Review

“He’s no mere tourist but a man who’s made a deep personal commitment to the land from which his forebears came and who has a sensitive, nuanced understanding of the place and its people…It’s a lovely book.” - Jonathan Yardley, Washington Post“[Lynch] draws an enticing picture of his home away from home: the dreamlike environs of Moveen, County Clare.” - Joseph O’Neill, New York Times Book Review“Those of us with Irish ancestry will find this an appealing account of family, faith, destiny, and why so many Americans wish they were Irish, too.” - Dan R. Barber, Dallas Morning News“A master of the contemplative amble…There is enough poetry in the writing of it, both in verse and in prose, that a reader cannot come away from it without knowing what Lynch is about…Hearing Lynch’s story…one can gain wisdom for one’s own journey, Irish or not.” - Marta Salij, Detroit Free Press“In Booking Passage, Thomas Lynch’s ‘romance with words,’ realized as an altar boy responding in Latin, becomes a full-blown love affair in his prose about Ireland and fellow poets and what he thinks of the Church. His style has energy that takes my breath away it’s so fresh and unexpected.” - Elmore Leonard“Thomas Lynch is one of our indispensable essayists, a master of skeptical realism and tragicomic relief. The true subject of this generous, rowdy book is Lynch’s own wonderful mind, as it bobs and weaves, making connections between the personal and the tribal, history and the present moment, in language that is gorgeous and consistently apt.” - Phillip Lopate, author of Getting Personal and Waterfront: A Journey Around Manhattan“Thomas Lynch is an original…If there were more Thomas Lynches in the world, it might be a little less full of hatred and have a little more room in it.” - George Bornstein, Times Literary Supplement“The best writing in the book evolves from the sound of voices, from memory crammed into voice…[Booking Passage] becomes a layered hymn of gratitude to having family left on the other side…Spectacular.” - James Liddy, Irish Times

Thomas Lynch is a man inebriated with words, "One could come and go, traveling light in the portable universe of words, counting on images for transport" (Lynch 2005:239). I've read this book wishing Lynch's passages about Ireland had been more lengthy and cohesive. "Booking Passage" is a cobbled-together plethora of piecemeal impressions, scattered ruminations mixed with the occasional narrative. The chapter "Death Comes for the Young Curate" contains Lynch's inimitable encounter with a priest on Iona's beach. Later, his spleen about a neighbor with the designer pooches and their infinitesimal waste is hilarious, as is his horror at the story of a man, being "taken short," is finally found, having died on an Irish pub's toilet: "Every time I read this I am chilled. Killed in a loo in Killaloe - Bejaysus if it doesn't prove Himself is an almighty joker after all" (2005:227).Lynch is best describing his heritage and narrating actual events. Canny old Nora Lynch wisely used this well-off American cousin, and in return Lynch earned his Irish stripes. He talks of being broke, yet traveling through Europe; truly broke folks don't get to rent a car, drive to Milan, fly to London, then Detroit, moving "rapidly between the worlds" (242). Lynch is tone-deaf to physical and spiritual realities around him, true of many Boomers of his economic niche, too detached from what is truly uncomfortable. "Strangeness and distance made every utterance precious" (259). To call Lynch's exploitation of being "Irish" and "Catholic" inauthentic is too easy. Lynch's tunnel vision is self-focused, his all-seeing eye blurrily fixated on himself. Something essential is missing, whether in Ireland or Michigan. One derives no real sense of the actual land and dirt of Ireland, the faces of his neighbors and relatives, the way they move, their life. You won't savor what the food tastes like, the smells, colors, sensations, touch, but there's a scattering of architectural descriptions. What you get is what people sound like, and of course they do sound interesting. "Everything is tributary, every image and experience capable of turning in on itself a hundred different ways" (270-271). As in navel gazing, Godhelpus. To Lynch, life is language: words, lyrics, strings of nouns and vowels, meanings imposed by playing with them and scattering them. Tossing `em up in the air to see what interesting wordy detritus results.Oddly, Lynch includes a poem about drifting like a snowdrift over his ex-wife, "O...O... O..." Over the top, typical boomer-style, pun intended. After his divorce, he rants about extreme feminism in witty manner, but he goes too far bemoaning equality and the abuse of women, as forced mutilation still occurs. His bits on 911 are dated and out of place, too self-conscious. The last chapter is one of the most self-indulgent, narcissistic exercises in the grandiosity of poets and poetry I've ever stumbled upon, worse than wading through a bog. The genuflecting name-dropping of famous poets, and the unfortunate actor, is beyond dull. And his pal Heffernan's poem with "gangs of rowdy robes of fur," and "where animals devoid of any anger/lifting up bits of landscape in their teeth" maddens (248). There's no notion of the country from Canada to the Rocky Mountain West, where grizzly bears roam and chomp up human-made road signs and the occasional human. Many of the book's poems read as head games, politics, boomer-theology, and melancholy narcissism. A wash of words is Lynch's medicine, all hollow sound, no depth, but clever turns of phrase recycled in articles and essays, betokening a shortage of creativity. Thus the ultimate flatness when the reader finally closes this unsatisfying book.Lynch's descriptions of his sisters and Irish women are a kick: "they are strikingly beautiful, immoveable, and possessed of powers we know nothing of . . . the source of all that is holy and hazardous . . . a matrilineage that finds its way back to the kitchen and cauldron in a boggy parish in the old country . . . devotees of the votive and vigil, rosary and novena, perpetual adorations, lives of the saints, imitations of Christ, statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Sacred Heart, Stations of the Cross, relics, waters, ribbons and badges, prayerbooks and scapulars - all of which makes them morally superior and spiritually dangerous" (209-210). Indeed.

