Perhaps one of the most blatantly biased textbooks I have ever been required to read is Health Economics and Policy by Mr. James W. Henderson. Without question the text is well-written and organized, and you will certainly learn your economics principles. However, the author's conservative-based opinion shines through bright and clear. I do not think an author's opinion belongs in this type of textbook. Likewise, if you actually check the author's references for various claims he makes, most are outdated from the early '90s at best or from opinion pieces rather than peer-reviewed research articles. At least once he uses a private conversation as a legitimate reference for a factual claim. Similarly, there is an entire blurb dedicated to the disappearing species of male gynecologists from healthcare. He claims that female gynecologists start out making more than men in the profession, and that both men and women enjoy equal pay parity mid career. I extensively researched this out of curiosity and found him to be blatantly wrong on all claims. I could write an entire book myself criticizing this text. Instead I will be bringing up the issue to the head of my university's economics department about the use of this biased textbook.

Dr. Henderson has written a book is very helpful to anyone interested in all factors that surround health policy. One does not have to have a background in economics to benefit from this book. It is an excellent reference to anyone who is pursuing a health-related degree, or simply interested in our current health care system, factors that have influenced the development of our current health care system, and comparisons to the health care systems of other countries, and more. I took the class on this subject from the author several years ago. He is extremely brilliant and knowledgable in his field, and very interesting. I am equally glad that I did not sell back the book. I have used it for a reference many times as I have continued on in my education.

Chapter on Colombia reads like a poorly written grade school "what I did for my summer vacation" essay, improves slightly with the chapter on the Congo, but my interest flagged with Israel and Palestine. Finished the book because I paid for it and I'm an optimist! Chapters are disorganized, he skips from subject to subject losing his train of thought, and never seems to settle on an over-arching theme. He appears obsessed with Bush; his views on US foreign policy are simplistic, passÃ©, and cliched, I have heard it all a hundred times, it's not new or insightful, it has been said in a million different ways-the western powers are responsible for all the ills and evils in the whole world, bla, bla, bla...borrow the book or get at the library, the book didn't tell me anything I don't already know!

Fascinating journeys by a fascinating man, one with seemingly no prejudice or constricting preconceptions and an admirable facility and patience for navigating red tape and border crossings. Oh, and a remarkably thick skin when being stoned. With real stones.

I first heard about this treatment listening to an International Bipolar Foundation webinar. My daughter is diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. She has been under the nutrient therapy treatment for six months. After seven years taking antipsychotic medications, and lately having constant psychosis for 18 months while on different antipsychotics, my daughter stopped having psychosis after two months of "nutrient therapy" treatment.This book is a condensed description of Dr. William Walshâ€™s 30 years research in the field of nutrient therapy to treat mental disorders. The science-based medical approach developed by this scientist is called "biomedical therapy" or "nutrient therapy." Dr. Walsh created non-profits in order to be able to conduct research about the role of vitamins, mineral, and amino acids in mental disorders. He has presented his research to the American Psychiatric Association. The treatment can be done parallel to the regular psychiatric treatment, if the patient is taking neuroleptics or any psychiatric medication. Dr. Walsh recognizes the importance of methylation processes and epigenetics in brain disorders.The nutrient therapy treatment aims at regulating the synthesis of neurotransmitters using natural chemistry, without producing the negative side effects that the psychiatric drugs generate. The book is written in a simple language, so that, a layperson like me, can understand some basic chemical processes that occur in the human body/brain. The author explains the neurotransmitterâ€™s life cycle and synthesis such as norepinephrine, serotonin, dopamine, and gaba.There are chapters on epigenetics, schizophrenia, depression, autism, behavior disorders, Alzheinerâ€™s, and about the clinical process used in the treatment. What I think is great is that they use blood, urine, and sometimes hair tests to diagnose the chemical imbalance of each patient. The treatment is designed specifically for each person, according with the patientâ€™s biochemistry results. The author states that deviant epigenetic marks that cause brain chemistry imbalances are likely to be reversible.Examining the biochemistry of 30,000 patients diagnosed with mental disorders, the researcher discovered the incidence of methylation disorders. He correlated the DSM diagnosis with the level of methylation he found in the mental disorder patients he studied. Some biotypes tend to be more overmethylated, while others tend to be more undermethylated. Dr. Walsh has great insights into the treatment of behavior disorders. This book is great, and it will revolutionize the psychiatric treatment. Mental health professionals need to realize that there are effective treatments that do not have the terrible side effects that psychiatric drugs do. Dr. William Walsh is a wonderful man, who has been dedicating his career to the development of a protocol for patients with behavior disorders. One great difference between nutrient therapy and the regular laboratory created drug treatment is that the nutrient treatment uses natural body chemicals to restore the person to a normal state.I have been watching videos of Dr. Walshâ€™s presentations and interviews about his theory and treatment. I also read some of the articles on the non-profit he created, Walsh Research Institute. If it were possible I would give more than five stars to this book and to this great scientist.

