Amazon.com Review

In this Hugo-winning 1991 SF novel, Vernor Vinge gives us a wild new cosmology, a galaxy-spanning "Net of a Million Lies," some finely imagined aliens, and much nail-biting suspense. Faster-than-light travel remains impossible near Earth, deep in the galaxy's Slow Zone--but physical laws relax in the surrounding Beyond. Outside that again is the Transcend, full of unguessable, godlike "Powers." When human meddling wakes an old Power, the Blight, this spreads like a wildfire mind virus that turns whole civilizations into its unthinking tools. And the half-mythical Countermeasure, if it exists, is lost with two human children on primitive Tines World. Serious complications follow. One paranoid alien alliance blames humanity for the Blight and launches a genocidal strike. Pham Nuwen, the man who knows about Countermeasure, escapes this ruin in the spacecraft Out of Band--heading for more violence and treachery, with 500 warships soon in hot pursuit. On his destination world, the fascinating Tines are intelligent only in combination: named "individuals" are small packs of the doglike aliens. Primitive doesn't mean stupid, and opposed Tine leaders wheedle the young castaways for information about guns and radios. Low-tech war looms, with elaborately nested betrayals and schemes to seize Out of Band if it ever arrives. The tension becomes extreme... while half the Beyond debates the issues on galactic Usenet. Vinge's climax is suitably mindboggling. This epic combines the flash and dazzle of old-style space opera with modern, polished thoughtfulness. Pham Nuwen also appears in the nifty prequel set 30,000 years earlier, A Deepness in the Sky. Both recommended. --David Langford, Amazon.co.uk

Review

“Fleeing a menace of galactic proportions, a spaceship crashes on an unfamiliar world, leaving the survivors--a pair of children--to the not-so-tender mercies of a medieval, lupine race. Responding to the crippled ship's distress signal, a rescue mission races against time to retrieve the children and recover the weapon they need to prevent the universe from being changed forever. Against a background depicting a space-time continuum stratified into 'zones of thought,' the author has created a rarity--a unique blend of hard science, high drama, and superb storytelling.” ―Library Journal“A tale that burns with the brazen energy of the best space operas of the golden age. Vinge has created a galaxy for the readers of the '90s to believe in...immense, ancient, athrum with data webs, dotted with wonders.” ―John Clute, Interzone“Vernor Vinge's best novel yet.” ―Greg Bear, author of Moving Mars“Vast, riveting, far-future saga...The overall concept astonishes; the aliens are developed with memorable skill and insight, the plot twists and turns with unputdownable tension. A masterpiece of universe building.” ―Kirkus Reviews“The first grand SF I've read in ages...Vinge is one of the best visionary writers of SF today.” ―David Brin, author of Earth“Fiercely original...Compelling ideas in the book include problems and advantages of group mind, galactic communications turbidity, and the prospect of civilizations aspiring to godhood.” ―Stewart Brand, founder of the Whole Earth Catalog

A science fiction story has to hang together–not in every detail or plot point, but enough to create a convincing scenario. This book fails that test.1. The main "alien" world in this book is medieval England–with dogs. It's divided into city-states replete with castles, dungeons, balconies, scrolls, tables, cabinets, bows and arrows. (Uh, don't bows and arrows require...fingers?) There are spies, assassins, artists apprentices–even a Queen, a council, and a Lord Chamberlain. This is Earth 2.0. I was hoping for something more inventive.2. When I say dogs, I don't mean German Shepherds. These aliens are tiny--some are menacing and villainous. Others are as cute and cuddly as teddy bears. There are vicious wolves that the author compares to gerbils. The cute and ominous work against each other.3. And the cute little dogs aren't the only silly aliens. We also have villainous butterflies. Then there are the Skroderiders, who seem to be intelligent potted plants on wheels. The author came up with gimmicky names for the hive-mind dogs–so we end up with Peregrine Wickwrackrun, and other polysyllabic monstrosities. I feel sorry for the poor soul who had to read this for the audio version.4. Speaking of the language...What's a sophont? What's an agrav? My eyes glazed over. Too much excessive jargon, too few orienting details, and often insufficient explanation to help the reader visualize the action. Here are a couple of examples:"Cricketsong is a synthetic race created as a jape/experiment/instrument by the High Willow upon its Transcendence."Or..."Saint Rihndell had a small harbor about sixteen million klicks around the RIP system. The move was even plausible, for it happened that there was a Skroderider terrane in the Harmonious Repose system–and currently it was just a few hundred kilometers from Rihndell's second harbor. They would rendezvous with the tusk-legs, exchanging repairs for two hundred seventeen flamed trellises. And if the trellises were perfectly matched, Rihndell promised to throw in an agrav refit."You can sort of, kinda get what the author means–but trying to wade through page after page of this is worse than reading a manual on tractor hyperdrive repair.5. And we also have missteps with characterization:"After a long period of normal progress, Jefri had come back with a counterplan. It consisted of a complete reworking of the tables for the accoustic interface."Who is Jefri? This kid Jefri is eight years old (though his canine sidekick is a budding Stephen Hawking). But do you know any eight-year-old kid who thinks like that?6. I'll just add that there are better stories out there. For an example of an outlandish, but somehow believable, sci-fi novel read CHILDREN OF TIME. If you like dogs with your sci-fi, I also recommend CITY by Clifford D. Simak and David W. Wixon--an older book but nicely written.

