Be with Me Always: Essays, by Randon Billings Noble

Review

"A motley collection of pieces. . . . Essayist Noble has a focused, tight style, often employing the technique of looking at somewhat discrete items (or memories) and seeking connections among them. . . . Unique eyes look at familiar things and somehow make them seem both odder and more familiar."—Kirkus (Kirkus 2018-12-09)“In her brilliant collection Be with Me Always, Randon Billings Noble explores the frailty of romance, of the human body, and of us all, with startling honesty, admirable ingenuity, genuine insight, and, always, with energy and surprise.”—Dinty W. Moore, author of Between Panic and Desire (Dinty W. Moore 2018-09-14)“A marvel. These essays are lyrical and innovative. . . . Dracula is a guide to a first love, Robinson Crusoe carries her through pregnancy with twins, Terry Tempest Williams helps her survive a cancer diagnosis, and E. M. Forster and Facebook help her manage the strange faces at her high school reunion. I admire Noble and her essays very much.”—Ned Stuckey-French, author of The American Essay in the American Century (Ned Stuckey-French 2018-09-14)“How does a body want? How does a body know? And in wanting and in knowing, why does a body refrain from solidifying desire and knowledge? These are the questions that Randon Billings Noble asks in her essays, which cut so deep into the body.”—Jenny Boully, author of Betwixt-and-Between: Essays on the Writing Life (Jenny Boully 2018-09-14)

Approaching an essay collection can be a little intimidating - I tend to think, "Oh dear, will these essays be plodding and educational?" But this gorgeous essay collection on the theme of hauntedness is like nothing I've read in a very long time: as captivating as a gothic novel, as riveting as a tell-all memoir, as sweeping and lyrical and thought-provoking as the best sort of poetry. And, yes, educational, but more soaring than plodding. The essays are as short, sharp-edged, and brilliantly colored by earthly experience as gemstones. I found the book hard to put down and I wanted to leap from one essay to the next to be plunged once again into the author's rich inner and outer worlds. In these pages you'll find love: passionate, illicit, wholesome, mad, motherly, wifely, deadly, bookish, and brave. With any luck, as I was, you'll be awakened to the marvelous and protean potential of the essay as a literary form. I noticed a couple of other reviews have criticized the book as if it were a memoir, for failing to be a proper memoir, and have thereby missed the whole point that this is an assemblage of reflections and memories and yearnings, but not a book-length sequential narrative of a life. Such an assemblage has the potential to be laborious for the reader, presenting us with the task of piecing together that narrative for ourselves, but Noble has constructed her collage so artfully that for me it didn't at all feel laborious or disconnected and the outlines of her life emerge through the roughly chronological ordering of the essays.

While swimming at the shore In her teens, Randon Billings Noble suddenly found herself trapped in a riptide—fortunately she and her terrified friend were both pulled out by a lifeguard and made their way back to the calm and safety of the beach. In this debut collection “Be With Me Always: Essays” (2019) Billings Nobel explores the intrigue of emotional connections shaped by haunted memory and the near death experience with other essays of particular and individual interest. The event with the riptide seemed frightening enough, but in college study abroad Billings Noble was in a motorcycle accident (in an unnamed French countryside) that left her hospitalized and unable to understand the language regarding her care in the emergency room. It was interesting the stages and phases of trauma she faced and went through. Essayist Montaigne describes the “sweet feeling” of those who let themselves slide into “Sleep” removed from the body (near death) that mysteries were revealed to him.Reflections of literature were discussed length: The powerful pull of love across the ages is captured in the intensity of haunting/horror of "Dracula" Bram Stoker (1897). The Hours, Michael Cunningham (1998) which Billings Nobel avoided reading for years due to the shadowy pull of “conflicting gravity”. Isolation and loneliness were a prominent theme in Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe (1719). The stories that shaped a creators world, (Victor) “Frankenstein,” Mary Shelley (1818) related to “alchemy and science” but nothing prepared him for the dramatic creatures need, according to the author. When Billings-Nobel discovered she and her husband would be the parents of twins, she was unprepared and feared the loss of her independence. Her pregnancy was difficult, the large bulk of her expanding body, the bloating and swelling, loss of mobility. In her 5th month it looked like she would deliver any day. After her twin daughters were born, her despair lifted; and at one point she wrote about them in an unclear uncertain metaphorical poetic manner. There were several essays that featured facts, which seemed similar to “Trivial Pursuit”… for example: “A Pill To Cure Love” acetaminophen aka Tylenol. Others included “How to Fire A Gun” and quite oddly, the missing arm of Stonewall Jackson (May 3, 1863). It would have been more interesting to read longer details of Billings Nobels’ 3 week study abroad in London-- she toured the Tower of London and visited the grave of Anne Boleyn which was marked unceremoniously by a small square slab at the Chapel Royal of St. Peter. The writing was not in any particular order, the reflections and observations were from past to present, some essays were more interesting and engaging than others. ~ 3* GOOD. ** With thanks to the University of Nebraska Press via NetGalley for the DDC for the purpose of review.