Who doesn’t love the Irish? But there is so much more in Tom Lynch’s book of essays than Irish (and Irish poets!) A searing indictment of rationalizations about Catholic Church scandals, a wondrous sidestep into Taos, New Mexico, of all places (the burial of a beloved priest). And many mugs or glasses or steins of beer and ail and stout. Besides being a fine poet , Lynch is a touching essayist. And not to be left out. a mortician and proud of it!

- or choose to be when the beer is green for the day. Best if you are Catholic and know when to genuflect, but lyrically beautiful for anyone who loves words and appreciates artistry in writing.

This book read a bit like one of my favorite Irish authors, John McGahren, but also contemporary and American. It touched my soul. A rich and fortunate life thankfully shared. I bought an extra copy to share with my sister.

I read this as a library book -- and it was so deeply touching that I had to buy a copy for my home library. The writing is superb - as is the exploration of identities, place, and history. What makes a family? Where is home? And it includes a wonderful description of poetry: "If life is linear, our brief histories stretched between baptisms and burials, and the larger history tied to events that happen in a line: and then, and then, and then ... poetry is the thing that twists history and geography and memory free of such plodding." (p. 270) This book should appeal to those interested in Ireland and genealogy to be sure, but also to those simply drawn to a poetic voice.

I'd been waiting for what seemed like too long for a third book of stories from Thomas Lynch, but wondered if his Irish-based tales could possibility be as compelling as his earlier works, which were stories about life based on his career in dealing with the dead (in addition to being a writer, Lynch is an undertaker). But again, just as he used the funeral home as a backdrop for stories not about death but about life, Lynch uses Ireland, land of his ancestory and his frequent visits, as the canvas for telling poignant stories about life. Now I'll give friends copies of "Booking Passage" while i wait for a fourth book from Thomas Lynch.

Perhaps of most interest to those of Irish ancestry, the author exhibits humor and insight into the Irish - those who stayed and the offspring of those who emigrated. A very pleasant read.

Hilarious in parts, I found his diatribe on 9/11, the airport wait between flights, his "rise" to stardom etc. to be egotistical and boring. If he had stuck to Ireland, relatives there, the cottage there, his life in the States and the back and forth between the two, it would have made a better book. I loved it for the brogue and dialogue therein; reminded me of my father who spoke with a brogue imitating my grandparents from Roscommon but it does wander and that's a shame because he seems to have a niche with his close tie to Ireland that could be used again and again in more books perhaps.

This book changed my life. Honestly. After many years of suffering and therapy, I finally realized (by reading this book) that I might have ADHD. I was not your typical ADHD case - I am not hyperactive, and I managed to be a good student with a LOT of work. But when I read this book a lot of things began to make sense... After some months, I finally decided to seek professional help and now I'm in a much better place in my life - I have energy and motivation throughout the day; I can actually focus on my work for an hour straight (before, sometimes even 10 minutes seemed impossible!); my mind is much more in the present and thus calmer and less prone to depression. Sometimes I think that learning about ADHD was a miracle in my life. My therapist is so impressed that I'm now only having very sparse 'maintenance appointments'. So thank you, Sari Solden!