This is the first book I have read by Vernor Vinge. It is full of mind boggling ideas and wonderfully complex aliens. One mind boggling idea that the galaxy has zones. The closer you get to the galaxy center, the dumber you are, and the slower you go, the longer you live. A fast, smart, malevolent force from the outermost region reaches into the lower zones spreading death and destruction.Vinge depicts different types of non-human intelligence in a really thought provoking way.example the Tines who are dog like animals who have human or greater than human intelligence when gathered in packs; they are intelligent, pack animals that live on a close-in feudal world. Many individuals make up a personality. They don’t have hands but use their jaws and paws together in a coordinated way to get things done. The Skroderiders who are plant-like creatures who become intelligent when paired with carts that some being had created for them billions of years agoand beings of nearly god-like intelligence created by evolving computer networks, and more.He also comes up with interesting astronomy by splitting the galaxy up into zones in which physics is differentiated, so that it's possible for certain creatures to travel at beyond light speed and become advanced, and for others to be trapped in zones of slowness (like Earth). The entertainment to cost ratio of this book is enormous. It is long, it is well written, it gets you thinking when you put it down, and it makes you want to re-read it.

Vinge gives us a truly interesting, galactic-level speculation on how the universe may work, tying together physics and theology by positing that the laws of physics vary according to one's observational point. In other words, sentient beings close to the galactic core are governed by a time-space that is different from the time-space of the fringe. There are innumerable civilizations, which rise, change, and become extinct over millions and billions of years. Moreover, some of these close to the core discover space travel, and gradually "transcend" as they are able to travel farther from the core. The narrative and realization of this concept is not bad but nothing special. There is a basic good adventure story, but it is wordy and sometimes a bit immature. It's a long book, and I skipped over entire pages. Also, the book falls down sometimes on the creation of alien species, especially the dog-like race at the center of much of the action. But the concept still comes through. If Fire Upon the Deep were well-written, and all the alien species well thought-out, this would be one of the great sci-fi novels of all time.