My daughter was so sick for over two years being diagnosed with everything from depression, to bi-polar to schizophrenia, and ready to be put into a long term mental health facility. None of the hospitals and doctors where I lived could help her with the different drugs they experimented with. However, after I purchased this book and simply experimented with vitamins, I saw immediate results especially with Niacin. Then, after flying to one of the hospitals recommended in the back of the book, and having a micro-nutrient blood test run, getting all of her nutrition levels corrected, my daughter is perfectly well and now in nursing school. I wanted so much to like this book, really I did. Not bad, but very repetitive without making it's point clearly. Got more help from a website which said "If you are thinking you are gender dysphoric, you probably are."Main positive: De-constructing the binary. Brilliant, straight forward (giggle) and to the point. Thank you from the bottom of my soul for that, it is the whole reason for the stars this book gets.Main negative: Too much pressure sell once the binary was de-constructed. I got it, now give me some hints on how to use it instead of trying to resell me on the non-existent binary.

It is interesting to examine your gender when one is cis gendered. While I wasn't able to find myself in all of the exercises I don't think the workbook is for me specifically. There is so much privilege attached to being born in the body I felt I always belonged in and she crafts that in her questions. I'm curious about what the gender fluid public think about it. I hope it inspires everybody to find their happy.

This book is well-written, compassionate, and funny! Would recommend to anybody who wonders about gender at all, from trans* folks to people who just feel a little different gender-wise. It's also a lot of fun to work through, with lots of quizzes and activities.

We used this book in my English class. When I first saw the title, I didn't think it was appropriate for the class, but decided that I would enter into this quarter with an open mind. Needless to say, this book was very educational for me. Not about myself, but about learning about the different gender types.

Kate's book has been a powerful tool in my own understanding of gender. I identify as a cis male, but have a large group of trans and queer friends. It became important to me to develop a deeper understanding of the influence of gender in the lives of those I loved. This book is a great eye-opener.

On page 40 you will learn about keyboard shortcuts in RStudio. On page 50 there are a few pages about vectorization. On p. 154 a byte is defined. Too much of the book is at this level. There are bits and pieces that I find useful (I didn't know about the feather file format, for example), but on the whole this is much more basic than the title would indicate.

The content is reasonable, but the book is very short and wow is the editing poorly done! Typos and other errors on every couple of pages, and the layout of figure legends seems to to have been considered at all. The amateurish production undermines the authority of the bookâ€™s tone, and it comes across in the end as a self-published pamphlet that someone decided to quickly turn into a book. Iâ€™m very disappointed with Oâ€™Reillyâ€™s lack of attention to the bookâ€™s production. The material, the author and the purchaser deserve better.

This book can serve as a useful reminder of some speed tips and tricks for an initiated R user. However, the coverage of any particular topic is too superficial to actually teach the uninitiated.The first edition also reads like a hastily prepared draft. Numerous errors, incomplete descriptions, and redundant prose abound. If you can get past them, you will find excellent recommendations of sources that can be used to teach yourself a new topic or two. This book is freely available online at the first author's webpage, so skim this manuscript there and save your dollars for more effective material.

Writing beautiful concise code is definitely an art, and one that can be difficult to master as so many of us end up pulling together code to perform analytics in a very quick and dirty manner. This reviewer has been guilty of not commenting code and writing redundant routines because it was easier than figuring out the error in a macro or loop. In this book, Gillespie covers the concept of efficiency both through the amount of computational time and the programming time. For large datasets with a "standard" compute, in particular, R can be a little feisty, so computational tips are always useful.From that perspective, this book assumes at least a basic familiarity with R, although it touches on many of the intro concepts. It's not a good place to start if the reader is wanting to *learn* R. The concepts in it are also applicable to other languages, so it doesn't have to be R specific, but the code snippets are all designed to be executed in R. It links to other resources to learn R (including a personal favorite, the R Inferno), which is a nice touch. There is some discussion on the differences in R set up between OS (Windows, Linux, MacOS, Ubuntu).The tips are sometimes interesting - e.g. vectorize data whenever possible. Eh, there are some data types where that's not possible and perhaps not indicated for the types of analysis that need to be performed. Are there other approaches that could work? Those are not to be found in this book.Overall, moderate beginners and some intermediate R programmers will find this useful. Self-taught R programmers will also find some nuggets. Worth a read.

Having written my own book on code optimization, I have a little bit of bias on the right way to do things. I wasn't even a little bit disappointed by Colin Gillespie's book on R. Instead of diving in to code smells and best practices in coding, we roll back to the beginning. How did you set up your R service? How is the system configured? Getting the basics right before tackling coding is absolutely the correct way to get things done. Further, while there is a lot of time spent on coding correctly, memory management and all the rest, the focus, again and again, is on all the methods, not just coding, but data movement, chunking up the work, talking to the business. These are every bit as important to efficient coding as using the correct functions. He even goes a step further and gets into collaboration through code formatting and source control as an aspect of efficient coding.The book is extremely concise. We get an example or two and a short explanation of why we're doing things and then it's on the next topic. If you're just learning R, you'll need another resource or two. Though it may be a little short sometimes, it covers a lot of material in only 200 pages. I found myself going back to sections of the book several times to better understand the points being made and because there were so many points in a short space.Overall, I liked the book and the writing style. I learned a ton about better ways to write R code. I'm going to use the information in this book. That's the highest praise I can give it.