The sign of a great teacher/coach is to make something that can seem difficult easy to understand and apply. Play Tennis with Passion is a tennis bible that can be kept and read over and over again throughout our tennis journey no matter your level. It explains tennis "truths" in a easy to read way to not only learn but practice and apply. I found Edgar's coaching Weapons quite entertaining and a fun way to remember his points, " Before you look over the net, make sure your inner game is set", rang true to some of my personal tennis growth needs. I recommend this book for tennis professionals and players of all levels. You will refer back to this often.

Interesting book about plan and market as an alternative to capitalism

Alternatives to Capitalism has had some major endorsements. Here's what some people have said about it:"Many recognize that the various forms of “really existing capitalism” have deficiencies that range from harmful to lethal. Few have carefully thought through “really existing alternatives” that offer hope for escape from problems and dilemmas that are profound, and imminent. Robin Hahnel and Erik Olin Wright are two of the most thoughtful and perceptive analysts to have pursued this critically important course. Their reasoned and informed interaction is a major contribution towards clarifying the paths forward."- Noam Chomsky"This is an extraordinary book. At one level it is a profoundly informed discussion of critical issues of radical systemic structure. At another it is a model of how a thoughtful dialogue on challenging and highly contested issues should be carried on. A must read for anyone seriously interested in how to conceive the possible forms of fundamental systemic change."- Gar Alperovitz, author of What Then Must We Do: Straight Talk about the Next American Revolution, and Co-Founder of the Democracy Collaborative"If you’ve ever wondered what a democratic economy could really look like, treat yourself to this engaging (and wonderfully comradely) conversation about two leading schools of contemporary socialist thinking—participatory economics and real utopias—by their distinguished founders." - Juliet Schor, author of Plenitude: The New Economics of True Wealth and Professor of Sociology at Boston College"Although the failings of neoliberalism are increasingly clear - social, economic and environmental - the myth of "no alternative" remains a powerful one. In this e-book, Robin Hahnel and Erik Olin Wright debate what an alternative might look like. Should it involve markets? Is a role for markets compatible with democratic values? To be so, what other institutions and policies must be in place? Their discussion is a superb introduction to these fundamental debates."- Stuart White, author of Equality and Director of the Public Policy Unit at Oxford University

The Patchwork Bike

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2-In this Australian import, three siblings who live in a remote village "at the edge of the no-go desert" in a "mud-for-walls home," make do with what they have to entertain themselves. They like to run, jump, and climb, but their pride and joy is their bike, which they cobbled together out of spare parts and junk. The handlebars are made of branches, and the wood-cut wheels go "winketty wonk" as they ride, a nice onomatopoetic touch. The story by itself is superb, but the artwork elevates it further. Rudd's street art approach is raw yet refined as nearly every brushstroke is visible on the repurposed cardboard backgrounds. Much like Javaka Steptoe's Radiant Child or Jane Yolen's What To Do with a Box, the format shows the incredible creativity of young minds combined with the constraints of poverty. Rudd not only perfectly matches the tone culturally but also works in a few nods to the Black Lives Matter movement, which he explains in his artist's note. VERDICT An excellent story and conversation starter.-Peter Blenski, Greenfield Public Library, WIα(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Clarke’s poetically compressed language hurtles joyfully along, while Rudd’s illustrations, made on cardboard boxes with spirited swaths of paint, burst with irrepressible life. I felt it was hyped up online as compare to the content. Wouldnt recommend it for children. Nice coffee table book for adult conversation. To boring for a child