I've read almost every book out there on ADD to gain a better understanding of what not only I exist with but how to better cope. This book was by far the best! It should me a mandatory read for all women with ADD. The best part is that it's organized in a way that you can easily skim, pick and choose what you're interested in reading when without having to go in a logical chronological chapter order. Sari Solden hit this one out of the park and has been a god send in helping me both understand and accept that there's absolutely nothing wrong with ADD, it's just a different brain than the majority of the public. I've learned to use my ADD to my advantage despite still struggling in other areas (everyone has struggles, so what, mine are JUST different) and in gaining a better appreciation for that, I wouldn't trade my ADD brain in for a nonADD brain ever.

This book and all the crying I did reading it were instrumental in my healing from the damage of a late diagnosis.Straightforward, informative, and understanding, without wrapping female ADHD up in the flowery and quirky language we tend to see. You've got a problem, Sari Solden understands it intimately, and she's going to explain to you what's going on and help give you some of the tools to cope. From the relevant point-of-view of an adult woman, free from the misconceptions and stereotypes that virtually always accompany ADHD. This book is time well spent.

This book spoke directly to my soul. I found out I had ADHD at 28 years old, and my psychiatrist recommended this book among some others. Sari Solden is the only way to go, in my opinion, if you are a woman with ADD/ADHD. The other books I read were also helpful to an extent, but Solden really speaks to the way ADD can manifest itself differently in women than in men. Every single word I heard was like she was reading my own mind and heart down to every last detail. It was spooky. Made me cry at certain parts, and made feel relieved I'm not alone at others. I felt like I understood myself and the issues I've faced my whole life 1000% better after reading this.

Warning, this book will make your think deeply about processes and situations in your adult ADD life that may have baffled you, like they did me. I experienced a real grief process but also many AHA moments. Challenging to trace the ADD issues into all their manifestations. Enlightening and it offers hope and solutions (No quick fixes, no gimmicks) This is a book to cover not just household and project help, but insight into relationships and challenges as well. Money very well spent.

This is a useful, comprehensive book about what it is for an adult woman to live with attention deficit disorder, Much more than just a list of helpful hints for dealing with the disorder, the book offers a compassionate look at how it affects a woman's life. It touches on just about every aspect of life including jobs, education and relationships. It also has a broad appendix of resources. For anyone with attention deficit disorder or anyone who loves someone with the disorder, it is a complete education into what it is and how to deal with it.

I had known for a long time that I have ADHD, but never received proper treatment. Even after all the research I had done on my own, this book helped me to understand parts of me I could never figure out. This book also provides effective, non medicinal strategies and techniques for managing my ADHD. Also, I should mention that because of my ADHD I am not a reader. I bought the audio book and would listen to it in my car on my way to work. I had to re-listen to it a few times because of my tendency to "zone out", but I absolutely recommend the audio book over reading the book to anyone who struggles with reading like I do.

Welcome to the Orthodox Church: An Introduction to Eastern Christianity, by Frederica Mathewes-Green

