dutch citizenship by a senior member of the dutch nomenclatura, and thereby her seat in the dutch parliament, at least in part because her criticisms of female slavery, genital mutilation, honor killings, and so on, occurring in the Netherlands, tolerated by the dutch in the name of multiculturalism, couldn’t easily be dismissed as ‘right-wing racism,’ or as ‘islamophobia,’ given that she’s black from Somalia and a former muslim under threat of death for criticisms of Islam. The death threat was pinned with a knife to the murdered corpse of the dutch film-maker, Theo van Gogh, who produced a short film criticizing islamic treatment of women for Ms. Ali.As for Islam, and this book, per Ms. Ali, “The message of this book, if it must have a message, is that we in the West would be wrong to prolong the pain of that transition unnecessarily, by elevating cultures full of bigotry and hatred toward women to the stature of respectable alternative ways of life.”I recommend the book club suggestions at the end of the Kindle Edition of the book also.

This is a must read for anyone willing to approach the subject of Muslim women's rights with an open mind. Ali delivers a critique of Islam from a former insider's point of view pointing out habits and customs that should be banned all over the world. She decries the liberal West's penchant for turning a blind eye to the abject misery, suffering and physical abuse of women.

Infidel was on my shelf for a long time and I finally got to it. It was an excellent, well written personal account of Ali's journey of such a conservation perspective of Islam and her journey of escaping consistent mental and physical abuse from her mother (if we can call her that) and the constant reminders of how Islam should be applied through their eyes. Ali provides historical backgrounds that allow you to understand the mentality of whom she was frequently around in Africa. Her journey to escape the customs and norms is admirable and inspiring to find the courage to criticize such a debated topic and religion. I would highly recommend this book to everyone as it will either open up your eyes to such tribal cultures or confirm some of your thoughts. Either way, this book certainly creates discussion and while you discuss this re-read her first chapter. It is her personal account. Whatever thoughts you may have about her demonizing the religion doesn't negate her personal experience. Highly recommended!

A difficult book to read and significantly more difficult to review. The difficult part of reading and reviewing was the struggle to suppress my own emotions. The writer’s attempt to reveal the mistreatment of Muslim women in particular is noble. Her life story is one of many emotions, trials and tribulations and the efforts on her part to seek equality on behalf of others reveals a great mind in a great person. It should be fair to say there are many more like her stymied by their religion and background and yet of equal mind if not courage. I say this because no single ethnic group or religious sect has a monopoly on brains regardless of gender. Many people are simply what they are taught to be. To avoid offending anyone I seldom discuss or give thoughts on religion. I am not knowledgeable enough to discuss the various aspects of the various religions but like many (I suspect) I entertain my own thoughts and opinions. While this book taught me some about the particular religion involved it made light of the brutality of life for women living under the justification by that particular religion. I despise anyone involved in the mistreatment of women. Certainly in my life I have known bar flies who maybe rated a dope slap but the constant abuse and mistreatment of any woman rates as a punishable sin. I cannot always say they are the “fairer sex” unless by fairness one means their attitude and treatment of others, male or female. I have known, worked with, and worked for some women who I am proud and privileged to have known, worked for and worked with. Ayaan Hirsi Ali is someone I would consider an honor to know.