Review

“Fascinating, dishy, and glimmering with insight, The Castle on Sunset is a must-read for anyone interested in the rich and racy history of Tinseltown. Shawn Levy’s entertaining and deeply researched biography of a building chronicles experiences both glamorous and sordid, historical and contemporary. This is the definitive book about Hollywood’s most storied hotel.” —Cheryl Strayed, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Wild "Reading The Castle on Sunset, I felt like I was sneaking around the hallways of the Chateau after midnight and peering through keyholes in history. Shawn Levy pulls back the velvet curtains to reveal all the decadence, glamour, ghosts and gossip of a fabled and dreamy Hollywood. Lovingly researched and wonderfully dishy.” —Joe Hagan, author of the national bestseller Sticky Fingers: The Life and Times of Jann Wenner and Rolling Stone Magazine“Alongside an endless supply of famous guests, Levy has managed to make the hotel itself a living, breathing, and wonderfully endearing character. The Castle on Sunset is thoughtfully researched and gorgeously executed.” —Jacob Tomsky, New York Times bestselling author of Heads in Beds: A Reckless Memoir of Hotels, Hustles, and So-Called Hospitality “I want to live inside this book!” —Taylor Jenkins Reid, author of Daisy Jones & The Six“The great chronicler of films and pop culture has done it again. With The Castle on Sunset Shawn Levy uncovers one of Hollywood's most elusive, and delicious, sagas—the life and times of the Chateau Marmont. For ninety years the grand, intimate hotel perched above Los Angeles'  Sunset Strip has been the respite of choice for the world's most famous and notorious celebrities to sleep, work and indulge themselves in something like solitude.... As elegant and naughty as the hotel's guests, The Castle on Sunset tells a secret history of American film, fame, and decadence. It's a spellbinding read.” —Peter Ames Carlin, New York Times bestselling author of Bruce and Homeward Bound“An irresistible, deliciously dishy deep-dive into the many lives of the storied Chateau Marmont, told in prose so witty and alive, you feel you're sitting at the bar with Dominick Dunne. This is a book worthy of its glamorous, alluring subject.”—Wednesday Martin, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Primates of Park Avenue and Untrue“It seems half of Hollywood, past and present, have either lived, worked, had an affair, drugged, or died at the Chateau Marmont.  Filled with show business stories and lore, etched against the backdrop of an ever-changing L.A., The Castle on Sunset gives the Marmont the splendid biography it deserves.”  —Steven Gaines, New York Times bestselling author of Philistines at the Hedgerow: Passion and Property in the Hamptons and The Sky’s the Limit: Passion and Property in Manhattan“For years, Shawn Levy has been shaming the rest of us who write about movies with his contagious high spirits, elegant phrasemaking, Stakhanovite appetite for research, and maddeningly natural reader rapport. As I write this, I am illegally parked on Sunset across from the Chateau Marmont, and—thanks to Levy’s louchely addictive history of the place—the old girl looks lovelier than ever. Check in, call room service, draw yourself a hot bath and luxuriate!” —David Kipen, author of Dear Los Angeles: The City in Diaries and Letters"A fabulously fizzy account."—Vanity Fair“[An] engrossing account of the L.A. hotel’s 90-year history of decadence. Weaving together historical research and firsthand accounts, the author examines the transformation of the high-end apartment building into a world-famous hotel often inhabited by itinerant Hollywood directors and actors…This eye-popping and entertainingly lurid tale of Hollywood scandal and intrigue will delight readers." —Publishers Weekly“Levy delivers all the goods on Hollywood's iconic, storied, and scandalous hotel.” —The Portland Tribune

"...an excellent book...Baierlein's writing is exceptionally clear....Every quantity is clearly defined, and discussed when any confusion could arise, whether the concept is simple or complex....Baierlein always backs up the equations with explanations in words, and with examples....The organization of topics seems natural and well thought out....certainly among the best possible choices for use in an undergraduate course." American Journal of Physics"The book, written in instructive form, shows great experience of the author as a teacher. Many examples of different degrees of difficulty either theoretical, experimental, or based on everyday observations, make the book interesting and readable. The author manages to present the complex ideas of thermal physics in a clear and attractive way." Applied Mechanics Reviews"...written so that students will receive an empirical, intuitive understanding of thermodynamics processes....The book is well written, uses plenty of descriptive material to establish the basic fundamentals, and is supplemented with useful applications." Choice"This book is a superb introduction to the key concepts of statistical mechanics, thoroughly modern in approach with current topics emphasized as well as basic principles. Baierlein's characteristic clarity of exposition makes the book ideal for self-study as well as for classroom use." H. Eugene Stanley, Boston University"I enjoyed reading this tremendously. The author has a personal and thoughtful way of introducing and arranging the material. He has succeeded in making many of the difficult concepts more intuitive and more within the grasp of students who have very little background in thermodynamics and thermal physics. In the hands of a skilled teacher, this book would serve very well in its intended role." Journal of Statistical Physics"...very well written and a pleasure to read...what makes this text stand out is the quality, clarity, and conciseness of the writing." Physics Today

Hello. I have been studying physics and chemistry for about the last seven years and I am currently a graduate student. I am reading through Baieriein and thoroughly enjoying the book. It does require I think, a bit of a background on waves and oscillations to know exactly what is happening in some of the derivations and an introductory course in chemistry, specifically thermodynamics, helps to recognize how these concepts are put to use. Besides that, the book is straightforward and the text is clear. Baierlein starts with very physically intuitive examples to derive his expressions and express the concepts and then moves to the abstract. The problems in the back, or what I have completed of them, are well thought out and do not ask the read to make great leaps between what is presented in the chapter and what is asked for.If you need a solid and straightforward introduction to the subject I would definitely recommend this.