Review

"In her own warm, engaging way, Frederica takes us on a journey that is strange and exotic for those previously unfamiliar, and a spiritual refuge and oasis for those who have embraced it. This just may be the Church you have been looking for and didn’t even know it existed." —John Maddex, CEO, Ancient Faith Ministries Welcome to the Orthodox Church--its history, theology, worship, spirituality, and daily life. This friendly guide provides a comprehensive introduction to Orthodoxy, but with a twist: readers learn by making a series of visits to a fictitious church, and get to know the faith as new Christians did for most of history, by immersion. Mathewes-Green provides commentary and explanations on everything from how to “venerate” an icon, to the Orthodox understanding of the atonement, to the Lenten significance of tofu. It’s the perfect book for inquirers and newcomers, but even readers who have been Orthodox all their lives say they learned things they never knew before. Enjoyable, easy-to-read, and leavened with humor, Welcome to the Orthodox Church is a gracious guide to the ancient faith of the Christian East.“How do you introduce (Eastern) Orthodoxy? Frederica Mathewes-Green suggests we treat it as a large, and much-loved, family house. She takes us round it, showing us all the rooms and what goes on in them. Her conversational style is completely accessible, but utterly honest; there is lots of information, and she deals directly with problems to be encountered. It feels a bit like Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. This is a wonderful book.” —The Very Revd Archpriest Andrew Louth, Professor Emeritus of Patristic and Byzantine Studies, Durham University, author of Introducing Eastern Orthodox Theology Frederica Mathewes-Green, author of Facing East: A Pilgrim’s Journey into the Mysteries of Orthodoxy, a past vice president of Feminists for Life of America, the best of National Public Radio’s commentators, and Khouria (priest’s wife, “mother”) of Holy Cross Orthodox Church in Baltimore, has written a new book about getting to know the Orthodox Church. In it she walks the reader through a semi-fictional, representative American parish of the Orthodox Church, stopping to chat along the way... Mathewes-Green is a good companion, colloquial and easy, clear even when she dives into knotty theological controversies. What other book will you read this year that gives a quick summary of the controversy over the double procession of the Holy Spirit? But one of the great things about Mathewes-Green’s writing is that, unlike so much from the C.S. Lewis school of Christianity, she does not live entirely in the world of arguments. She writes with “the mind in the heart,” as the Orthodox say. Christianity is not primarily a philosophy or assent to a set of propositions; it’s a way of life. Mathewes-Green never loses sight of that. Liturgy, the life of prayer, reflection, confession of sins, frank acknowledgement of the need for mercy, sacraments, hymns, Scripture, the 80-year-old woman who no longer stands during vespers, the tiny Ethiopian who removes his shoes to pray, the smell of incense, the burning of candles, vigilance against the Devil — these all come into play. Progress in religion is about the turning of the total self toward God, not another analogy proving that what Christians believe is reasonable. Herein lies the real pleasure of reading Mathewes-Green. This is religion for the whole person, mind in heart, heart in body, body and soul. There are deep veins of wisdom shot throughout: - “A sin we especially long to cast off might be held in place by a different sin, one that has to be removed first, even if we don’t grasp the connection and consider it less important.” - “I shouldn’t have to say this, but the evil one is really evil. Don’t picture him trying to tempt a fat lady into eating more chocolate.” - “Thinking and talking about God is not communion with God. Only prayer is prayer.” She quotes liberally from the dynamic liturgies that, with the icons, are the chief cultural glory of Orthodoxy: “Why, Judas, did you betray the Savior? Did he shut you out from the company of the disciples? Did he sit at table with the rest, but send you away? Did he wash the feet of others, but pass you by? How much kindness you have forgotten.” ...The reader gets what the book’s title promises. But the best reason to read this book is that the author is wise. Wisdom springs from deep roots within a well-ordered soul, and is quite different from the things we mistake it for: intelligence, charm, wit, sympathy, openness, or empathy. Wisdom is rare in public discourse; when you see it, you recognize it. —J. Mulrooney, New Oxford ReviewPlenty of books deal with Christian theology in weighty and abstruse ways, but precious few apply the theology so wholly to the everyday lived realities of life, and in such easily accessible prose, as does Welcome to the Orthodox Church. This book follows exactly Frederica Mathewes-Green's tried and true recipe, of lucid writing marked by a strong sense of humor, but never escaping from the deepest spiritual realities. Do take warning, though. If you do read this thoughtful and passionate book, you will run the risk of having to take the claims of Orthodox Christianity very seriously indeed. —Philip Jenkins  Every single Orthodox person knows that in order to become Orthodox, you don’t read about it. You live it. You attend the services, do the fasting, say the prayers and read the Bible. You accept the sacraments, venerate the icons, kneel in the prostrations and inhale the incense. Books and courses, as Frederica Mathewes-Green points out in her introduction to Welcome to the Orthodox Church teach you ABOUT the faith, but they can’t teach the faith itself, because it’s not “primarily a religious institution, but a spiritual path.” So if that’s the case, and she knows it, why would she write a book about it? It’s a very simple answer: this book is about as close as you can get to learning to be Orthodox while still being a book about the Orthodox Church. It’s meant for inquirers and those who aren’t Orthodox but are curious about those weird folk who process around their church in the middle of the night. Except that it’s a pretty good book for Orthodox people as well. ...Frederica writes in a conversational style that is relaxing, engaging and humorous, a style that teaches without lecturing. It really does feel like a prolonged, relaxed visit with a friend. I hadn’t realized just how engaging the book was until I was most of the way through it. I had set myself a limit of four chapters per day, so I could get the book read in a reasonable amount of time and still have time for other work. As it happened, I started Chapter 12 one morning, and after a while, wondered just how long it was going to be before I finished the day’s chapters – this was feeling awfully long and, honestly, a bit tedious. I turned the page, and realized that I had just finished Chapter 19. The book wasn’t tedious at all, not if I could become so engaged that I simply forgot about my four chapter limit, and did two days reading in one! The problem was that I’d had overdosed on information and needed to let it settle down in my head. I would recommend the same to other readers – don’t try to read too much at once, because you do need time to let the information you’ve read be absorbed and integrated in your mind, but do read the book. For long time Orthodox, much of the book won’t be news – it’s basic theology, history and information that we learn in the first few years, both by learning about the church and by living the faith. Yet Frederica has a way of explaining and describing that can shine a light on these well-known truths. She uses metaphors and comparisons that show us things from a new angle, that can help deepen our understanding of the services, the faith and our theology without ever lecturing, talking down to us or sounding as though she’s in a classroom lecturing us. She provides quotes from the services and hymns that allow us to reflect on them in new ways, since they are outside their usual setting and in slightly different translations than we’re probably used to. Even though the book is intended for interested non-Orthodox, I don’t hesitate in recommending it for those in the faith as well. It fits my criteria for a good book about my faith: it makes me want to go (as CS Lewis put it in The Last Battle) “further up and further in.” It makes me want to draw closer to God. —Bev Cooke, Orthodox Christian NetworkWith exhilarating clarity, Frederica Mathewes-Green introduces the profound mystery at the heart of the Orthodox Christian faith, which is also our common inheritance: it is a way of life to be encountered and performed; it is not reducible to a range of propositions to be considered.  With great charm and with characteristic wit and humor, she prepares the way for those who arrive at an Orthodox church for services, letting them know what to expect, what to watch for, how to lean in—letting them know how best to open their hearts to this worship that is both ancient and ever new. —Scott Cairns Beautifully written and carefully explained with a heart for the non- Orthodox. As an evangelical, who grew up in the Greek Orthodox Church, until being shipped off to boarding school in England, I found myself longing to revisit the liturgy and traditions of my youth! —Emmanuel Kampouris, Former Chairman & CEO of American Standard Companies, Founder of  www.biblemesh.com Get this book. If you are interested in learning about the Orthodox Church… If you are an inquirer or catechumen in the Orthodox Church… If you are a convert to the Orthodox Church… If you have grown up in the Orthodox Church… Get this book. Frederica Mathewes-Green has done it again. She has taken a broad and complex topic and made it interesting, accessible and enjoyable. She has a light touch, but never crosses into flippancy. In describing the basics of the Faith, she reveals the richness. And in taking on the complex, she brings clarity. Using concrete examples, she gives substance to abstractions. This book works for all kinds of audiences for several reasons. Frederica treats her readers like sensible and intelligent people. When she describes the worship services or the objects in the temple, her description is clear…but she doesn’t shy away from giving us the technical terminology. She tells us about the basics – here is how you cross yourself – but she also takes on some of the deeper theological discussions – essence and energies, anyone? Even in these deeper discussions, her prose is engaging and illuminating. One of the more difficult problems to overcome in talking about Orthodoxy is dealing with the variety within Orthodoxy. Some jurisdictions have chanters, others do not. Some have candles in the narthex, others, in front of the iconostasis only. Some choirs stand in the front, others on the side and still other in the back or in a loft. And there are a lot of other differences like this. Frederica uses an imaginary parish to describe the Orthodox worship and practice, and rather than getting tangled up in all the potential differences one might find, she just sticks with this one parish. So it is possible that the parish you attend will differ in some ways from what Frederica describes, but her decision to stay focused on one particular practice keeps the book focused, rather than following a hundred rabbit trails. Those who are well taught in the faith can gain from this book. Frederica’s prose is clear, vivid, illuminating. Even when