It took a little while, but at some point creators of children’s books realized that cardboard holds an almost supernatural power over the imaginations of small children. It is the ultimate building material. Strong and sturdy, yet malleable. Bonus: You can draw on it. Interestingly, in terms of plotting I’ve seen it mentioned in graphic novels far more often than picture books. Books like “Cardboard” by Doug TenNapel and “Cardboard Kingdom” by Chad Sell may even take it to an extreme level. There are a couple exceptions, of course. “Not a Box” by Antoinette Portis and “What to do With a Box” by Jane Yolen exist, but both emphasize the boxiness rather than the cardboardyness of the materials at hand. It got me to thinking. Can we get a book out there that appreciates less what cardboard does, and more how it acts and looks and feels? “The Patchwork Bike” by Maxine Beneba Clarke and illustrated by Van Thanh Rudd isn’t actually about cardboard at all, really. What it is about is having fun with the things that you make with your own hands. It’s only when you look closely that you see that the art itself is done on cardboard, reinforcing the theme, and giving this book the much needed heft it needs to carry the tale. Picture books are supposed to be a perfect amalgamation of text and image, and thanks to the use of cardboard, you get that in this stellar combination. The setting is simple. This is a village, where home are constructed from mud, sitting on the edge of a vast desert. Our narrator is a sunglasses-clad black girl, who introduces the reader to her crazy brothers and her “fed-up” Muslim mom. The kids have fun climbing the Fiori tree or sliding down the sand mountain they constructed, sure, but the true fun for them comes when they get to ride their bike. It’s a mishmash amalgamation of wooden wheels, tin-can handles, and other parts scavenged around and about. Still, it has everything you’d want. A license plate, painted on lights, “and a bell that used to be Mum’s milk pot”. When these three kids skid around on their bike, they are unstoppable. This thing is theirs. We talk a lot about the need for diversity in children’s literature and I’ve been very happy to see how books for kids in the last few years have shifted a little bit, just a little bit, away from the rote “here is my family” types of tales to stories in which they take their own lives for granted. If that makes any sense. “The Patchwork Bike” is a perfect example of what I’m talking about. One of my favorite two-page spreads shows a woman in a white hijab and dress walking down the street to the description, “and this is our fed-up mum.” In another two-page spread she’s seen again, but from behind, while she watches her three kids zoom by on their bike. They’re nothing more than a blaze and blur of color while she looks interestingly fuzzy to us, like our focus isn’t on her at all but just over her shoulder. The phrase “fed-up mum” is invoked for a second time here. I love that. I love that fed-up moms are universal. I feel like we need to see more of that in our books. Less patient, tireless, saintly parents from other cultures. More irritated, exhausted, fed-up, deeply human parents, please. Something we can relate to a little. As for the quality of the writing itself, I liked very much Ms. Clarke’s use of repetition and the way she describes the kids’ everyday lives and village. “This is the big Fiori tree where we go jumping and climbing, out in the no-go desert, under the stretching-out sky.” When she describes the bike, new words that you instantly understand pop up. “It has a bent bucket seat and handlebar branches that shicketty shake when we ride over sand hills.” Later the wheels “winketty wonk” when they speed. These Seussian terms could strike you as overly precious if you were unready for them, but I liked their spunk. What they really do is give you a feel for the personality of the narrator (who, according to the Author’s Note at the end, is definitely female). You just look at her expression when she’s driving that bike. This is someone who is in control and loving every second of it.Now I’m a mom. I have kids. I’ve drawn on cardboard before because that’s what parents do. And if you’ve ever drawn on it yourself then you’ll know that it’s a strange, unforgiving material. There are unexpected divots and dips to be found. Press too hard and the tip