This was a great book to read, came very quickly and was in good condition. Very informative and helped me learn more about thermal physics.

I had trouble with a quantum book last year due to lacking any real examples. But this book is very nice in providing those examples. Some of the questions in each chapter start to diverge from the book some requiring either to look up values online or to have prior knowledge to something relating to this subject that even a major like myself lacked.

Great book the author has really great examples and also is quite easy to read. Accompanying a Thermal Physics course this book is definitely helpful and a great tool/ reference.

Book has fairly good qualitative descriptions. However the books description and work regarding analytically problem solving is minimal at best. Good for courses that focus on qualitative but bad for courses focusing on the analytic.

The textbook is little to no help when it comes to learning physics. The language is simpler, but it tells you very little about wear equations come from, how they are derived, what the constant values are, and the homework practically leaves you hanging. There are almost no example problems to help you understand actual numerical calculations. Not to mention the Index is completely useless. Even things that the book defines and names are hard to find using the index. I had to use a bunch of tabs to mark where things were. Also, the homework problems are poorly worded. Towards the later chapters, I honestly had the hardest time trying to figure out what the problem was asking for. I learned more online and through wikipedia and other sites than using this book. Also, the overlap in the use of certain variables does not help to comprehend equations and relationships. Simply terrible book.I would not recommend spending that kind of money on this text. I suggest checking the school library or borrowing from a friend or even the professor himself. BTW, don't even try to look for homework help online or even trying to type in keywords from the problem. You aren't going to find anything that is similar to the problems this book asks you to solve. The book physical properties are good. Nice cover finish for a paperback. Pages are solid and well bounded.Thermal Physics

This book was very clear and concisely written. It made my understanding of Thermodynamics greater in depth, than any other resource I have used in the pass.

Not an issue with the text itself, but the equations and figures on Kindle PC are so small they are barely readable even when the font is resized, making the Kindle version of the textbook nearly useless.

I went into this book with eyes of the skeptic, and I was wrong. I have never really gotten into "Riverwind", or "Goldmoon" for that matter, but in this book, I really warmed up to the character. The story was great, It didnt leave big holes, or you were never left wondering about things. I have allready been a big fan of Mr. Pierson, and this was no let down. I really hope to see some more stories about Kronn, and Catt, the Kender Brother and Sister. In the past, I have found Kender to be, well, typical annoying Kender, but, in this story, I just wanted to go meet everyone of them, (Before I'd still empty my pockets out, I mean, they are still kender after all ;-) ).So to sum up, READ THIS BOOK. -Dj Toasty

First off, I have to say that this is probably the best written Dragonlance book I've read outside of Weis & Hickman's work. Most impressive is Pierson's strong grasp of the characters. Riverwind was handled brilliantly and I liked how he gave the different kender separate personalities and didn't make them carbon copies of Tasslehoff like many other authors do. His pacing was also excellent, with enough "down time" for character development in between fight scenes, but not so much that the story starts to drag.I was disappointed when, in THE SECOND GENERATION, Riverwind and Goldmoon's children were mentioned, but we never got to meet them. This book rectifies that problem. Taking place after the Chaos War, this book tells the story of Riverwind's journey to Kendermore to help the kender stave off an ogre invasion. As stated earlier, the book is very well written and paced, but doesn't shy away from killing off characters. It makes for a very dark book helping to set up the new status quo in Ansalon after the disappearance of both the gods and their magic. Unfortunately, I read Jean Rabe's DRAGONS OF A NEW AGE trilogy first and so more or less knew what would happen by the end. I highly recommend reading this series (this book being the first of five in the BRIDGES OF TIME saga) before jumping into Rabe's trilogy. If you liked what Weis and Hickman have written in this setting, you'll most likely enjoy this entry as it has a similar feeling to what they've done. A quick read, but thoroughly enjoyable.

