Low Calorie Cajun Cooking started in Enola Prudhomme's restaurant. She had been making lower-calorie recipies there for family, but the menu contained none of them. When some patrons inquired, she tried putting one or two of them on the menu and met with great success. Today, half of the menu features these "heart smart" recipies. The crawfish etouffee is marvelous!

Great recipes - love it

Excellent cookbook in many ways. The recipes appear to be well tested and all very flavorful without the calories and fat often associated with Cajun food. It's one of the 3-4 cookbooks that I return to frequently. I only wish it came as an e-book also.

Love this book, and I come from Cajun country. Most Cajun recipes start with "take a stick of butter." Ms. Prudhomme's recipes have all the flavor and moisture at a fraction of the calories.

I am from Louisiana and with Enola Prudhomme's cookbook, I can enjoy the food I am use to eating without loading up on the calories.

Great cook book.

Bought this book as a holiday gift for my daughter (from her Amazon.com wishlist). The book looks to be in excellent condition except for one thing . . . it has a "From The Kitchen Of" sticker with someone's name written in ink inside the front cover.I think I'll be able to cover that name, or maybe put another sticker over it, but that's the only reason I rated less than five stars.Otherwise, the book appears to be in great condition.

This is the chilling tale of the cycle of suffering and struggle that took place in Nicaragua over a span of a century - and the survival of its people throughout it all. Told passionately by a man who lived through some of the revolution and much of the contra war while on assignment for the New York Times, this book will grab your attention and hold it closely until the end. Kinzer is an amazing writer, and he brings the culture and the people of Nicaragua to life unlike any other author that I've read on the subject of this beautiful country, a country with so much potential and seemingly so much bad luck.I love Nicaragua and have visited many times. The beauty of the landscape, the relaxed and laid back lifestyle, and the kindness of the people is amazing. As a very patriotic American, though, I've always struggled to understand the politics, the state of their economy, and their beliefs, as it is so different from any I've ever known. This book, finally, pulls it all into perspective - I ordered it at the end of my last trip and I'm so glad that I did. It takes the bits and pieces of information I've collected along the way and binds them together with details the author gained through research, interviews, and personal experience. It is the most comprehensive telling of the Nicaraguan history that I've found, a history which is so permeated by politics that to attempt to learn about it without the story of their politicians and their wars is simply to miss the entire point of it.My husband, who is Nicaraguan, and I have discussed the chapters as I've read them, finding answers to so many questions that we both had, big and small alike, (such as the advent of the plastic bags! as well as the reasons behind the war) and discovering new questions that we'll pursue independently. This book is an absolute gem to anyone who wants to learn more about Nicaragua. I could only wish for something as good to cover the last 20 years, as this book ends its coverage in the mid-90's. The version I purchased does come with a nice afterward that briefly sums up the 10 years after that point. I commend Kinzer for a generally neutral tone as he shares his love of Nicaragua, and his understanding of it, with us.

This book blew me away. I'm going on a mission trip to Nicaragua soon, so wanted to learn some of their history. This book is an incredible first-hand account of what it was like to live in Nicaragua during the tumultuous political upheavals of the 1980's. Although the book contains very detailed information about how events unfolded, the book is never boring. The author makes you feel as if you know the characters personally, largely because the author does get to know them personally. It's a very interesting account of why the communist government failed, of the exceedingly harmful effects that U.S. foreign policy had on Nicaragua, and of how, egged on by foreign powers, Nicaraguans tore their country apart fighting each other for power, leading them to now carry the unfortunate distinction of 2nd poorest country in the western hemisphere after Haiti. This is not a book written by someone from afar, but from someone who lived among the people, spoke their language, and cared deeply about them. I feel that, having read this book, my trip will be much more meaningful. Highly recommended.

I lived again the 80's in Nicaragua through Kinzer`s writing. Some sort of catharsis I`d say. It was intense, sad and funny, to read and "see from above" what we nicaraguans lived in that last cold-war decade. I consider Kinzer`s account of the story to be objective and very proffessional. Yes, you get to feel that he was not just a witness but somebody that lived the story not only as as a reporter but as a human being. For instance, mentioning his use of a rocking chair at his house might seem a simple detail to many, but indeed embraces something with more significance, as balancing in such chair is kind of a ritual for nicaraguans, to enjoy and to meditate at the end of the day. I can't deny I wish he had written more of his experiences, which I bet he had many, but that would have given at least another volume already considering this one is not a small book. Finally, his afterwords, although sad, remained loyal to reality: the Nicaraguan Revolution had a meaning and changed things in historical terms, but looking at today's reality, no doubt that Nicaragua deserved a better outcome.