of your marker goes right through a weak spot. Then there’s that odd striation that prevents anyone from making a straight line. It would never in a million years have occurred to me that you could use that buckling and jittery quality as a way of heightening some aspect of a picture book's plot. Rudd has cracked a code I didn’t even know existed, and he did it with acrylics. When he wants to show speed, like on the endpapers, he paints lengthwise, across the creases. The natural breaks in the paint emphasize speed. Later he paints below the image of a broken down police car and the paint looks like the reflection of water, disjointed and pooling into incongruous puddles.I’ve seen a lot of children’s books try to replicate the look of cardboard, rather than use it as a template right from the start. The fact that Rudd is painting on cardboard is cool, but do not let it distract from the fact that the paintings themselves are marvelous, even when they’re being more straightforward than lines of motion. When the main character indicates her “crazy brothers”, you notice that reflected in the lenses of her sunglasses are what look to be mountains and valleys of deep purples and blues. Look too how Mr. Rudd is constantly changing the perspective of the reader. You’re above the kids looking down. No, you’re looking at them straight on. Now they’re just tiny silhouettes on a hill. Now they’re so big the page can only encompass half a face. You could probably write whole essays on the choices the artist makes with this title. At the end of the book is a somewhat unique page containing both an Author’s Note and an Illustrator’s Note, with photos of both of the creators. Because this book was originally released in Australia, the two have a sense of distance and perspective that they’re able to bring to this new American edition. Ms. Clarke discusses the Muslim mother character, how kids have connected to the book since its release, and the landscape of poverty. Mr. Rudd takes a slightly different tactic. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, he took care to make sure that the two brothers in the book invoke both “don’t shoot” hand movements and the ballerina on top of the Wall Street bull sculpture during Occupy Wall Street. When the kids create a bark license place, it reads “BLM”, making this perhaps one of the few picture books out there to invoke the movement multiple times this directly. My kids are always game for a new picture book, so I toted this one out a recent morning to see what their reaction would be. They looked at it with interest. The setting and characters were new to them, but they didn’t find anything difficult to understand. It was only when it ended that my daughter expressed some disappointment. “There’s not much of a story”, she said. She then explained that once we saw the bike we’d get to see the kids engage in some kind of an adventure. Instead, to her mind all we did was see what the bike was and that was it. I can see what she’s saying. There are no heroes or villains in this piece. I’d hoped that she might be inspired a bit by the art, but to be fair she's always thought of cardboard as great stuf. So, there you go. I’ll level with you. Plot forward, it is not. That’s not its purpose or intent but if you have a kid that thinks of books only in terms of advancing a story, best to give them a heads up beforehand that this isn’t that. What this book reminds me of, almost more than anything else, is “Radiant Child” by Javaka Steptoe. In both cases you have an artist taking found materials (discarded wood in one case and cardboard in another), painting on that material, and turning it into something truly beautiful. Of course one of those two books was set in America and this book is set in an unnamed village in an unnamed country. Recently I heard someone note that when you make a booklist and you include the stories of black children, you should make an effort to include some tales that contain, what they called, black joy. Kids having fun. Being silly. Being adventurous. Having the times of their lives. This book exudes that very joy. It alludes to police brutality, economic disparities, and the Black Lives Matter movement while at the same time showing children having a great time thanks to their own devices. Cardboard is a flexible material. This book has flexible uses. Use both wisely and well.