we are willing to share our faith, sometimes we can’t find the words. Frederica has found them and given them to us in this book. Already I have been able to answer some questions from inquirers that I could not answer before. It wasn’t that I didn’t know the teaching; it was impossible for me to find the right words to make the teaching clear. I have borrowed Frederica’s words. In the beginning of the book, Frederica tells us what her husband, an Orthodox priest, writes on the whiteboard when he starts a catechism class: “What you will not learn in this class: Orthodoxy. What you will learn in this class: About Orthodoxy.” Frederica holds to this truth in her book. You will learn a lot about Orthodoxy in this book. But becoming Orthodox is experiential. Knowing Christ is experiential, relational. It’s not a head-game; it’s not about what you know. Without denigrating dogma, Frederica does the most important thing: she uses the words of Christ to call us to Christ – “Come and See.” Come and read…you will be glad you did. But don’t stop there. Come and see. —Patty Joanna Rebne  This excellent book is most valuable because it is more like a friend than a book. It's the voice you hope to hear beside you in church, murmuring explanations and encouragement as you make your journey. I highly recommend it. —Rev. Dr. Christopher Metropulos, Executive Director, Orthodox Christian Network, MyOCN.net   Frederica Mathewes-Green is one of the most engaging interpreters of the Eastern Christian way in our time. In this book she takes us by the hand as it were and introduces us to something of the mystery, wisdom, worship, and beauty—in short, the life—of Eastern Christianity. A rich, illuminating introduction. —Timothy George is the founding dean of Beeson Divinity School of Samford University and chair of the Doctrine and Christian Unity Commission of the Baptist World Alliance. Though I have always been interested in the Orthodox Church, I stayed away because I didn't know anyone that practiced. That has changed. This book is an amazing introduction to the world of Orthodoxy, The author does a masterful job of making you feel as if you are a visitor to the Church and are being walked through its many moving parts. You come to know the members of St. Felicity and feel like a part of its community. In the process of reading the book, you are introduced to the "parts" of the church, the use of Icons, traditional services, a Paschal service, and even marriage, the blessing of a home, and a funeral. It was a heartfelt and very personal journey. —Jonathan Premo I really liked this book very much indeed. Instead of starting off with basic theological concepts which can still be really overwhelming to the average reader as well as pretty hard-going, the book starts with describing a fictitious but very typical Orthodox church which is dedicated to St Felicity. From the first moment of entering the lobby- or Narthex - of an Orthodox church, it will be very unlike most other churches. Icons, sandboxes, beeswax taper candles, books in English and often Church Slavonic or Greek too! make a confusing visual introduction, which is carefully explained, introducing the Sign of the Cross, veneration of icons and prayer before entering the main part of the Church, in a quiet moment when it is empty, to explore further. We find out how and why Orthodox churches are built the way they are, look at the visually striking iconostasis, examine the lovely icons and learn about the life of St Felicity the Martyr amongst many other things. Everything is explained in a lively, conversational and reassuring manner, gently and gradually leading deeper and deeper into the mystery that is Eastern Orthodoxy. Eventually we get to visit the Church when there are services in full swing and meet Orthodox liturgy in action, which requires even more detailed explanation of concepts mentioned earlier, especially through the Hymnody of the Vigils and Liturgy where incredibly complex and profound theology can be packed into a hymn only a few lines long - but the study of which could occupy a lifetime of prayer and meditation. Finally, in the last section of the book, we learn about living the Orthodox life through events such as house blessings, the Sacraments, life events including death and burial, traditional fasting customs and prayer. What had seemed impossibly complicated at the beginning of the book seems logical and workable by the end, and it has been an enjoyable and informative read throughout. Deceptively simple but remarkably thorough, this is an excellent introductory book about Orthodoxy. —Sian Williams, The Garden Window blogThis beginner's guide to Orthodoxy is comprehensive but not ponderous, profound but lightened by humor, focused on heaven but framed in down-to-earth terms. It is, moreover, a work of superb hospitality. While guiding her guests through a fictitious but true-to-life Orthodox house of worship and introducing them to its parish family, Frederica Mathewes-Green serves up a lavish feast of Orthodox architecture, art, theology, history, and devotional practices, all seasoned with tangy anecdotes and nuggets of wisdom. Even longstanding Orthodox believers will find nourishment here. —Carole Monica Burnett, Editor, Fathers of the Church Series, Catholic University of America Press, Washington, DC Frederica Mathewes-Green, through her writing, has become the “Greeter” for every person who begins to seek out and explore the “other Christianity” which is the Eastern Orthodox Church.  Few authors can take the mystery, beauty and often daunting complexities of Orthodoxy and transform them in such an inviting path of spiritual journey as this author has done with this book. —The Very Rev Dr Chad Hatfield, Chancellor, St. Vladimir’s Orthodoxy Seminary, New York