When looking at this, I expected it to include more for folks beyond the basics, which this seemed to cater to. For example, as another reviewer noted, a "byte" is defined on pg. 154, which is pretty simplistic. There are other examples of that, too, and they happen with a bit too much frequency. Also, this relates to large data sets, so a lot of folks will simply take a few extra minutes and approach these subjects differently.That said, I gave it a 3.5 star score because this did have a few portions that were helpful and that I learned from. After running across one of these, I actually stopped and looked the book over again, and I found it a bit better were I looking at it as a beginner or as someone with a specific need set. There was also discussion on items that helped because of their approach, but this is pretty much specific to how you use R and what you want/need to learn.

As noted in other reviews, this book is a collection of essays that Dalrymple wrote during his years as a prison psychologist. The basic theme is that the progressive liberal views on crime, criminals, prison, etc., that we might think are confined to academic and intellectual circles have permeated the entire society and criminals are adversely affected by these ideas. Progressives talk about criminals being victims of society, and prisoners come to Dalrymple claiming to be exactly that. Liberal sociologists speak of prisons as if their sole purpose is to provide therapy and rehabilitation, with isolation from society, deterrence, etc., being ignored, and Dalrymple hears "Prison's no good to me, Doctor; prison's not what I need." (page 216) Sociologists of crime hold academic conferences about how criminal behavior is an addiction, a compulsion that cannot be resisted, and prisoners ask for therapy for their addiction. The cultural elite preach nihilism and despair, the system is rigged against you, it's all about who you know and not merit, etc., and then we are surprised at the pathetic sight of the elderly wasting their monthly pension income on slot machines and lottery tickets.The subtitle of the book is "The Worldview That Makes the Underclass." The worldview we glimpse in these pages does not originate with the underclass, but it seeps into their minds from the cultural air they breathe, exhaled by the liberal elite who seem not to understand that ideas do indeed have consequences. I know of no other book that makes that insightful connection is such a powerful way. Hence, the recommendation on the cover from Thomas Sowell, "A classic for our times. It is as fundamental for understanding the world we live in as the three R's." (Sowell often cites stories from Dalrymple in his columns, concluding the citation with the point that the American reader probably thinks the story comes from a black urban environment, but the story actually comes from lower-class British white people. It is the worldview, not the skin color, that is decisive.)

Great book and fast read. While it probably could be reduced by 25%, it doesn't seem repetitive really. The author strikes me as someone who isn't going after a segment with a popular view of society, but rather as someone who slowly changed his own views from his career. I think this is mostly accomplished because the author doesn't come across as mean or vindictive.The best line of the book is when he counters the people who say they are "easily led". He points out that he's never heard of someone who was easily led to a better life. They're always "easily led" to drugs or ignorance.Even if you enjoy it, the book is somewhat depressing and you'll ask yourself what the point his story is. But I think this is actually his goal - to show a realistic, unapologetic depressing look on some of the poor.

An excellent and eye opening look into the personal mentalities, choices and patterns of behavior that serve to perpetuate the misery of the underclass.Unfortunately, the kinds of people who would be best served by reading this book (awareness and acknowledgement of a habitual/behavioral problem is, after all, the first step), will never read it.The other group that would be well served to read this are the bleeding hearts who support overly liberal policies. This book provides some disturbingly thought provoking insights into the UK's uber 'Politically Correct' policies and the effects they've had on mentalities and education over there.Many of the articles written by the author and compiled in this book were written in the 90's and early 2000's and yet, some folks are still pushing the US in that direction, despite contraindications from other countries who've already been there. A reader might be inclined to ask, "Why is that?"

This book should be required reading for Priests, charity workers, inner city teachers, and those who wish to work to alleviate corporeal suffering of all kinds. Too often people start these labors expecting gratitude from the recipients of charity only to find the opposite. Those who wish to love and serve the poor should be emotionally prepared for the challenges that face them and not come into the labor with Hallmark card sentimentality which this book will rid from them. Life at the bottom is a page turning collection of essays that illustrate the bad fruit begotten by socialism, sentimentality, relativism and other modern manifestations of error. If a person wants to know what happens to societies that forget how to say mea culpa, amend their lives and do penance for their past sins look here. Our modern ideas rooted in a rejection of truth and justice lead to great misery, and unhappy people no matter how much government welfare is thrown at them.I will be keeping my copy to gird myself both to reread, lend out and use as a reference in the future.