Simple, easy to follow text accompanies great illustrations that are designed to look like they were drawn on corrugated cardboard. They give the story an authentic feeling, since it's set in a rural village that could easily be in Africa or Australia. Three brothers take young readers along as they enjoy the fun and freedom of riding a bike assembled from such varied components as wooden wheels, a bark license plate, tin cans and their mother's milk pot. Colloquial words used to describe the sounds and moves made while enjoying the bike, add to the ethnic flavor. The note by the author and another by the illustrator in the back are extremely useful in helping to understand the message and intent of the book. They should be shared by teachers and parents when the book is read. Overall, it's a simple, yet beautiful slice of life tale that will introduce young children to a different reality, that also points out how universal having fun with just a little can be.

My son received this book from his school library at conferences last week. Why wouldn't a 5-year old pick out the one with the motorcycle on the cover? As I was reading it to him that night in bed, it seemed like an innocent enough story...until I got to the page with the "BLM" license plate artwork. A couple pages later another picture depicted the black kids riding on the bike with a fist in the air. I don't appreciate anti-American propaganda fed to my children through their books. Any legitimacy the book had through it's story was destroyed by the "artwork" appearing to promote the Black Lives Matter movement. A reading of the author/illustrator notes confirmed all my suspicions. The author and artists are both activists who understand well what they are doing. This book is not as much about poverty as it is about someone else's horrible approach of how to deal with it. If you believe that American Capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty than any other economic system in the history of the world, you might want to stay away from this book. If you believe that America is the LEAST racist country on the face of the earth, and BLM exists for the sole purpose of perpetuating a myth, you might want to stay away from this book. Finally, if you care about your kids and think it wise to protect them from subliminal propaganda, you might want to stay away from this book.

THE PATCHWORK BIKE is told in free verse poetry. The book is about some impoverished children in what appears to be Africa and how they go about making a bicycle from all kinds of different parts: pieces of wood, tin cans, a flour sack, and an old milk pot. The book is also about the sense of freedom the bike provides the children. At the end of the book there is half a page of notes from both the author and the illustrator and what they hoped to achieve in writing and illustrating the book.

Review

"De Mille was a writer like her father and uncle and grandfather, and not only a writer of bodies in space. She wrote prose, too, and gorgeously, with tremendous and purposive contradiction, about her life as a dancer and choreographer. To my mind, Dance to the Piper is as good a book about dance as any book about cinema written by a director.” —Jonathon Sturgeon, Flavorwire"[A] finely written memoir, Dance to the Piper...was originally published in 1951. It's a dry and self-deprecating bildungsroman that was, by her account, scratched out on napkins and envelopes while she was 'doing a barre' or tending to an infant." —Harper's“Perhaps the best dancer ever to write and the best writer ever to dance.” —Janice Berman, Newsday“Nobody can read this history of courage and belief in an ideal without understanding both dancing and human nature a little better. Indeed, I believe nobody can read this book without following it up with a salutation, ‘Bravo, Agnes de Mille!’ ” —Carl van Vechten“Dance to the Piper is rich in the vitality, honesty and humour which are de Mille’s professional characteristics; it gives excellently well-balanced judgements of the great dancers whom she has seen and worked with; and it also paints lively portraits of the courageous author herself.” —Lillian Browse, The Spectator"Enhanced with traditional ballet as well as the modern school, she was associated with both, but she made her success in her own style of American modern. She writes with verve about all three schools, describes perspectively the inseparableness of dancer and dancing, the agonies of work and exhaustion, the personality of the true ballerina who must be cut off from the norm of social and sexual life." --Kirkus Reviews "One of the finest and most eloquent writers on dance the world has known" --Clive Barnes, Dance Magazine

About the Author

Agnes de Mille (1905–1993) was born in New York City, the daughter of the writer and director William C. de Mille, and the niece of the well-known film producer-director Cecil B. DeMille. Raised in New York and California, she attended the University of California, Los Angeles, and trained to become a dancer, studying in New York and London and touring with companies in the United States and Europe. In 1942 de Mille had her first great success as a choreographer with Rodeo. She went on to choreograph celebrated musicals such as Oklahoma! and Carousel, and the award-winning Brigadoon and Kwamina, fusing modern and classical dance techniques to create her own innovative style. She also wrote widely about her work as a dancer, the early years in Hollywood, and childhood summers spent at the family estate in New York. Despite a stroke in 1975 that led to partial paralysis, de Mille continued to work, choreographing dances for American Ballet Theatre and other companies, as well as writing and lecturing. In 1986 she was awarded the National Medal of Arts for her lifetime achievement in the theater. Joan Acocella is a staff writer for The New Yorker. She is the author of Mark Morris; Creating Hysteria: Women and Multiple Personality Disorder; Willa Cather and the Politics of Criticism; and Twenty-eight Artists and Two Saints. She also edited the unexpurgated Diary of Vaslav Nijinsky.

One of the greatest books of all time about the art of Dance!