Review

Frederica Mathewes-Green has given us a warm and inviting defense of Orthodox Christianity without being defensive.  This wonderful book explains the roots of the Ancient Truths and traditions of the Church in a conversational style to a broad audience of both Believers and those still searching, while avoiding pedantic language which can be off-putting:  a great book about the Great Church.—Andrew Natsios, Professor, George H.W. Bush School of Government and Public Service, Texas A&M University     I am simply thrilled that my dear friend Frederica Mathews-Green has written this primer on the Orthodox faith. First of all, she is one of the finest writers living -- as I hope you will see shortly -- and her ability to explain the ancient Christian faith to a generation hungry for more than flimsy rock-and-roll choruses and "relevant" sermons is without parallel. Let me say it here: this book will change lives.—Eric Metaxas, New York Times Bestselling author of Miracles and Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy.

An overall good introduction to Eastern Orthodox Christianity. On the whole, recommended. The style is serious and at the same time easy to read, with light touches here and there. The author has presented the material in the context of a visit to an imaginary Orthodox parish, using descriptions of the building, clergy, and services as take-off points for discussions of main Orthodox beliefs and practices. This reviewer would make only minor points (for not giving it five stars). There are a few errors in citations of Bible verses (wrong verse number, for instance), and some very conservative, traditional Orthodox Christians would object to using the title "Saint" for various individuals in the Catholic West after the separation from the East. Nevertheless, the book can be recommended as a general introduction to eastern Christianity.

I don't say this very often, but this is probably one of the most well written books I have come across lately. Mathewes-Green knows how to inform without being overly pedantic, boring, or losing depth. The occasional bit of humor is also entertaining without losing overall seriousness (despite how corny her jokes may be; I thought most of them were pretty funny). She addresses some important concepts from the Orthodox perspective, as well as the theological differences and positions (East vs. West, baptism, Sunday worship, cultural aspects, etc.). I definitely feel more comfortable visiting the local Orthodox Church now after reading this book

This book is a very good starting point for an inquirer. It dispels and debunks a lot of the common misunderstandings that people of other Christian denominations may have encountered when looking at the Orthodox faith from the outside. It is a very gentle and non threatening...positive work, easy to read and understand. Reading this after attending Divine Liturgy over the years has given me a recognition, richness and understanding of the experience that I did not have previously. Highly recommend to non orthodox friends, family, or people who are just curious...or even to those Orthodox who have never received education about the traditions of the church. Wonderfully done.

This is one of the best crafted books I have read. For someone new to Orthodoxy, as am I, this book may be all you need to learn about the liturgy, history, and theology of the Faith. The author begins by describing the layout of an Orthodox church building, then leads you through the structure describing the parts of the church and the liturgical activities associated with each part. With each discussion, the author narrates the history and theology that is the foundation of that aspect of the liturgy. By the time you finish the book, you have a solid understanding of the liturgy, history, and theology of Orthodoxy. In addition tho the craftsmanship of the writing, the book is very personal and easy to read. When I attended my first Orthodox service, I felt comfortable knowing what was happening, why it was happening, and amazed that this is what happened in the early church services 1900 years ago.

I am not Greek Orthodox. Frederica is a wonderful and clear writer and she tackles several theological concepts that really helps clarify the GO stance on some key doctrines. She really helped me to understand Greek Orthodoxy as much as one can I suppose without actually becoming one. I would recommend this book for someone who would like to form an informed opinion on who they are and what they believe.

By going on an imaginary walk through an Orthodox temple, the reader is introduced to a wide variety of topics about the Faith in a natural way. Though not comprehensive, this book does a good job hitting most of the major cognitive questions that people might have when first experiencing the Orthodox Church, and in an easy to follow, conversational format. There are also short videos that have been released on YouTube that parallel some of what has been said within these pages. Overall, a nicely executed and tasteful evangelistic tool within the Orthodox Church.Caveat Emptor: As might be expected from the author (though surely written in all sincerity), she does introduce the topic of women's ordination and propose a discussion about it for 3/4 of a page. This would be confusing to a new person coming into Orthodoxy who perhaps may not be expecting such a deviation in doctrinal position from an Orthodox author.

A beautifully crafted introduction to Orthodox Christianity. The author sets out to teach us as though we were newcomers to a church community. By taking us into the church building she introduces us to the spirituality of the Eastern Church: icons as windows to heaven, the Divine Liturgy bridging our world to the next. But mostly she shows us that the ancient traditions still communicate and embrace and lead us to the unflagging love and mercy of God.

Extremely readable, engaging, enjoyable and challenging. As an Anglican who has attended the Divine Liturgy a few times in Russian, once in Finnish but with a Bulgarian choir, but only once in English, I found Mathewes-Greens' format to be helpful and accessible. The divergence in theological understanding between East and West (Roman, Anglican and Protestant) was presented in a very chatty way that didn't put up "straw men" to knock down or try to win points. Mother Frederica's aim to see the reader helped in their personal transformation in Christ was evident and permeated the whole book without clichés or being preachy.

Roman Woodworking has proved to be an excellent choice. It covers more woodworking than one associates with Rome. Well illustrated, and packed with information, including identification of the species of woods used. Though it misses the cuparius (cooper), the list of recognized woodworking trades is extensive.

For a reenactor trying to reproduce pieces, this is worthless.

If your a fan of ancient woodworking and tools this book is one to get...

This is a dense, detailed read on how Romans worked with wood in every way imaginable. It's great for someone who is really into ancient history or perhaps the history of woodworking, but I think the average reader will find it too dry. I learned a lot, but since I was hoping to get ideas to integrate my woodworking class with history it wasn't really what I was looking for.