Written in first person and you feel you are there in his shoes. Very well balanced as far as being objective. I've been to Nicaragua 3 times, studied it somewhat in college and one of the 3 times was a study abroad. I already knew much about things there but learned much more and as mentioned before, felt li,e I was experiencing things with the author. I have heard both sides from the people that I've met there. It's really a beautiful country and the people are very humble and down to earth. Someday, hopefully soon, it will reach its potential. Europeans are travelling there as well as some ex pats and college students. Too bad our policy has done such harm over the years...it does jump around a bit but well worth reading if you have any interest in Nicaraguan history from a neutral point of view.

Excellent, detailed review of events in Nicaragua at the time of the 1979 Revolution and the terrible decade of Contra wars that followed. Powerful indictment of US involvement, lies, and manipulation. An even-handed assessment of the Sandinista government: its limitations and internal struggles and blind spots, and the way that the deck was stacked against it horribly by right-wing neighbors (Argentina) and US "Cold Warriors".Book concludes with the end of the Contra wars. I wish for a sequel that would cover the 1990s and the return of Ortega in 2001 and what's happened since then!

I recently completed my PhD in the social sciences and wish that I had been able to read this book at the beginning of my graduate career. It's far more than a mere how-to on note-taking. It's effectively an evidence-based reflection on thinking and learning as a materially based practice that would be useful for everyone who is engaged in making knowledge in some way.The author draws on a variety of research dealing with attention, learning, cognition, etc. to make an argument for the "slip box" note-taking system (or "Zettelkasten" as made famous by prolific sociologist Niklas Luhmann). I tend to think of these types of books as "self-help" for academics, but in the best way. Reading this book opened my eyes to the habits and practices that will best help me reflect and digest the reading I do, and productively summarize and apply it to my research and writing. This process has already helped me to read more effectively, by focusing on what in the given text is relevant to what I already know or am puzzling about. I'm deeply convinced by this iterative and generative process of knowledge-production.If you're an academic or other knowledge worker who struggles with how to usefully organize and engage with the massive amounts of information that we all accumulate, this is the book for you. If you feel that the notes you take on things often get lost (in your organizing system) or become incomprehensible after time has passed, this book is for you. If you are interested in methods and practices for streamlining and optimizing your knowledge work (GTD-followers, I'm looking at you), buy this book! ;)

I've always wanted to write a book. I can never remember what books I've read. This book solved the problem! It lays out a simple process for how to pull information from one book and apply it to the thoughts/ ideas of another. I read and underline and write notes in the margin, but then I never come back to them. In fact, it turns out that the only way I can tell if I've read a book is to look inside and see if I made notes in it. Then I know that I've read it and put it down. This book lays out a simple process of how to take notes. I find now that when I'm reading, I'm going through a mental inventory of thoughts/ ideas from other books and my own that cause me to pause and reflect and interact with books in a way I never had before reading this one. Understanding how to take notes and getting into the habit of doing it has unleashed this new superpower within me that sees and believes that I can write a book.

This is a book about MUCH more than a way to take smart notes. Oh, sure, you’ll learn all about a super cool (and super simple) system for taking notes. But that is covered in the first 20% of the book. The rest of the book is about deep and critical topics related to smart note taking, like thinking well, reading well, the writing process and even how to set up habits of success. I almost didn’t read it because it looked too basic. I’m so glad I did.

I express a very big gratitude to the author. This book is a "must-read" manual for all researchers. This book is quite different from other "help-self" manuals. It was written by a scientist, and is based on a huge number other science books, and resources. Reference bibliography is amazing. Your productivity will gain tremendously in your daily-workflow. The book exposed me to a German organization approach called slipbox that helps to capture your notes. The process combined with review can make progress in writing books or papers more pleasurable. I did not buy into the software that was suggested, but found google Keep could as easily be used.

This book does not explain how to use Luhmann’s method precisely. It is just a compilation of over-explained ideas (nothing new under the sun, by the way) that are not even useful for applying that method. There are other resources in the web, so please, avoid buying this book.

For years I was stuck with a dogma that to write about something you have to start with a topic and then mechanically search through all sources and read excerpts that related to this topic. Then somehow synthesize all pieces into something new. Of course, this approach never worked. But for some reason I kept doing it and had to fight with myself for most of my life.This book is like coming out. It's like when you are gay, finally accepting that you are gay and start loving yourself. Or like when you don't want kids for any reason, for example when having them would mean financial burden and slavery in the corporate america for the rest of your life, and somebody tells you that it's OK not to have kids at all unless you feel like it.This book tells you that it's OK to live life as you want it and tells it in a way, that is accepted immediately as common sense, but until I read it - I was so lost in the dark.P.S. Most of the bad reviews concerned with the fact that the book "promotes" some pieces of software. Yes, it indirectly does. But it's strictly complementary to the topic, rather to help reader with tools. All of the software is FREE and open source.

This book helps me to understand why we learn things in the way we do. The many examples of human behaviour in scientific studies are fun to read.The only area I wish the author would expand on is the usage scenarios of the software tools in support of the Zettelkasten method.