I ended up DNFing this book at about 82%, so I feel like I know what it was that I did not like about this book and I feel confident in my rating. The synopsis of this book says that it is “reimagined through a searing feminist lens” and I do not agree with that at all. To me when a book says that it is a feminist retelling, I think that it is going to have female characters that stand up for themselves and fight for equality, but in the 254 pages that I read of this book, not once did our main character stand up for anything. Sure, the inequality that women in this society is mentioned and observed, but for me that was just not enough. Some things that I absolutely hated about this book:Wow your so pretty I can’t stand it, let me just constantly talk about and mention how beautiful the MC isMC knows another character wants to sexually assault another character, and lets it happen. That is NOT feminist to me.MC’s father says she is so pretty he should’ve taken her as his own. HER FATHER WANTS HER.MC was super judgemental (the first time she sees a fat woman, she says “I did not know such a body was even allowed to exist”She thinks it is completely out of the question/impossible that one of her sisters is not straightLots of girl hate, especially between the sisters.Did I mention how pretty she is?All men are sexual predators and misogynistic, felt like it was just trying to push the feminist agenda. Not all men are sexual predators or stupid.Sea Witch was far more interesting than the MC, actually stood up for herselfOne dimensional characters, very little character developmentMC is abused every night by her betrothed and then it is never fully addressedAnd seriously, the MC is sooooo pretty no one can believe that she is realI have no idea if the ending gets any better, but from what I read I really didn’t like how the book just pointed out issues instead of actually addressing them or anyone trying to make a difference. The world building is also really lacking, when we get to land it mentions a civil war on the islands, but we have no clue what country we are in and what the islands are. It wasn’t until I went and read the Goodreads synopsis that I realized it’s supposed to be set in Ireland, which definitely does NOT come through in any of the settings or characters. The writing in this was also a really big problem for me, it felt like the publisher didn’t realize that the author was only submitting a first draft and decided to publish it right away. There were paragraphs where there would be a scene with the Sea King, and then the very next paragraph would be something completely different with nothing to tell you what is going on and how you got from there to here.I get that this was trying to be a feminist commentary on the world, but it didn’t quite accomplish that. It never tried to offer solutions or even give any sort of analysis on why this world is the way it is. It almost read like the main message was that men are all evil, misogynistic, abusive monsters and women need to stay away from them.I could honestly go on and on about the things that I disliked about this book, but since I don’t want to write a book length review, I’m going to stop it here. This book was really disappointing for me and I honestly do not recommend this book.

Content Warning: Rape, Sexual Content, Language, Violence, and Female OppressionI really wanted to love this one. I was promised a feminist re-imagining of The Little Mermaid, and I honestly didn't feel like I got that. Literally the last chapter was the only place that that message came out strongly (and a teeny, tiny bit with Oliver's mother), and I kept reading, waiting for the story to get better and to show a more positive message, but it just never got there for me.As far as the retelling aspect of the story went, O'Neill stayed pretty true to both the feel of the tale and the major plot twists. Everything seemed to happen chronologically, as it did in the original faerie tale, and there was a lot of the original tale that was unchanged. But, she also added a really heavy hand to the feeling of the story, and the message that was portrayed throughout was very sad indeed. Gaia, her sisters, and all mermaids of the kingdom, were heavily oppressed by the Mer-men. Being only 15, Gaia was promised to be wed to a man almost as old as her father, who was already over 60 when he took her mother at age 16. There was a HEAVY theme of beauty being the only important aspect of the mermaids, and even when Gaia obtained her legs, the humans seemed to only focus on her beauty as well. Now, one would have thought that somewhere around the halfway point we would have gotten a message about how this oppression was wrong, and looks weren't everything, and that all men weren't shallow like they were in this story. We didn't. I continued to see themes like "boys will be boys," and "no girls allowed," with a focus on the importance of being beautiful.  This didn't feel feminist to me until the ending when Gaia finally decided that she gave up everything for a man (who was 6 years older than her by the way) who would never appreciate her. She finally decided to stand up to her father and take matters in to her own hand. She finally found that female empowerment to realize that the mermaids had been mistreated for far too long. But, this was only within the last 10 pages. Even with Gaia finding this female empowerment at the end, and having the story show how wrong and disgusting this female oppression was, the story didn't feel like it truly represented the feminist ideals of equality. There was not a single decent male portrayed in the story, and even the Rusalkas targeted all men instead of just picking and choosing the sinners. I did enjoy the last chapter. I was proud of Gaia for finding her power and her voice. I enjoyed the addition of the Rusalkas, and their folklore, to the story. I even admired the descriptiveness of the world building, but I just couldn't love a story that felt like it was written for the younger end of YA and yet still contained such a poor message, and still managed to throw in the f-bomb in awkward places, as well as an awkward scene of masturbation brought on by a drunken kiss. The only other positive thing I could point out for this tale would be that it taught a few lessons, just like most original faerie tales intended to do. It showed the importance of feminism. It showed the importance of believing in yourself and your inner and outer beauty. It showed how wrong oppression and prejudice are, and it taught the importance of getting to know someone before letting yourself "fall in love."Â

I love fairy tales. I love fairy tale retellings. This cover is absolutely gorgeous and I haven't read many Little Mermaid retellings so I knew I had to pick this one up. But I wasn't thrilled. It'sa re-imagining of Hans Christian Anderson's tale but it includes subtle details that allude to Disney's version, which I feel wasn't needed. There were some parts that worked for me but a lot that didn't. I felt the style of writing was in conflict with some of the language used. It didn't work together. I enjoyed the main character's character development. I enjoyed the angle the writer choose but I didn't love the writing. The ending was worth it but getting there took too much of my time.