I have been a fan of Dragonlance for almost 15 years, having first read the original trilogy (Dragonlance Chronicles: Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night, and Dragons of Spring Dawning) when I was around age 13. I remember staying up till dawn, unable to put the books down! Since then, the series has become rather popular, and dozens of novels set in the Dragonlance world have been written. While most of them are a fun read for adults, few of them are as well written and truly capture the spirit of the Dragonlance world as "Spirit of the Wind." While a popular series, Dragonlance is often criticized for being too contrived and simple for adult readers. So many authors have put their hands into creating the Dragonlance world, but many readers will agree that few have managed to capture the imagination as much as the original Chronicles. With this novel, however, Chris Pierson succeeded in doing so. It is assumed from the summary of the book that this novel tells the story of the last campaign of Riverwind, one of the original companions from Chronicles. What isn't assumed, however, is that Riverwind's death would be so beautifully written as to merit a ranking besides the deaths of Flint and Sturm (two beloved characters whose memorable deaths, written by the original authors Weis and Hickman, are often heralded as the most moving moments in Dragonlance literature). My hat is off to Mr. Pierson, who proved that not all Dragonlance novels are merely a "fun read," and for making an adult married woman feel like a 13-year-old again!

The best novels in the Dragonlance series are undoubtedly the ones written by the original authors - Margret Weiss and Tracy Hickman. Everything else just seemed like imitators playing in the same yard. Some books in the series do stand out of the pack, and 'Spirit of the Wind' is definately one of them. The story centers around Riverwind, one of the original characters from the first trilogy in the series. Riverwind is dying, and decides to leave the world not in a bed, but in battle. He volunteers himself to aid two poor souls in their attempt to defend their homeland against a hideous dragon. It's a story of sacrifice and bravery, and is very well written. At times it seemed to steal from David Gemmell's excellent book 'Legend', but all in all quite a pleasure to read.

This is one of the best written DL books around. Mr. Pierson has a very good grasp on keeping his readers wanting more. His battle scenes are well thought out (and acted), his characters never lose who they are (ie. they never act like anyone else, they stay true to form), and its always nice to revisit some old friends and make some new ones too!Riverwind was not Kendermore's first choice of heroes but as Paxina states "You'll do!" The red dragon Malystryx is out for conquest, and she enlists the Ogres to help pave her way. Little by the little Malys' magic changes the land around her, and here Kendermore and Kenderwood are her targets. How does an aging Hero of the Lance deal with this mess? Read and find out, you won't be dissapointed!

I wasnt sure if i would like this book because i was never a Riverwind fan. But the energy involved in this book really made it a winner. I couldn't believe it when i found myself caring for the characters and I also respect the ways in which he kills characters. Killing characters properly is crucial in a good fantasy and its done here. Way to go Chris and way to bring us a proper view of the plainsman we never knew!

This was a really good book. Even if the story itself had [been bad], I'd have recommended it based on the first 15 or so pages alone. There was a meeting of old friends that was so well written it could've been written by W&H themselves. Truly moving. This story had everything you've come to expect from a good DL book: good plot, great characters who become like family & the sorrow that comes from losing them. Great book.

Love Disguised

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up–This novel begins slowly but quickly builds steam. Young and charismatic Will Shakespeare longs to escape Stratford to become a playwright in London, an occupation frowned on by his father. Fate and duty seem to interweave as Will is sent to London to deal with his father's debt. There he meets his muse, a witty and savvy barmaid named Long Meg, who is attempting to escape her past. When Will is robbed, Meg offers the help of her brother Mack (Long Meg in disguise). The two work together to recover Will's fortune and settle his father's debt as they work together to realize Will's dreams. Chapters alternate between Will's story and Meg's, giving readers a chance to know both of them. The novel contains many allusions to the Bard's works that fans will delight in, while readers unfamiliar with them will enjoy the story on its own merit. The author includes a note highlighting the historical facts that influenced her tale as well as some resources for further reading. Love Disguised will leave readers inspired to delve into the works of Shakespeare and discover Klein's sources of inspiration.–Tiffany Davis, Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NYα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist

*Starred Review* Creatively interweaving fact and fiction, Klein (Ophelia, 2006) imagines Shakespeare’s youth in this immersing tale. It’s 1582, and 18-year-old Will Shakespeare longs to escape Stratford and his strict father to pursue acting and playwriting. In London on family matters, he meets teen pub-maid Meg Macdougall, an orphan, who is attempting to overcome, and conceal, her childhood by thieving and disguising herself as a boy named “Mack.” When Will is robbed, Meg offers Mack’s assistance. Meanwhile, pub-servant Violetta enlists Meg/Mack’s help in wooing Will, but Will and Meg start developing feelings for one another. Multiple plots unfold and, as characters converge, their experiences, individually and together, reveal the complexities of relationships, love, and the pursuit of dreams. Told in alternating stories, and employing Elizabethan theater classic-comedic devices (disguises, romantic mix-ups, etc.), Klein vividly portrays time and place in descriptive prose, rich with historical detail and archaic flavor. Will and Meg are distinctly drawn, engaging protagonists journeying toward self-discovery in this entertaining, inventive story for historical-fiction and theater fans. The abundant Shakespearean/literary allusions will resonate most with those Bard-familiar, but won’t lessen new-to-Shakespeare readers’ enjoyment. The endnote provides historical context, story inspirations, and further-reading suggestions. Grades 7-12. --Shelle Rosenfeld

Any mention of Shakespeare, any at all, and I will usually be down to read or watch something. So when Love Disguised popped up on my radar, I just had to check it out. While it was a fun, diverting read, it also fell into the realm of slightly predictable and not very memorable. As always, here's the list of the things I liked and the things I didn't like about this book:The references to Shakespeare's works were such fun. It felt like a bit of an Easter Egg hunt, really. With every chapter read, there were plots or personalities that reminded me of what Shakespeare works I have read. I thought it was fun, really, as it's already clear I'm a big fan of Will's. Plus, it seemed to all make sense... In a ridiculous sort of way,It was basically a mad set of events, reminiscent of Shakespeare's own comedies. Despite being slightly over the top, it was basically hilarious! Honestly, it provided a good laugh when I read it on my plane ride. As I already mentioned, the story was ridiculous but in the best way. At the very least, I was entertained. There was no real character development. While the cast of characters is no doubt part of the entertainment, they were also easily mixed up. I truly didn't feel much of a connection to any of them, even the main ones. This usually happens when I don't sense that a character's grown throughout the story, which was the case here. The story was fun, true, but it was also forgettable. The instant I shut the book, it was like I'd never read it. Facts and characters got all mixed up in my head, as it didn't leave a real impression. In the end, the fact that there isn't much I can say about this book is what really says it all. Love Disguised could have been much more than it was but failed to really meet any of my personal expectations. It's good enough if you're bored on a subway and in need of something to pass the time, but overall, I wouldn't recommend it.