As a profesional woodworker making Colonial reproductions for over 30 years I find all the roots of Greek Revival in this book. A must read for the American craftsman.Steve Benson

Very interesting and detailed.

great book.

if you like woodworking history, this is an excellent read.

#72,971 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I bought this cook book in hopes of getting some inspiration on fairly simple & healthy recipes for the slow cooker....I was a little disappointed. I don't really understand using a crock pot for a meal that could just as easily be prepared on the stove in the same time frame. None of these recipes are really fix it & forget it....many of them have steps at 4 hrs, 6 hrs and again before serving. Also....I noticed many recipes want you to pre-cook the ingredients. I really wanted healthy recipes where I could dump ingredients in the cooker in the morning, go to work for 8 -10 hours and come home to a ready meal.

I am going to be very honest about this cookbook because it really is phenomenal, so long as you're looking to change how you eat and get healthy without (much) compromising on flavor. I bought this cookbook in Jan. 2015. Since then, I rotate between this and one other low calorie cookbook. Between the two, I've lost over 50 lbs. This cookbook is neither the easiest nor the cheapest one in my repetoire to cook out of, but it is the healthiest, especially in terms of sodium and fat content. Some of my all time favorite recipes are in this cookbook as well (Mexican chicken with sweet potatoes and that veggie pasta casserole are some of my best go-tos, but the seafood main dishes in this cookbook really shine). Over two years later and I'm still exploring new, fun things in this cookbook. However, the recipes often -- but not always -- call for a lot of prep time and use higher-end ingredients. But I consider that a small sacrifice on my fitness journey, and I don't know where I'd be today without this cookbook. I also bought it as a brand new cook, and I managed just fine as a cooking newbie.

This is one of those books I regret purchasing because while it shipped Prime I could not return it without paying the shipping cost. The book pretty much sucks (hate to be so blunt but that is how I feel). I wanted a heart healthy book that had easy to make recipes. This is not that book. There is far too much prepping, weighing and cooking - both before and after the cooking. The book relies heavily on things like no salt added beans or fat free sour cream or fat free cheese. Well if I am going to eat healthily I will certainly make my own beans in my pressure cooker or slow cooker so that I can avoid the salt and any other stuff they put in the can. And once you tell me to use fat free substitutes - most of which are made with gross//non-fresh ingredients you have lost me. Ditto with telling people to cook with Worcestershire or soy sauce - even if you are using the lowest sodium possible. I also object to cooking spray in a can. I prefer to use the olive oil that I have in my own sprayer. There is no meal plan and too much meat. I could see lots of people making bad choices. There are too many sweet dishes - heart healthy is not only about limiting fat and cholesterol but also sugar. For instance, why not have a recipe for quinoa, kale, and garlic rather than maple syrup quinoa. Finally, the whole point of a slow cooker is to be able to make things while you are away. I can make many of the things that are in this book faster and more easily (both in terms of cooking and cleaning) and probably healthier than this set of recipes.

A big part of eating nutritional food involves careful selection of ingredients, some special tastes to make nutritional eating and positive experience so that boredom does not set in. Additionally, there is a wide variety of food types to suite individual nutritional goals; low calorie, versus, low cholesterol, versus low fat, versus low sale or a balance of combinations.Instructions are concise and easy to follow. It is a cookbook, not a "how to cook dinner in five minutes" book. The slow cooker process is used appropriately to enhance flavor and to reduce cook tending time. There actually is no special food handling or preparation and the end result looks good on a nice dinner table.

There are a lot of recipes in this book and they cover a broad range of meal types and tastes. The recipes are easy enough to follow and there are good pointers for general slow cooking in the book. But I'm only giving it three stars because all of the recipes I've tried have been very bland despite a large amount of jalapenos and onions and seasoning, etc. The blandness combined with the lack of texture in the food is a bummer, and I've stopped using the cookbook.

We purchased this as a gift for my sister-in-law. She is a great cook but was looking for a way to make some healthier meals. She loves this! It has a good variety of meal ideas and she is getting to put her crockpot to work. She has tried out some of the recipes on me - and I am very thankful I picked a good recipe book.

We've made numerous things from this book and found them to be yummy and very satisfying. I noticed some folks complained about pre preparation for some of the crock pot dishes. This did not bother us because the time in the crock pot really blended the flavor and made the food fork cutting tender. Just knowing we can still eat tasty things that are still healthy is great. Did not seem to miss any flavor as the crock pot time adds it's own flavor component. Very pleased with this book!!