Agnes de Mille writes extremely honestly about herself in this memoir, often self-deprecatingly. Her tremendous skill as a writer is evident from the start. She comes from a family of intellectuals: Father was William C. de Mille (playwright, writer and director) and uncle Cecil B. de Mille (renowned producer-director). Her father and uncle built the name that is synonymous with movie making and production... Hollywood. The filming lots in those days were little more than scrub land with snakes wondering around the grass. She says of her father that: He was a display of intellectual pyrotechnics when speaking. And of her uncle: He was a delightful conversationalist and an exuberant raconteur, leaning on exaggeration. Not forgetting her mother, Mrs. de Mille, who also possessed a great intellect and was a tremendous influence on her.And that is where Agnes grew up. Amongst some of the most famous stars of the silent movie era and the talkies, surrounded by creativity and intellect. After meeting Anna Pavlova, in person (the famous ballerina of the period), Agnes decided that becoming a ballet dancer was her true calling. However, her lack of physical attributes needed for the art form impeded her progress. After much hard work, struggle and other avenues, she eventually turned to choreography. This is the best thing that could have happened. Most people may not know the name Agnes de Mille, but they would have seen her choreography without realising. Productions such as: Rodeo, Oklahoma, Carousel, Brigadoon and many more. Her style was unique, a blend of American, Modern and sprinkles of Classical.I was myself a principal ballet dancer in the UK and danced with The Royal Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet. During my career, I had the good fortune to perform in one of her creations. It was the ballet Fall River Legend about the life of Lizzie Borden (an American) who was tried and acquitted for the 1892 axe murder of her father and stepmother. This ballet had the most amazing sinister atmosphere created with hardly any choreography or movement. In Agnes' version, Lizzie is found guilty and hanged. The reason I was given (by the person setting the production) was that the composer could only compose hanging music. I actually believe Lizzie was guilty of the crime.Agnes has very strong views about dance throughout, which she voices most eloquently. Some of her views I don't share, but at least she stands by them and doesn't take a vague, politically correct and diplomatic position. However, she is from a different era and this has to be remembered when reading this wonderful book. The book is entertaining, humorous and replete with anecdotes and wonderful prose. Given that she was a physical person throughout her life, and she expressed herself through movement and choreography, her skill as a writer is second to none. This is a book worth reading.I loved it.Sergiu Pobereznic (author)

Agnes De Mille may be known best for her choreography of 'Oklahoma!' She transformed dance on Broadway, and works like 'Rodeo' and 'Fall River Legend' are still performed. 'Dance to the 'Piper' is her autobiography, written in 1951, just a few years after 'Oklahoma!' hit the stage. The book tells how she became captivated by dance after seeing Pavlova. Her career followed, despite the disapproval of her parents. Success did not come quickly and she lived mostly hand to mouth, depending on the kindness and generosity of family and friends, in London, New York, and elsewhere through the 1930s and beyond. Indeed, as World War II broke out, she had decided to give up dancing. But her failures gave her experience and the friendship of many of the young guiding lights of dance, people, like Martha Graham, who were revolutionizing what dance could be.She writes well and honestly. The book emerged from snippets written at odd hours in odd places. But, pieced together, De Mille shows the talent of a novelist. The chapter on 'Rodeo' is an picture of a first night performance--a triumph--that many performers will recognize. It will leave some readers ecstatic. My knowledge of modern dance and ballet is sadly lacking. Until I read 'Dance to the Piper,' I was no fan of De Mille. I am now.

Opened it right away, read it front to back. Very cute, all your favorite lines from Pooh, friends, and Christopher Robin. It represents Christopher Robin all grown up in the art. The art wasn’t my favorite, not classic Pooh. The book now sits on my shelf with my other Disney odds and ends.

Not as cute as I expected. Only a few things from the new Christopher Robin movie. I ordered as a gift and decided it wasn't something worth giving.

Great way to look at mindfulness. Also insight that I never saw her in Winnie the Pooh in my lifetime. And I’m 50+

This book is filled with positive, uplifting quotes. I pick it up when I need to feel better. It never fails to improve my spirits.

I love anything Winnie the Pooh! Very cute & great illustration!

This little book is too cute. I love the quotes and illustrations. Perfect gift for a Pooh fan.

I enjoyed everything about this book. The pictures and the sayings

A good read for a chuckle, 5 smilies 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