I will make an admission here: I am an English major who hates Shakespeare. Well, most Shakespeare, except for Twelfth Night and a few others. So when I found out Lisa Klein had written a ya novel about how Shakespeare came up with the plot for Twelfth Night, I jumped on it. Sadly, what I found was mostly a trite and overwrought story that left me laughing at it's weirdness in the end-and not in a good way.The book opens up with a LOT of telling. (you know, in the show vs. tell fashion that most writers hear about at some point.) We get the complete background on Meg and Will, which reads more like a bio than a piece of writing meant to engage a reader. True, Meg has a really interesting background, as her father died in prison and her mother went mad with grief, thinking she'd killed him, then killed the priest she was sleeping with to try and relieve his debts before jumping off a warf. Will's is stitched together from historical fact, all about his father and blah blah blah. I found myself skipping ahead just to get to a point where something actually happened. Then Will falls in love with the younger Hathaway sister, sleeps with the older one by mistake and runs off to London to stand for his soon-to-be-imprisoned father in court. There he meets Meg, once a thief, now a tavern maid, who is unusually large for her age. Will is robbed by some of Meg's old companions, and Meg becomes "Mack," Meg's "twin brother," in order to help him get his money back. If you've read Twelfth Night, you can put together a lot of what happens after that. If not ... so much confusion ensues.I've mentioned that the beginning was slow, but even more than that, the language used was overwrought. I can tell Klein was trying to use English as Shakespeare and his companions would have spoken it, but it didn't work for me. I've read a lot of historical fiction, and I've seen people use older English in ways that isn't clunky, but this ... didn't work. I was bored and the characters seemed like cartoons from a melodrama instead of people I wanted to relate to. Because of this, I disliked most of the characters from the start, from the overly dramatic Violetta to the overly boisterous Overby and the overly stereotypical faux-villains, who were more like something out of a dark Three Stooges. The one shining character in all this, who kept me going through the entire book, was Meg. Her ingenuity got her out of a dark hole when her parents died, her loyalty was fierce and her heart was good and righteous at all times. Sometimes, yes, she did feel a little overly righteous, but I was pretty ok with it all most of the time. Her confusion between her identities of Mack and Meg were more than comical-it was serious and it was real. It was her personality and inner struggles that kept me going, even when all the other characters had me ready to put the book down and DNF it.This also includes Will Shakespeare. As a main character, he was clumsy, naive and bland. He had moments of genius, but those ideas could only work if Meg was right there, pushing them along. I understand that Meg and Will's friendship was the main point of this book, but it started seeming like Will was incapable of doing anything unless Meg was secretly pushing it from behind. All in all, I was not impressed by this book. I thought the plot was crazy and overdone-and in the end got so confusing I wasn't sure how it even worked out. The characters were mostly irksome, except for the one shining light that was Meg. If you're a real lover of Twelfth Night, then this might interest you out of parody's sake, but otherwise I'd suggest getting this one for the library if you're at all interested.

Review

Bigfoot Visits the Big Cities of the World is a colorful, addictive, and wholesomely absorbing pick for young ones, old ones, and everyone in between. --The Portsmouth ReviewThis book is such a fun search and find book. I love Bigfoot, kind of obsessed actually. As are my kids. It has become one of our favorite bedtime routines. It really never gets old. Plus, you get to talk about all the places Bigfoot is visiting, which adds ever more fun. A great book for the kids or the entire family. --Mrs. Mommy BooknerdI like the little bit of Bigfoot lore that was included, including the origin of the name and they way the creature is seen and what they are called in a variety of cultures, to make the hunt more interesting to young readers. There is also a good amount of information and history about each of the cities that bigfoot is hiding in throughout this book. I like the inclusions of real photographs from the locations, as well as the seek and find illustrations. I think many young readers will skip over the informational bits and just to the bigfoot hunts, but I feel like some will take the time to read, and any chance for them to continue learning I will fully support. Some of the seek and finds were challenging, but in a good way. I enjoyed the book and think that most that would pick up this style of book will agree.--Sharon the LibrarianI like this book. This was a Christmas gift for our 8 yr. old grandson who is into Yetis and such. He also likes Where's Waldo type books. This book has that but it was not what I was expecting. It is actually educational combined with fun. There are different geographical locations with information and things to do or learn throughout the book as well as the seek and find pages.

Purchased as a birthday gift for a grandparent. He introduced my son to Bigfoot and they both get a kick out of watching shows. The two of them had fun looking at this book together. It features search pages as well as informative pages about each of the cities Bigfoot is hiding in. Entertaining and educational. A cute gift for any Bigfoot fan.

This is more than a look and find book. It gives a little history and known facts about some of the biggest cities in the world and then has a find the big foot page. Love how the child can get some reading in and a little knowledge as well. I'm giving this as a gift and I can't wait to give it.

Pretty good seek and find. My only reason for giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it's a bit weird to me that only half of the illustrations are colored in. It makes it look a bit unfinished and a little less challenging/fun.

The Bigfoot fan in this family really liked it. Some of the hidden items were easier to find but others were a challenge. Great stories/writing included to break up the puzzles.

Perfect for a Yeti fan who is 7 years old. He will enjoy the puzzle to find yeti, as well as learn about geographical locations.

Fun activities...challenging to find all the items. My granddaughters (ages 5 & 7) enjoyed briefly, then were bored.

my kid found everything so fast and the illustration was not my favorite
